October 23, 2015

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Next week we have two days with students and then Wednesday through Friday are parent/teacher conferences. I hope you signed up for a conference with your child’s homeroom teacher as well as any specialist (PE, Art, Science, Music, etc.) that you may want to speak to. Click Here to sign up or to make a change. It will be active until Monday, Oct. 26th. If you have a last minute conflict, please call the office and we will notify the teacher in order to reschedule.

This Sunday is Priesthood Sunday. It is a day set aside to celebrate the wonderful men who have dedicated their lives in service to our Church. If you see Fr. Mike this weekend, be sure to thank him and point out anything he could do better. (Just checking to see if you are really reading this!) We are so lucky to have him as our pastor—sort of like our own rock star! Let’s be sure to tell him how much we appreciate his vision, commitment, and hard work for the Madeleine Community.

One last thing….since we have three conference days next week, we will not be publishing the Footnotes on Oct. 30th.  However, there may be some Auction reminders, etc. going out via email. Stay tuned.

Since my beloved Colorado Buffaloes are playing the Beavers this weekend, I will close with “Go Buffs!”

                                                 Sincerely,

                                                 Susan

P.S. Here are a couple of notices regarding the playground and use of The Field of Dreams:

Please, no cleated shoes on the school playground
This should seem quite obvious, but please do not allow your children to play on the playground equipment in front of the school while wearing cleated shoes (soccer shoes, baseball shoes, football shoes, etc).

School Field to be locked at night
Effective immediately, in an effort to be good neighbors and to promote safety on campus, The Madeleine School Field will be locked and inaccessible during nighttime hours. Each evening, a uniformed security officer will clear the field at dusk and lock both gates. The field will be unlocked for use in the morning by assigned parish staff  or parishioners.

Counselor Corner:

We have known for some time how to provide intervention and tutoring to help students with academic deficits or learning differences.  However, the question remains, how do we help students with cognitive challenges?  These challenges can range from memory deficits (short-term, long-term, working memory, etc.), compromised focus and attention, underdeveloped executive functioning skills and slow processing.   Many of the training programs I have researched for schools are cumbersome and costly.  However, many apps are being developed that may be able to help students improve their cognitive functioning and can work for at home use. Below is a list of some of the more well-known products:

Mind Node

CogniFit

Luminosity

iThoughts

Fit Brains Trainer

Brain Yoga

Eidetic

Attention Exercise

Elevate

Brain Training:  Focus

This is by no means an endorsement of any of the above products.  Do your own research and let me know if you have success with any of these apps.  Carolyn

St. Stephen’s Lunch Program

Making a difference one lunch at a time

Thank you to the 3rd Grade for contributing 218 lunches! Many were decorated with stamps and stickers indicating that Halloween will soon be here. Your thoughtful touches were noticed and appreciated.

In the last few weeks I have been asked, “why no condiments?” Volunteers from St. Stephen’s asked specifically for this change because eggs are on the “Big 8” of food allergens. Many lunches were not being accepted because of mayonnaise on the bread. Madeleine School has purchased boxes of individual packets of both mayonnaise and mustard to hand out separately.  If you have extra individual packets of either mustard or mayonnaise at home that you would like to donate please do. Just place in a separate plastic bag and we will bring it to the parish.

Thank You Madeleine Families!

familyFamily Faith Sharing

October 25 ~ 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 10:46-52

Jesus was traveling with his disciples and many people. A blind man named Bartimaeus was

sitting and begging on the side of the road and when he heard that Jesus was in the crowd he began to call to him, saying, “Have pity on me.” Although some people told him to be quiet, Bartimaeus kept crying out, and so Jesus stopped and called for him. When Jesus asked what he wanted, Bartimaeus simply said, “Master, I want to see.” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.” And Bartimaeus could see immediately.

Have you ever thought about how many blind or sick or injured people were around in Jesus’ day? And that he didn’t run around trying to heal them all. Instead, he healed those who called out to him for help. What does this mean for us today? What do you think Bartimaeus already knew about Jesus before he talked to him? What does Jesus mean when he says ‘your faith has saved you?'

Remembering our beloved dead

All Souls Day Service of Light, November 2 • Photos • Envelopes

The month of November is traditionally the time in the Catholic Church when we remember those who have passed, both in the previous year and before. This year, we have several ways to remember those who have come before us.

Lux Aeterna, All Souls Day
Service of Light, November 2

All are invited to attend a special Service of Light at 7 pm on All Souls Day, Monday, November 2, in the church.

This brief service will include the Madeleine Choir and soloists, and will incorporate music from Requiems by Gabriel Faure, John Rutter and others; scripture readings, and a reflection. The service will conclude with each participant lighting votive candles as a sign of remembrance for those that have died.

Everyone is asked to bring a picture of their deceased loved one anytime after November 1. All pictures will be displayed in the church throughout the month of November. Please be sure to mark the back of your picture with your name so that it can be returned to you.

Photos or Memorial Cards

Also, in November, please bring photos or memorial cards of your deceased family members and friends to place on the Altar of the Dead during the month of November. Please make sure all photos are clearly marked on the back with name and phone number so they can be returned during Advent.

Remembrance Envelopes

In the pews, you’ll find envelopes for remembering people dear to you who have passed away. Please print legibly the names of the deceased whom you would like to be remembered during November.

PDXCatholicTots Events

PDXCatholicTots is a group dedicated to families with children younger than school age. For information, contact Ann Hart, ahart@themadeleine.edu. Facebook group: PDXCatholicTots.

Saturday, October 31 9 am-12 noon

Please join PDXCatholicTots at the Oregon Zoo on Halloween for Hawloween. Dress your tot in his/her costume and enjoy the special tot events planned for the day. Please meet at 9 am inside the zoo entrance. We hope to see you there!
