February 26, 2016

A Note from Susan

Susan is away at a meeting of Catholic School principals, so we are filling in as her guest columnists.

If Susan was here she would draw your attention to an envelope coming home today in your child’s Friday Folder (or stuffed at the bottom of your middle schooler’s backpack). A quick glance at the letter will lead you to believe it is simply an appeal for the 2016 Annual Fund Campaign. A moment of reflection, however, might lead you to realize it is an opportunity to help families you see every day at Madeleine.

Whether you choose to support the Area of Greatest Need, Tuition Assistance or the Endowment, your donation will help the families around you who struggle to pay tuition. So far this school year 42 students have received $55,365 in financial aid. These families' struggles might be because they are also caring for an elderly parent or because they have multiple kids in Catholic School and a job that pays less than it did before the recession. Regardless of the reasons, they need help only you can provide.

Give what you can and know you have answered another call to help those in need during this Lenten Season and this Year of Mercy. As in the past, if we raise $25,000, the Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation will match it with another $25,000. So without further ado, grab your letter and make a difference in the lives of those around you every day!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Lynn Robinson and Caryn Fiedler

(on behalf of Susan)

scienceScience Night Success

Wow, what a night! Hopefully, you were able to attend Science Night last night and play with the incredible interactive projects our middle school students proudly presented. The night included robots, magnets, dry ice, Rube Goldberg machines, fire, geckos and so much more! Many, many parents said that this was the best Science Night ever thanks to all the new interactive displays for the students (and more than a few parents!) to learn from and enjoy. Thank you to Ms. Yuhas for her leadership and guidance in creating such a fun and educational event.

Click here to see some photos from Science Night.

Click here to read an article from Wired Magazine about making Science Fairs cool again. Oh wait, Ms. Yuhas has already done that! Thanks to Alison Anderson for sending the link.

Madeleine Got Talent!!!

It’s that time of year again! Talent show! Auditions are on March 10 after school around 3:25pm in the Parish Hall. A rehearsal will follow on March 17 in the Parish Hall. The following day, which is the day before Spring Break, will be the talent show.

The rules are the same as always: no lip syncing and your performance can’t be longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The performer has to provide their own CD or iPod. We have the CD player. Music must be Catholic school friendly and a copy of the lyrics must be provided at the audition.

It’s time to organize your act to participate in this year’s annual talent show!

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

The 7th Grade did a tremendous job and made 194 lunches! They did something a bit different this week. Instead of making the lunches at home, they were asked to bring ingredients to class and assemble the lunches together. What a great way to reinforce community and service. Our friends at St. Stephens truly are thankful for your efforts. Thank You 7th Grade!

February 28 ~ Second Sunday of Lent ~ Luke 9:28b-36

Jesus took Peter, James and John and went up on the mountain to pray. While he was praying, his face changed and his clothes became dazzling white. From a cloud came a voice saying, “this is my Son, my Chosen, listen to him.” How do you listen to God? Tell about your favorite way and place to listen to God.

More than 90 parishioners are already receiving daily reflections during Lent, written by Deacon Mike and his handpicked volunteer group.

Three ways to receive Lenten Daily Reflections:

Rev. Bob Hasenkamp of Unbound to celebrate Masses of March 5-6

unbound logoFather Mike has extended an invitation to Rev. Bob Hasenkamp to come to our parish on the weekend of March 5-6, 2016. Father Hasenkamp will speak about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor.

Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 20 developing countries since 1981 - empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential.
