A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Madeleine Safety and Security Committee is taking over my space this week to bring up some issues we are having on our campus. Please read this letter in light of the safety of all who are part of the Madeleine community. Susan
Student and Pedestrian Safety on 24th Avenue
As a parent of a child at The Madeleine, have you ever stood and observed traffic and driver behavior on 24th Avenue or in The Madeleine parking lots?
The Safety & Security committee recently discussed this important topic, and several of us have done exactly that. We had our own personal observations to share, and we would like to share them with you. Included were observations of:
- Excessive speed (more than the posted 20 mph for a school zone)
- Failure of vehicles to stop at the crosswalk for pedestrians (it is a legal requirement to stop)
- Entering the south parking lot (by the gym) the wrong way (it is one-way and posted with a “Do Not Enter” sign)
- Reckless U-Turns on 24th in front of the gym (turn from southbound to northbound as if frantically looking for somewhere to park)
It’s easy to say this is a public street and we can’t control all the traffic. But do you know the shocking thing the committee noticed? These were all observed to be Madeleine parents or caregivers who eventually parked and approached the school. Most were at drop-off or pick-up time when maybe there was a sense of urgency not to be late. But a minute late is better than someone being injured.
Additionally, it has been observed that children are often dropped off on the east side of 24th and run across the middle of the busy street to get to school, and they are not using the designated crosswalks.
So this is a gentle reminder of the responsibility we have as parents, caregivers and parishioners to obey the traffic laws and rules around our school. Please, please:
- Drive with caution and always be alert
- Be aware of children at all times, as we know they can dart around and change their direction pretty quickly
- Do not exceed 20mph even for a moment
- Stop at the crosswalk for pedestrians
- Watch your turns onto and off of Klickitat Street
- Follow all posted signs and direction arrows at the parking lots
- Make sure children use the designated crosswalks to cross 24th Ave at all times
Whether as parents, caregivers or parishioners, we surely can agree that the safety and security of our children is our shared responsibility.
Thanks,
The Madeleine Safety & Security Committee

Spirit Week
Monday, May 23 - Friday May 27
Spirit week this year is scheduled for the week of May 23rd. It is a fun time to celebrate our school and rediscover what we love about it. Student Government has planned days for us to have fun and dress up. Here are the themes for each day of Spirit Week this year:
- Monday, May 23 - Pajama Day - Wear your PJs to school.
- Tuesday, May 24 - Tourist Tuesday - Dress up like a tourist exploring the world. Wear things like khaki shorts, Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, and funny hats (but don’t wear the hats in the classroom, of course!).
- Wednesday, May 25 - Way Back Wednesday - Dress up from a time period in the past. Medieval, 1980s, or World War II - it’s all up to you!
- Thursday, May 26 - Dress Your Best - In honor of Mass on Thursday, put on your Sunday best. Come to school in a tie, bow tie, collared shirt, dress or skirt.
- Friday, May 27 - Ready to Run - It’s time for the Jogathon! Come to school in running gear such as tennis shoes, athletic shorts, and a t-shirt. Get ready to run and support our school.
Have fun!

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!
If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.
The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

Madeleine Wildlife Habitat and Garden Gains Habitat Heroes
The Madeleine Wildlife Habitat and Garden has been abuzz recently. Ms. Yuhas has regularly been taking seventh graders out to study and learn about plants. Almost every grade visited the Habitat again with Mrs Galash this week. The kids are keeping a watchful eye for signs of visiting Monarch Butterflies, and observing the growth of their host plant, milkweed. Fifth grade discovered a lot of insect life and was even treated to a flyover by a large, blue and black dragonfly!
The Habitat is keeping pollinators busy and many bees were observed on the cistus plants, which is great to see as bees have been struggling in recent years. Students also made predictions about the four natural weed control methods in use in the test site along the sidewalk. Which one will perform best? Ask your younger students about Habitat Heroes.
Habitat Heroes kicked off their first gathering Thursday after school, looking for insects, checking for evidence of Monarch butterflies, and having some fun in the sun. They even found a big, beautiful snail shell! Pictured are Katie Rose, Annalise, Nolie, Lucy, and Gillian.
St. Stephens Lunch Program
Making a difference, one lunch at a time!
Okay, Bulldogs, we need to rally! The last two weeks we have hit a lunch lull. My hope is that we finish strong in the next couple of weeks. Last week the 7th graders brought in 78 lunches and this week the 6th grade brought in 75 lunches. St Stephens and their programs rely on our Tuesday contributions. Let’s finish up strong!

Youth Ministry
June 5th and June 12th @ 7pm
With the Madeleine Spring Musical right around the corner, we have decided to have our last two middle school youth nights of the school year on Sunday, June 5th and Sunday, June 12th from 7-8:15pm. These youth nights promise to be memorable and fun, so bring a friend and your sunny attitude! Speaking of sun, hot weather calls for play time on the field. Don't forget your athletic shoes.
In the meantime, do not miss the Walk For Water event taking place at Laurelhurst Park on Sunday, May 22nd at 1pm to raise awareness for poor communities living without adequate drinking water. Come walk so they don't have to walk! See you there!
Cormac Leads the Second Grade Class to Raise $10,000 to Fight Cancer
Cormac lost his uncle to blood cancer and knew he had to do something. He is now part of an Oregon team raising funds for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society during a 10-week national campaign.
He recruited his classmates and together they sent letters around the world requesting donations. His classmates also sold cookies, lemonade and homemade dog biscuits. Their efforts resulted in donations from all 50 states and all 7 continents for a total of $10,000! Way to go, Cormac, and everyone in second grade!

Family Faith Sharing
May 15 ~ Pentecost ~ John 20:19-23
In this Sundays’ gospel passage, we hear that the disciples are all together in one room, the doors locked, and they are afraid. Jesus comes and stands in the room with them. “Peace be with you.” He breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The disciples are not afraid and go outside with Jesus. Can you call on this gift of the Holy Spirit when you need strength in your life? How? What times in your life could you have asked for strength and didn’t?
Thank you from Portland Aquatic Club
A big Thank You from the athletes and volunteers of Portland Aquatic Club for shopping at the Columbia Sportswear employee store during our recent fundraiser promotion. Your purchases helped us raise nearly $7,500 for the club--funds which will be used for a variety of needs, including financial assistance, equipment, and subsidizing fees to help make competitive swimming affordable for all youth who want to participate. Thank you, and enjoy your Columbia purchases!

Save the date! Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood
Saturday, June 4 • Mass of Thanksgiving 10:00 am Sunday, June 5
Deacon Anthony Ahamefule has been one of the most popular seminarians/deacons
we’ve had the pleasure of hosting at The Madeleine. His hard work, willingness
to learn and to teach, and humble manner have combined to make him truly
“our own.”
Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood will be Saturday, June 4,
11:00 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His Mass of Thanksgiving at The Madeleine
will be at our 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 5, with a reception to follow
in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to both Masses
Help show your appreciation for all he has done for us by attending one
or both Masses.
NOTE: Many people have asked what sort of ordination gift might be helpful. We are aware of several options, one of which is a collection of funds for a vehicle or for vestments and a chalice. If you wish to contribute, the easiest path is to include your gift in a card or envelope and mail or drop off at the Parish Office. Please be sure to note that this gift is for Father Anthony.
Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
Contributing to Friday Footnotes
If you have information to contribute to Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
