A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you have a lovely three day weekend planned. I am sure it will be filled with soccer games, birthday parties, shopping, perhaps a short trip to the beach…… Our teachers will be working tomorrow. We will gather with our Archdiocesan colleagues at Jesuit High School to learn more about two different topics. The morning will be focused on the subject of meeting the needs of diverse learners. There will be a speaker who will provide insight on how to identify and then accommodate the various learning modalities that we see in a typical classroom. The afternoon will be spent in grade level groups exploring the new English Language Arts benchmarks and incorporating them into our curriculum maps. I am sure it will be as exciting as a soccer game, birthday party, or trip to the beach!
Requirements to Volunteer in the School
Volunteer season is in full swing and Angela and I are a bit dismayed that so many parents are not up to speed on the requirements necessary to volunteer in the school. I know we talk about it at every Back to School Night, follow up with a lengthy reminder in the Friday Footnotes, and the instructions are also on our school web site for the yearly online training. Please click here to read how you begin the process necessary to volunteer at The Madeleine or at any Archdiocesan event.
Sincerely,
Susan

Madeleine Peacemakers
An exciting new program, called Madeleine Peacemakers (MP), is beginning on Monday in the Madeleine K- 5 community. Fifth graders will be participating in a peer helper program at recess where they will work in conjunction with our recess staff out on the playground at morning and lunch recess. The objective of the program is to build problem-solving skills with peer support. The hope is that students will become self-managers out on the playground.
To prepare for this duty, the fifth graders participated in two training sessions in which they learned conflict resolution skills they can apply on the playground. They learned to understand conflict, effectively communicate with peers and intentionally listen. The process will help them and their peers to apply those skills in real life situations and settle things in a positive and constructive manner.
Having a peer help program in place will allow students to become actively involved in transforming the school climate and aid in making the playground a more safe and respectful environment. If you have any questions, please contact me at cullman@themadeleine.edu.
Thanks for your support,
Carolyn Ullman

Art After Hours
Middle Schoolers looking for more time to create are invited to come to Art After Hours with Mrs. Galash on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:00. The art room will be yours to explore whether you've dreamed up a new masterpiece, want to add an artistic flourish to a project from another subject, or just love sharpening pencils. It isn't necessary to commit to regular attendance. Drop in. You will need to make sure someone at home knows where you are and clean up before you leave.
And for those Middle Schoolers who expressed an interest in the Art of Chi Kung following my demonstration with the cement block at the Talent Show, come during Art After Hours for an introduction to the practice.

Looking for Kids Kreation Cards This Fall?
Make a note that sales have been moved to the spring. Please plan accordingly for special holiday gifts and cards this year.
A new online ordering system will be available in the spring with cards delivered in classrooms in time for Mother’s Day gifts.
If you are looking for your child's art for a holiday gift this year, check out the new online art gallery set up by Madeleine’s fabulous art teacher, Ida Galash. Simply go to www.artsonia.com and search for “Madeleine.”
Students who were enrolled last year have at least one piece published. Once you find your child’s artwork, you can transform it into treasures. Click on the “Gift Shop” tab to see what dozens of items will look like with their artwork on them. From phone cases to cutting boards, T shirts to journals, there are a lot of choices. As a wonderful bonus, our school receives 20% from everything you order.
Wish more of your child's art was available on Artsonia? We are still building our Artsonia Gallery and are actively seeking volunteers to photograph and upload student work. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new adventure, please email Ida Galash at igalash@themadeleine.edu. Training takes less than five minutes and much of the work could be done from home.
Counselor Corner

The discussion of the harmful effects of screen time on children has increased dramatically over the last few years. There is a distinction to be made, however, between “educational” and “entertainment” oriented screen time. What can parents do to balance the use of technology with their goal of raising responsible, well-adjusted children?
Parent-Teacher Online Conference Sign-ups
You can sign up for your conferences by clicking here. Please contact Alison Anderson at aanderson@themadeleine.edu if you have any questions.

Family Faith Sharing
October 11 ~ 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Mark 10:17-30
A young man comes to Jesus asking what he should do to get to heaven. Jesus reminds him of the commandments, but the man insists that there must be more. So Jesus tells him to sell everything he has, give the money to the poor, and to follow him. Then the young man goes away sad, because he is rich and does not want to give that up. Jesus tells his disciples how hard it is for someone with a lot of material wealth to enter the kingdom of God. He says it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. So the disciples wonder how anyone can get to heaven, but Jesus tells them all things are possible for God. When Peter reminds Jesus that they have given up everything to follow him, Jesus promises them that anyone who does so will be richly rewarded.
In Jesus’ time, wealth was considered a sign of God’s favor. So the disciples are amazed to hear Jesus say it’s hard for a rich person to get into heaven. Jesus says ‘all things are possible for God.’ Can you think of something God did that seemed to be impossible? Sharing our material wealth with the poor is one way to ‘give’ something up to follow Jesus. What else can we ‘give up’ to be good disciples?

Day of Service Appreciation and Gratitude
The FIRST note of appreciation goes to the Pastoral Council and Father Mike for giving the Peace and Justice committee the “green light” to proceed with an idea and plan that would bring members of the parish community together employing the themes of Catholic Social Teaching on one single day. One day that can grow to more days, of course. Thank you!!
On Saturday, October 3, 2015, volunteer captains lead their teams in our community and beyond....
