A Note from Susan
Susan has turned over her column this week for a very important message from the School Advisory Committee.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Each year the School Advisory Council (SAC) recommends a budget to Father Mike and the Parish Council for the upcoming year. Foremost in our considerations is providing an excellent Catholic education to the extended community, not just to those families able to comfortably afford it. Since the cost of educating our kids is greater than tuition cost, we thank your generosity during the various fundraising campaigns, such as rounding-up on your monthly tuition payments. The budgeting process attempts to balance many factors such as: anticipated changes in costs, the revenues needed to balance them, and the goals and constraints contained in our Five-Year Plan.
The Five-Year Plan calls for continued support for our excellent faculty by increasing compensation against a benchmark of public school rates. To that end, SAC has recommended a cost of living adjustment and a move to the 94th percentile of benchmark rates—both changes in line with the Five-Year Plan. In addition, we anticipate higher utility, benefit, and healthcare costs. To offset these cost increases and balance the budget, the School will need additional revenues.
After careful consideration of the items above, SAC recommended a tuition increase that is within the guidelines in the Five-Year Plan, provides the funds necessary to meet important needs, and keeps tuition costs at The Madeleine attractive relative to peer schools in the area.
Click here to view next year's tuition rates. Please feel free to contact SAC at sac@themadeleine.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Andy Boots, School Advisory Chairman
SAC Finance Committee
PS - I hope you are looking forward to a wonderful Spring Break. Whatever your plans, please do your best to rest and relax during the coming week and come back ready to finish the last trimester of school with joy and purpose.
Susan

Kids Kreations 2016
Deadline to order = April 1
The Kids Kreation's Krew (cheesy, we know) has great news about the new time of year for purchasing Kids Kreation's cards: it's super popular! We've had a great response to the spring debut and we're happy to announce sales are downright springy!
There is still lots of time to purchase your child's Kids Kreations cards. You can use Kids Kreations cards in so many ways. They make great gifts for Mother's Day, Father's Day, Christmas and birthdays (especially for grandparents). They are great for thank-you notes, for business promotion, and kids from all over your neighborhood will be delighted to receive them as Halloween treats. Truly, there isn't an occasion in which Kids Kreations cards aren't appropriate. (Well, maybe as condolence cards, but we'll leave that call to you.)
As you'll remember, a set of notecards includes 20 cards (5.5 x 4.25 inch) and envelopes for only $27.50. The inside of the cards are blank, so they are appropriate for any occasion.
Order your child's cards on the Kids Kreations website at www.themadeleine.edu/Kreations. The order deadline is April 1. Cards will go home with your child the first week of May, just in time for every holiday that follows for the whole year to come.
YDP Reminder

Art in the Garden
With the return of warmer days comes the return of visits to our school Wildlife Habitat and Garden. Your students can look forward to sketching, observing, and learning about native plants and the birds and insects that call our garden home. Our garden provides an important stopover for migrating Monarch Butterflies and is officially registered as a Monarch Wayside. Remember: no milkweed, no Monarchs! The garden received some much needed TLC last weekend. Weeds were removed and a new little patch of kinnikinick, a native ground cover with beautiful spring flowers to provide food for early pollinators, was planted. If you are curious about the orange powder sprinkled around the new plants, it is corn gluten meal, an environmentally (and kid) friendly weed seed suppressant.
Stay tuned for more about our first-ever Multi-cultural Arts Festival and our ever-popular Art Show. You can help makes these events a success. Please give a little of your time to show your kids that the arts and creativity are important.

7th Grade Visits Medical Teams International's REAL LIFE Exhibit
On Tuesday, March 15th, seventh grade took a field trip to Medical Teams International (MTI), REAL LIFE exhibit, to help understand the hardships some people face. Our class learned that worldwide, people suffer day and night, trying to escape the grasp of natural disasters, poverty, and disease. MTI works to provide medical relief for these people.
The REAL LIFE exhibit, though emotionally heavy, caused the whole class to look at the world from a new perspective. After the fieldtrip, our class wrote reflections on how we had changed for the better. We realized that our class felt the need to take action and help those who can’t help themselves. At MTI, our class learned about Hope Kits. Hope Kits are sent out by MTI to people in need around the globe.
Our class agreed to each make at least one Hope Kit, and want to invite Madeleine families to participate, too. We hope to make a difference in someone’s life. We can do our part, but to change the world we are going to need everyone’s help. “I’m only one person, but I can make a difference!” (Medical Teams International).
Click here to learn what needs to go into your Hope Kit.
If you wish to participate, please drop off your Hope Kit by April 8th in the collection box near the school entrance.

Our work on poverty continues….
As reported earlier this year, Madeleine has joined in a neighborhood
initiative to increase awareness and to confront the roots of poverty in
our larger community. In conjunction with NE churches and other faith communities
we have formed the Northeast Faith Alliance (NIA) to coordinate efforts
to provide education on becoming a more poverty-informed community, advocate
for those in poverty who need our help and to provide direct support to
help those experiencing poverty, especially intergenerational poverty,
in finding ways to transition to greater stability. Since the initial poverty
forum last October the Northeast Faith Alliance has been meeting regularly
in a larger planning group and in subcommittees to work on issues. We have
identified potential partners in advocacy and have explored various models
of direct support. In the next few weeks recommendations will be made from
the subcommittees to the larger planning group. In May the planning committee
will share its conclusions with our faith partners and us as we begin to
move from planning to action. All parishioners are invited to attend that
meeting (date to be announced) and be part of this ecumenical effort. If
you would like additional information, please contact Dave Albertine at
503-282-7848 or Bonnie Gregg at 503-284-0545.
In the meantime, you are invited to attend the Mayoral Candidate
Forum on Friday, April 1st 6:30-8:30 pm will be held at PCC 82nd Ave Campus,
2305 SE 82nd Ave in the Great Hall. The Northeast Interfaith Alliance is
a co-sponsor of this event along with the City Club East Portland Forum.
The mayoral candidate forum will include topics on poverty, homelessness,
community policing and other issues.
