April 28, 2016

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents,

As you know we have two tuition rates at The Madeleine, as do all parish supported elementary schools. Families who are active members of the parish are given a subsidy to help make Catholic education more affordable. Each year families who wish to receive this subsidy must fill out an affiliation form and return it to the parish. This year you can access the form by clicking here. A separate email will also be going out later this afternoon with the same information.

The deadline to return the form is May 16th. Next year’s tuition accounts will be set up in late May before the first June tuition payment. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the parish office.

Be sure you have our annual Art Show on your calendar for next Thursday evening at 6:00pm. I know Mrs. Galash could use some help with the event. Please contact her if you can be of service.

Have a great weekend,

Susan

constructionUpdate: Parish Hall Roof Repair

As you may be aware, the parish hall roofing replacement project launched on Monday. On Tuesday, the crew was removing and replacing rotten plywood underlayment in the section between the parish hall and the gymnasium. Their normal procedure is to secure the new underlayment, lay down membrane, lay down roofing and then seal with hot tar.

On the roof in this particular area is a "doghouse" - a small shed that houses a phase converter that runs the elevator in the school. Since this phase converter runs 24/7, there is a smoke detector housed inside the shed in case anything should go wrong with that equipment. The smoke from the tar triggered the smoke detector, and the fire alarm (appropriately) signaled an alarm, and the fire department was dispatched. Once the fire department learned what caused the alarm, they checked the area and found nothing amiss.

I do not anticipate further issues with the fire system as this area of the roof was completed on Tuesday. I do ask for your patience with the project at large. Our roofing contractors (the same who did the north wing of the school last year) are top notch - they are doing everything in their power to minimize disruption, and should be complete, weather permitting, by the end of next week.

I have seen a few questions raised about the timing of this project, and as I've stated in other communications, the reasons to proceed at this time are many. They range from the availability of our contractor, to the weather, to the scheduled uses of the facility, and the potential damage caused by delay. The decision would not have been made, or approved, if it were to put children, parishioners or staff at risk. There is no perfect time to do a project of this scale and nature that will not in some way inconvenience someone. We will continue to work with the contractor to minimize disruptions.

Thanks,

James Wurzer

Your 2015 Paddle Raise Dollars at Work!

Check out the video below!

As you know, our generous auction guests set a new record at the 2015 auction when $89,300 in restricted funds were raised for the Mad Science + Arts Wing. Thank you to everyone who raised his or her paddle high and contributed to the fabulous expansion of our science, technology and arts programs.

Highlighted in the video below are two pieces of equipment purchased with these restricted funds. First you will see a new technology resource, called Little Bits, available to our student technologists. The Little Bits Pro Library is the ultimate collection for collaboration and invention in a group setting, making it ideal for project-based learning and teamwork as well as intuitive electronics prototyping.

Next you will see the fourth graders using our new Vernier LabQuests and sensors, which are used to record temperature, oxygen concentration, pressure, and motion. They allow us to make much better measurements and do more "real-world" labs because they are so sensitive and automatically record and graph data.

Not shown, but in heavy use in the science lab, is the new Van der Graaf generator (used to teach about electricity and lightning) and lots of upgraded lab equipment, such as beakers, handboilers, dippy birds, and a large DNA model. In addition, new lab chemicals and science demonstration kits are ordered and used as needed.

Thank you to Madeleine alum, Colin Hammons (Class of 2013), for producing this video!

announcementUpdate: Madeleine School's New, Online Volunteer System

Thank you very much for taking the time to create your accounts in our new volunteer log system, "HelpCounter.” After working with the system for a week, here are a few clarifications and updates:

Unfortunately, there was a technical glitch when importing your old hours and processing the new applications. The old hours did import over, but only an administrator can see them. So, if you don't see your old info, don't panic. Just send me an email and I can tell you what they were for.

For those of you who have not created an account yet, it is a 2-4 step process (depending on how you look at it). They are:

  1. Fill out Volunteer Application at www.themadeleine.edu/hours
  2. Watch for an email with the subject line "Welcome to The Madeleine"
  3. Click on the link in that email to set up your user name and login
  4. Login and record/view/sign-up for hours

Thank you all for your patience as we transition to the new system. If you have any questions, send me an email at lrobinson@themadeleine.edu.

Lynn

P.S. If you need hours, login and click the tab "Upcoming Opportunities." Lots of help needed for May to help you get your 30 volunteer hours for the year. All hours need to be recorded by Saturday, May 29.

monarchNews from the Madeleine Garden

A second patch of native kinnikkinnik was planted in the strip along 24th Avenue to provide evergreen ground cover, competition for weeds, and blossoms for early season pollinators. Two new drought tolerant nectar plants will also be making butterflies and hummingbirds happy.

New to the Madeleine Garden and Wildlife Habitat is a Natural Weed Control Test Site. Stop by and check out the various earth-friendly methods for keeping weeds at bay and improving the soil. Which method do you predict will be the best? This is a great opportunity for students to use their prediction and observation skills as they stay in touch with the habitat.

Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) Training

Training begins May 14

In the event of a citywide or regional emergency such as a major earthquake, households need to be prepared to be on their own for at least a week. Neighborhoods need to be prepared for self-sufficiency, too. Volunteer neighborhood rescuers will likely be first on-the-scene when firefighters and police are slowed by impassable streets or overwhelmed by calls for help.

Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs) are Portland residents trained by the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management and Portland Fire & Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance within their own neighborhoods. NET members are trained to save lives and property until professional responders can arrive. Anyone who lives or works in Portland can take NET training.

The next Basic NET training begins on May 14. Click here for registration instructions. Click here if you want to learn more about Portland’s NET program. If you have any questions about the training, contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com. She was trained as a NET a few years ago and is active on the Alameda NET team.

hometourVolunteer at the Irvington Home Tour

Then you get to see the other homes on the tour for free, a $25.00 value per ticket. It’s a fun day for a good cause.

The Irvington Community Association uses the proceeds from The Home Tour to support and fund grants to local non-profits, schools, beautification projects, neighborhood events and preservation of the qualities inherent in the Historic Irvington community.

Confirmation Congratulations!

On Monday evening, 24 adults and youth from four parishes received the sacrament of Confirmation at The Madeleine with Bishop Peter Smith. Congratulations to all, and thank you to Julie Onderko and her dedicated catechists and volunteers!

Put your returnable cans & bottles to work for the Knights of Columbus!

Are you drowning in piles of returnable cans and bottles? Tired of taking them back to the store or to the state redemption centers? Donate them to the Knights of Columbus! They will bundle them up, take them back, collect the deposit.

Then comes the best part—they put the money to good use, supporting either local charities or building up their annual scholarship fund for Madeleine kids going to Catholic high schools.

Just put your bags of returnable cans and bottles for deposit to the carport behind the church on 23rd Avenue.

Save the date! Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood

Saturday, June 4 • Mass of Thanksgiving 10:00 am Sunday, June 5

Deacon Anthony Ahamefule has been one of the most popular seminarians/deacons we’ve had the pleasure of hosting at The Madeleine. His hard work, willingness to learn and to teach, and humble manner have combined to make him truly “our own.”

Deacon Anthony’s ordination to the Priesthood will be Saturday, June 4, 11:00 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. His Mass of Thanksgiving at The Madeleine will be at our 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, June 5, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Help show your appreciation for all he has done for us by attending one or both Masses.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!

Contributing to Friday Footnotes

If you have information to contribute to Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
