A Note from Susan
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to the last eleven (11!) weeks of school. The year has gone quickly, just like Spring Break did. I trust your Holy Week was prayerful and the Easter celebration was joyous. With this lovely spring weather, it is hard not to be joyous…..
The third trimester has begun and with it the last of the writing genres that we will be focusing on this year. In the fall the students wrote Narratives which tell a story. The second trimester was focused on Informative/Explanatory writing. Now we are moving on to Opinion writing. In opinion writing, the students pick a topic and proceed to state an opinion by telling what they think about that topic. They try to convince others to agree by giving reasons supported by facts. These facts can be examples or details that are presented in a logical order. Students also practice using topic sentences, adding detail sentences, and finishing with a conclusion. I think in these months before the November election, learning to write and critique opinion writing will be a valuable skill.
Have a great weekend,
Susan

Help the 8th Grade Go to Ashland!
Bring some cash and buy some delicous baked goods this Tuesday, April 5th after school. All proceeds will help defray the costs of the 8th Grade's Class Trip to Ashland.

The Jogathon Co-Chairs are asking parents to complete a brief survey in order
to select their child’s shirt size. T-shirts will be worn on event day. You
must complete the survey in order to receive a shirt. We will not be choosing
a size for your child. A separate survey must be completed for each child.
Please complete the survey by Tuesday, April 5.

Greetings from the Art Room!
Youth Arts Month came to a close with several more groups of students taking advantage of sunny weather to draw from life out in our Wildlife Habitat and Garden just north of Klickitat alongside the parking lot and Field of Dreams. They learned the names of several plants blooming at this time, looked for different leaf forms, and checked on our Monarch Butterfly Waystation. (The milkweed that is vital to Monarchs is not up yet, but we will be watching.) Two groups even had the opportunity to get up close and personal with Shot Weed, doing a five minute weeding frenzy and preventing untold thousands of new weeds. Ask your kids if they went out this week (then ask them which flower is called “Lady in the Bath”).
Just one week from today is our first-ever Multicultural Arts Festival, an event designed to bring a variety of arts from around the world to our entire student body. Friday morning will be a memorable one for your sons and daughters.
Check out the second annual HEART of Portland: A PPS K-12 Arts Showcase at the Portland Art Museum April 4-16. The showcase is a special celebration of the visual and performing arts produced by students from schools across the district.
Keep making ART!

Create a Hope Kit for Medical Teams International
The 7th Grade class recently visited the Medical Teams International REAL LIFE exhibit in Tigard on March 15th. This exhibit explicitly depicts how people around the world are suffering due to political unrest, poverty, and natural disasters.
In response to this experience, our students committed to making at least one Hope Kit. The class also invited the broader school community to participate too. This isn't about having you as parents buy the items. In my opinion it is something that should come from the students... whether that be earned through extra chores, out of an allowance, or through sacrificing something else (skip a soda). I'll let you decide that as a family.
Click here to learn what needs to go into your Hope Kit.
If you wish to participate, please drop off your Hope Kit by April 8th in the collection box near the school entrance.

Family Faith Sharing
April 3, Second Sunday of Easter, John 20:19-31
Today’s Gospel tells of the Risen Lord’s appearance to the disciples. Jesus’ disciples were confused and afraid as they gathered together. Jesus came to the place where they were and said, “Peace be with you” and showed them his hands and side. Thomas, who was not there that day, did not believe the others until Jesus appeared again and showed him his hands and side.
How do you think the disciples felt when they saw Jesus? How would you feel if Jesus appeared to you today? Do you sometimes have difficulty believing something that you have not seen for yourself? Give an example.

Welcome Janeen Reilly as our new Parish Administrator!
It’s very likely you’ve seen Janeen Reilly working as hard for our parish
and school as just about anyone.
She served as the chair and chief organizer of our Centennial Celebration.
She has served as lead organizer for countless annual events, including
our Mardi Gras, Wine Tasting, Crab Feed and Madeleine Marketplace. Before
that, she was a longtime school parent, heavily involved in many volunteer
areas including service as a multi-time chair of The Madeleine Auction.
So just when she thought she had retired from her longtime position as
owner of her family machinery-distribution business, along came an opportunity
she could not resist.
