A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Fr. Mike and I would like to thank the members of SAC that are finishing their term this year: Jim Jones, John Lance, and Penny Pettey. Their contributions were greatly appreciated and they will be missed.

At the same time we would like to welcome our new members: Heather Matteri, Meg Scharle and Anne Steiner! These new members will serve three year terms. Jim Jones will also stay on another year to finish the term of Jonathan Tillman. We had many excellent applicants this year and thank you to everyone who applied. Each year we have three openings, so please consider applying next year if you are interested. SAC is a great way to get involved in the formation of the school and to support the administration and staff.

Students in grades 6-8 next year are invited to join our Spanish class, which meets Monday through Thursday from 7:45 to 8:25. This is a wonderful opportunity to begin learning a world language before high school. If your child is interested, is able to juggle extra-curricular activities, has a disciplined routine for homework, and is willing to arrive at school a little earlier than usual, please consider enrolling. There is no extra charge for this class. Once enrolled, the class will become part of your child’s academic program. There will be homework, class assignments, tests, quizzes, projects, etc. and will be factored into his/her GPA. I will be speaking to the students next week about this opportunity and answering any questions they may have. I will give interested students an enrollment form which needs to be returned before the end of the school year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to those parents who have returned their summer packet. The winners of the $5 Starbuck card (for being in the first 20 returns) are Diani, Gonzales, Siegel, Olson, Gaber, O’Leary, Codino, Dugan, O’Connor, Stolberg, Jones, Drapcho, Ryan, Gillen, Robertson, Allen, Ukishima, Holzschuh, Slaughter, and Daellenbach. Way to go!!

Now for the other 140 students we haven’t heard from…..please return the forms ASAP. Mrs. Rosebrook needs the information soon so she is not in the office until August. Thanks for your prompt attention to this.

Have a great weekend.

                                                          Sincerely,
                                                          Susan

2014 Annual Fund Campaign

This year we awarded $61,500 in tuition assistance to 41 children.  At The Madeleine, all families are truly welcome and we do not turn away any family in need of financial assistance who wants to provide a Catholic education for their children.

Our Annual Fund Campaign supports our tuition assistance program and as of today, we have received $8,065 towards our $25,000 goal for 2014. One hundred percent of your donations to the Annual Fund are matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Foundation.

Ways to give to the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign:

All of your donations are 100% tax deductible and will be matched dollar for dollar by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation.

On behalf of all our 41 students who receive financial aid, thank you for your generous support!!

Scrip Purchase Deadline Extended to June 1!

* * * Click Here for a Scrip Order Form* * *

If you haven't yet fulfilled your commitment to purchase $2,000 in Scrip, don't despair!  The deadline to buy Scrip has been extended to June 1. If you are not purchasing Scrip this year, please drop off a check for $200 with Angela in the school office.

One way to meet your Scrip commitment is to stock up on Scrip for the summer.  Think of all food you'll be buying at Fred Meyer and New Seasons for BBQs, picnics and camping trips. Home and garden projects can get a boost with scrip from Home Depot and Lowe's.  And, of course, you'll need scrip from REI, Dick's, and Sports Authority to buy all the outdoor gear for your summer adventures.

Questions? Contact Jolynn.mitchell@gmail.com.

Madeleine BOB Team Takes Third Place

On Wednesday, May 28th, the Madeleine School Battle of the Books Team (BOB) competed against St. Clare and Our Lady of Lourdes for our annual Battle of the Books.

It was a morning of tense moments while each of the teams searched their brains for answers to detailed questions about the assigned books.  In the end, Our Lady of Lourdes took 1st place, followed by St. Clare and Madeleine. Everyone then enjoyed a pizza lunch together.

Rising 5th graders who love to read can look forward to joining the team in the Fall!

Note from the Library

All Books Due June 6th

All library books are due to the school library on Friday, June 6th. Policy is that if you do not return library books, you will have to pay the replacement cost of the book. All fees need to be turned into the library in order to get report cards on the last day of school. Thank you in advance for getting books and fees in on time.

Summer Reading at Madeleine

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge

Our school is participating in a fun summer reading project: the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge unites students from around the globe in an attempt to set a new world record for most minutes read this summer! We will be looking for the top readers at Madeleine from each classroom when we come back to school in the fall! Last year we came in 2nd in the state. I know we can win 1st place this year!

Studies show that kids who read over the summer maintain the reading skills developed during the school year. This summer-long reading campaign is designed to motivate all children to read more so they maintain and improve their academic skills.

Students in grade K-2 received their login information today in Friday Folders. Grade 3-7 have been logging minutes in class and have all of their information in their school Google Drive account.

Please click here to visit Madeleine's Homepage for the link to log minutes.

Thank you so much for your family's participation.

Interested in a Pre-K program at The Madeleine in September 2014?

www.themadeleine.edu/pre-k

Our Pre-K Planning Committee has been exploring the feasibility of a Catholic, faith-based Pre-K program at The Madeleine starting in September 2014. They’re in the initial stages of planning and are looking at a wide variety of options for the program.

They need your feedback!

If you, or someone you know, is interested in finding out more about a Pre-K program at The Madeleine, please visit www.themadeleine.edu/pre-k and fill out the brief form. For the upcoming school year, a child would need to be 4 years old by September 1, 2014. When we have more information, we will be back in contact with you.

St. Michael's Lunches: 2nd Grade

Congratulations to the second grade for bringing in 211 sack lunches this week.  What a fantastic way to end the month of May.  Just one more week of lunches before we wrap up our school year of giving,  It seems like we are ending with a lot of enthusiasm!  Next week the 1st grade gets to pack the final lunches. Job well done!

Counselor Corner

What Should I Read Next?

When I get to the end of a book I have really loved, my husband says I always do the same thing -- gently close the book, clutch it to my chest, close my eyes, take a deep breath, let it out slowly and then say, "Wow, that was a great book. I just hate it when they come to an end."

What I find so difficult in coming to the end of a great read is the dangling feeling I get- finished with one book and not sure what to read next. If you are one of those people who is looking for what to read next, this is the site for you. Just put in the title and/or author of a book and it will give you a number of suggestions for what you might like to read next!

The amazing thing about this site is that it does the same thing for movies and music. This is a "must-bookmark" site for sure!!

Send us your 2014 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of The Madeleine’s Class of 2014 high school graduates in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduates’ names by June 14 so we may list them in our June 21 bulletin.

Cantors and choir members wanted

A special request from our Music Director Kit Taylor and Choir Director Becky Moore: if you love to sing, we’d love to have you sing for The Madeleine! We could use your help in several areas:

This volunteer position requires no previous cantoring experience...you will work with and be trained by Kit.

Singers and musicians

We welcome any new singers or musicians to be part of any of our three choir groups.

Children’s Choir: All ages welcome, but the ability to read is essential
Contemporary Choir: This upbeat group sings modern praise and worship music

Classic Choir: Traditional hymns and arrangements.
If you’re interested in joining us, or just have questions, contact Kit Taylor, ktaylor@themadeleine.edu or Becky Moore, bmoore@themadeleine.edu.
