A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our Jogathon event is only 4 weeks away and the buzz is growing. This is our second largest fundraiser and a huge “Fun Raiser” for the students. The goal is for every child to gather $150 in pledges so that we can hit our goal of $35,000. Incentives include lots of great prizes for the kids so please click here to check out the Jogathon website. Many thanks to our wonderful chairs, Shelby Walker and Kelsi Charlesworth, and to the new “Moola Person,” Ann Reno for organizing the Jogathon.

It seems there are a number of school calendar revisions floating around and so there is some confusion about upcoming events. The current Google online calendar is correct, but just for clarity….

I am sorry about any confusion, but when dates are selected and published sometimes a year in advance, there are bound to be conflicts.

Two other reminders….

Please remember to log your volunteer hours online. You can click here to get that done right now.  I think the Jogathon is in need of some help.

Scrip letters are going home today. Anne Palmer put together this information on where each family is on their required scrip purchases for the year. If you have any questions, please give her a call at 503-281-5777.

Finally, a big thank you for your participation in our first Lenten service project-JOIN. We collected many bags of socks, shampoo, conditioner, razors, pain relievers, etc. The people at JOIN were so happy to unload my car filled with your generous donations.

Sincerely,
Susan Steele

School-wide Service Project = Heifer International

Next week the school is sponsoring a coin drive to support Heifer International, an organization that provides families in developing nations with the gift of an animal.  The animal's offspring are passed on to another family, so that the gift keeps giving.

Madeleine students can earn five different pins next week by bringing in different types of denominations as follows:

Students who have earned all five pins by Friday will also receive a Heifer pencil. In addition, pins will be for sale before school, thanks to the Student Council's help.

At the end of the week, the pool of money the school collected will be counted and divided by nine.  Each of the nine classes will then have the opportunity to pick out the animal or share of an animal that they would like to buy.

Thanks for supporting Heifer!

How to Apply for Financial Aid

Families who would like to apply for financial aid for the 2014-2015 school year may still do so by completing an application at www.factstuitionaid.com.  The deadline to be eligible for Archdiocesan aid has passed, but families may still be eligible for funds provided directly by The Madeleine. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give Susan a call.

An Update on Matthew

Fourth grader, Matthew A., had surgery on Monday and will be out of school for a long while. Susie, his mom, shared these two pictures of him before he went in for the surgery. He wanted to tell everyone he misses school, but not homework or assemblies!  Mrs. Slavik asks everyone to please keep him in their prayers!

St. Michael's Lunches: 1st Grade

A big thank you to the first grade class who brought in 183 lunches this week.  It can be challenging to remember this task your first week back to school after spring break but the first grade students did a great job.  These April days are often wet and even though spring is in the air, hearty, health lunches and warm socks are still appreciated.

Pay Attention to Attention

Check out the link below to an article recently published by Daniel Goleman, Ph.D.   This internationally known psychologist talks about attention and our obligation to start thinking differently about it and reinforcing it in our children.

Show your Madeleine pride!

“M” static cling window decals for sale in the scrip office for $5.  Cash or check only please since it needs to be a separate transaction from scrip.  Funds raised will go toward the school’s area of greatest need.

Development Update

The Madeleine is strong because of its people who give time, talent and treasure.  Thank you to Tom Byrnes, Peter Corrado, and Janice Slonecker for giving their time and talent by participating on our Annual Fund Task Force.  Their expertise in the areas of development, fundraising and business brings valuable ideas to The Madeleine.

In this and future issues of Friday Footnotes, keep an eye out for information from the Development Office as we strive to make the topic of Development less puzzling.  For example, did you know that the Madeleine School website has a giving page?  Check it out by clicking here!  Gifts in honor of a special occasion, such as a birthday or graduation are always thoughtful gifts. Those in memory of a loved one are a special tribute as well.

Madeleine Students Participate in We Day

6th graders who successfully submitted a two paragraph essay stating how they help others through service to local and global communities won We Day tickets to this year's concert in Seattle, Washington. We Day is put on by Free the Children, which is an organization started by two brothers when they were twelve years old. Free the Children empowers children from all over the world to join together to help those in need.

Pictured above are Julia S. and Bailey B. with the We mascot.

Communal Reconciliation is Sunday

Sunday, April 6 • 11:30 am

At your Baptism, God forgave all your sins.  Afterward, whenever you fall, God extends an embrace of mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  This year, we’re holding our Lenten Communal Reconciliation on Sunday after Mass in the hope that all parishioners will be able to attend. We will have additional priests available to hear your confessions.

Take time this week to prepare for Reconciliation by inviting the Holy Spirit to help you to examine your conscience. Look to the past and reflect on the wrongs you have done.  Look to the present and think of the bad habits you wish to break.  Look to the future to see how you wish to grow closer to God and others.

Please join us in this celebration of God’s mercy.

Paschal Triduum begins April 17

Our holiest,  liturgically most important time of the year. Please arrange your schedules appropriately, and make every effort to worship with us:

Holy Thursday, April 17
7:00 pm—Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

Good Friday, April 18
7:00 pm—Celebration of the Lord’s Passion

Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 19
9:00 pm—Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter
