A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The safety and security of the children you have entrusted to us is always a priority. Last year, after the horrific events in Sandy Hook, we formed a Safety Committee to brainstorm ideas and advise on issues that would add to our campus security. We made some immediate changes, such as locking doors, adding key fobs for entry, dismantling locks, changing the classroom door locks, installing an override to the automatic door locks for emergencies, and adding security cameras at school and parish entries. Next week we will be participating in the Great Oregon Shake-Out, which is an annual earthquake drill, as well as conducting our monthly fire drill. I have included a PDF from this organization which I think you will find helpful in planning for your own earthquake preparedness at home. Click here to view the PDF.

We also will be conducting a Lock Down/Lock Out drill. If we receive information that there is a dangerous situation in the neighborhood, but not directly on or near the school, we go into Lock Out. All exterior doors are locked (as they usually are), and shades are drawn, but we continue with activities inside the building as normal. If the danger is on campus or in the immediate vicinity, we go into Lock Down. Students are sheltered into an area where visibility is limited (away from shaded windows, doors with glass panels, hallway windows, etc.) and we stay in that configuration until we receive an “All Clear” from the police department. Parents are not allowed entry to the school during this time. I know your first impulse, after hearing of a potential danger, might be to come and get your child from school. However, we follow the directives given to us by “authorities” (ie. Archdiocese, Portland Police) for best practices in emergency situations.

I would caution about making a big issue of all the safety drills we do with the students, beyond listening and affirming the reason for practice drills. We want to impress upon them the need to be prepared and to know what to do in an emergency, but not cause undo anxiety about events beyond their control or understanding. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

- Chinook Book (and app) on Sale Now (50% back)
- McMenamins: Time for movies, pizza and beer! (12% back)

- Washman: Keep your car clean without getting wet! (26% back)

- Look for your Scrip order form in the Friday Folder

Two Ways to Order Scrip!

Click Here for your Scrip Order Form

Print your scrip form and pop it in an envelope with ‘SCRIP’, your child’s name and teacher with a check and give it to your child to drop off at the Scrip office.

Or, look for your form in the Friday Folders for K-5.  Either way, scrip ordered by 9 am on Tuesday will be available for pick up or sent home with your child on Friday. Easy Peasy!

We are brainstorming ideas on the use of Credit Cards.  In the meantime, Target (2%) is only available to purchase with checks.

We are expanding our scrip program to make it more available to our school community.  Hence, we need more volunteers –

Selling scrip is also a great way to make sure you purchase your own scrip and to get more than enough volunteer hours under your belt.  Please contact Cathy Baker Keaney if you are the slightest bit interested!

So much art!

By now all grades have wrapped up their Kids' Kreations projects for the auction note cards and posters and new projects are under way.  You can see samples of Kids' Kreations art from each grade above the bulletin board near the office.  Convenient ordering is available on line at the auction website.

Soon the halls near the Art room will be filled with student art for you to enjoy.  The displays change quickly, so stop by often to check out their colorful, creative work.

Here's a slice of life from the Art room this Tuesday:  Overheard in the hall - “Today we have music, art and volley ball.  This is a good day.”  “I wish we could have art every day.”  Tuesday's art classes worked with pebbles, sand, glue, watercolor, clear glue gel, salt, chalk pastel, glitter paint, tempera paint, toothbrushes, combs, texture stamps, and more.  And that was just three grades!

Rest assured, art is alive and well at The Madeleine.  Have a great weekend and keep making art!
