A Note from Kate

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Susan has asked me to take over her column this week to announce my successor as the school's Library/Media Specialist. As you may already know, I asked for the 6th grade position for next school year. I truly miss the relationships that are built in the classroom, and I miss teaching core subjects. This shift allowed for a new hire in the Library/Media Specialist position. We are very excited and honored that Alison Anderson has accepted this position here at Madeleine. Alison has been an active member in our community for many years. She was an employee of Madeleine a few years ago when Michelle Doran and I had our second babies. Alison took the other half of the job-share while Michelle and I were out on our separate maternity leaves. She demonstrated what an excellent teacher and colleague she is during that year. Alison's three children have been here at Madeleine as well. Ted and Rose attended Madeleine, and Ceci is in 5th grade this year.

Alison will be joining our staff with a wealth of knowledge and experience as Library/Media Specialist. She is leaving her current job as Managing Editor of GettingSmart.com, which is a website dedicated to innovations in learning. Prior to this past year at Getting Smart, Alison was the technology teacher at Holy Cross in North Portland. After working on a committee with her that year, attending conferences together, and seeking her advice on various projects, believe me when I say our school is lucky she chose us.

Please join us in congratulating Alison on her new position!

Have a great weekend,
Kate Chambers

Hats Off to Mrs. Galash for a Wonderful Art Show!

Once again the Parish Hall was transformed into an art gallery. Proud students could be seen showing off the results of their creative efforts.  From snowmen to peacocks to frogs, flowers, and flipbooks -- there was something to catch everyone's eye!  Start making room on your walls and fridges, because all the great artwork will be coming home in the coming weeks.

Thank you again to Mrs. Galash and her volunteers for putting on such a great event!

Parent Education Survey

One of the Target Goals of the 5 Year Plan, developed by the School Advisory Council, is to ensure The Madeleine School offers an ongoing, relevant educational program to enrich and expand parental comprehension pertaining to understanding the development of the whole child.

The Parent Club has taken on the responsibility of finding out what topics are of interest to our parent community as we move forward with this goal. Building on the success of past meeting topics such as adolescent brain development, social media, and developing responsibility in children, we would like to ask you to take a quick survey on topics to be considered for the future.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DH8JKBX  to take the survey.

Hot Lunch Survey

Last November, at our Auction, we had a "paddle raise" to fund improvements to our kitchen. Those upgrades are being reviewed by our business manager and the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the work should be completed this summer.

With those improvements comes the option of offering a hot lunch program to our students. We need to hear from our parent community to see if there is enough interest to support this program. We have put a very short preliminary survey together to see if we should pursue having a hot lunch program.

Please go to the link below and answer the questions. Please respond how your child would participate in such a program. For example, everyone may think that a hot lunch program would be a great asset to our school, but if only 10% of the children ordered, it would not be economically feasible. So please respond based on your family's actual participation.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/93SJDY2 to take the survey.

The kitchen remodel will happen whether we offer hot lunch or not. We still use the kitchen many times during the year and will enjoy the upgrade.

The Madeleine School Alumni Reunion

Tickets for the event are $30 per person. All proceeds will benefit The Madeleine School Endowment or Tuition Assistance Fund.

Apply Now for the Laskowski Family Tuition Assistance Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, May 23rd

In November of 2010, The Madeleine School’s live auction Paddle Raise inspired donors to give $40,000 in honor of Pat and Kathy Laskowski. The Laskowskis sent five children to The Madeleine School between 1996 and 2011 and are current members of The St. Mary Magdalene Parish. During their 15 years as Madeleine School parents they volunteered as coaches, Athletic Director, scrip sales, auction wait staff, church nursery, Little Church, and many other school and parish activities.  In order to give their children a Catholic education they received financial aid, but more importantly they are role models of their faith by being active members in the Catholic Church.

Heifer Project Results: $995!

This year's Lenten Service Project had tremendous results!  The total raised for the Heifer project was $995.41, which was allocated among all the classrooms.  Each class voted for how to spend their allocation with Heifer International.

Inspired by the crisis in Nigeria, the middle schoolers decided to pool their allocations and send a girl to school!  The elementary classes allocated their funds toward the following:

Counselor Corner

Everyone responds to stressful situations in different ways. One event may cause you a great deal of stress, but another may not bother you at all. That is because it is not the event that causes us our stress, but what we think about that event that bothers us.

Bike + Walk To School Day Success!

The participation for Bike + Walk to School Day was tremendous!  As you can see, there wasn't even room on the rack for all the bikes.

Thank you to the Care for Creation Committee for making sure we all knew about this important day and for handing out stickers to all the participants.

We just received our first report from Fred Meyer and the school will be receiving a check for $602.50 for the period between 2/01/14 and 3/31/14! Currently only 34 families are registered. If every school family registered, we would generate $19,367 per year for the school!

Maddie, the parish puppy, welcomes Archbishop Sample to the 79th Annual Seminary Tea, held last week at The Madeleine. Catholics from all over the area attended the tea, held each spring to assist the Archbishop in funding the education of seminarians for our Archdiocese. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success!

Say Farewell to Deacon Tim this weekend

It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming Deacon Tim Furlow into our parish for his pastoral internship year. And, sadly, as with the interns before him, his tenure with us has come to an end.

Deacon Tim has made a big impression in his short time here, with his easy manner, his selfless willingness to do anything asked of him, and his humility, in spite of his immense knowledge and capabilities.

Deacon Tim will preach at The Madeleine for the last time during his year in residence this weekend, May 10–11. Please join us for a reception after our 5:00 pm Saturday Mass and our 10 am Sunday Mass. Deacon Tim’s last official day is May 18.

Send us your 2014 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of The Madeleine’s Class of 2014 high school graduates in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduates’ names by June 14 so we may list them in our June 21 bulletin.

Children’s Choir seeking members

The next time the Children’s Choir will sing at Mass will be Sunday, June 1st at 10 am. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:10 PM in the school commons music room (enter through rose garden double doors). Anyone interested can just come to rehearsal or email me: bmoore@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!

If you have information to contribute to the Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
