A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I don’t know about you, but January used to be a quiet month to unwind from the holidays. Spring activities were on the horizon, but still too early to do anything yet. Now we have Catholic Schools Week activities, Open House activities, a huge data report for the Archdiocese (I really love crunching numbers!), teacher observations, preliminary budgeting tasks, and rounding up Auction chairs and sub chairs for next year. What happened to that post Christmas catch-your-breath time??
The good thing is that most of the upcoming tasks are fun. Please click here to check out the Catholic Schools Week schedule. I hope you can attend Sunday’s 10:00 Mass so our parish knows how grateful we are for their support. If you can stop by for coffee and donuts on Wednesday morning, we would love to treat you on Parent Appreciation Day. Also, parents are always welcome at our school Mass on Thursday.
Open House and budgeting go hand-in-hand, so please return your re-registration form to Angela. She is building next year’s enrollment rosters and doesn’t want to leave anyone out. We probably will have a few openings in the middle and intermediate grades so if you have a neighbor or friend who might be interested in The Madeleine, please have them contact me.
Finally a big thank you to our third grade parents who attended last night’s Auction meeting. There were lots of good questions and insightful comments from the group. We will be meeting again next week, getting closer to forming a leadership team. Stay tuned.
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Susan

Catholic Schools Week Is Here!
January 26th - January 31st
There are lots of fun activities going on all week long. From a procession by class at Mass on Sunday to Free Dress and a Friendship Family activity on Tuesday to a Pennies for the Poor competition going on all week, there's a little something for everyone to enjoy!
Click here for the complete Catholic Schools Week schedule of activities.
Pennies for the Poor
During Catholic Schools week (January 27-31) The Madeleine School is participating in “Pennies for the Poor” fundraiser. Each class will have a milk jug to fill with change, pennies and paper are positive and silver change is a negative point for your class, so place your coins strategically! All of the money raised will go to St. Andre Bassette homeless ministry, formerly known as the Downtown Chapel. Look for the jugs outside the office during Catholic Schools week, and start collecting your pennies!
Student Government
Free Dress for $2
Tuesday, January 28th
On Student Appreciation Day during Catholic Schools Week, all students are invited to come to school in free dress in exchange for bringing in $2, which will go toward the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign.

St. Michael's Lunches: Kindergarten
The Kindergarten class hit a home run this week when they brought in 245 beautifully labeled, nutritious sack lunches. A number of families brought in 20-40 lunches which is truly remarkable! A huge thank you for taking the time to make wholesome meat sandwiches and labeling each lunch bag. This makes unpacking and sorting lunches very easy for our 8th graders and St Michael’s volunteers. Because of your generosity, our friends are St Michael’s are eating well this week.

Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith
Today as we celebrate the beginning of Catholic Schools Week it is fitting that we should reflect on the heartening words of Psalm 27. We read of our Lord who is our “refuge,” a temple of “safety, a dwelling, a house.” In this we learn that the guiding principle of our faith is trust in God, both in times of rejoicing and in times of fear. Isn’t this what we give to our children, both our own children and the children in our parish school which you so generously support, when we give them the gift of a Catholic education?
The theme for the celebration of Catholic Schools Week for the next three years is “Communities of faith, knowledge and service.” This year the focus is on faith. The letter to the Hebrews tells us that “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for.” This is the blessing of a Catholic education. Students learn the content of their Catholic faith and they also learn to hope in the promises found there. Through all of the difficulties of life they retain an inner peace and “strength of soul” that comes from their recourse, learned in Catholic Schools, to personal and communal prayer.
In my work in Catholic schools I have seen this profoundly lived out. The school community celebrates many happy days together: victories in sports, achievements in academics and the arts and so many days of fun and friendship. In times of tragedy and loss we hold fast to each other and to God who is our “stronghold.” I have often wondered what a community does, in both times of joy and despair, if it cannot raise up its voice in prayer to the “author of all.”
I thank my parents often for the gift of my faith and for the many sacrifices they made to send me and my siblings to Catholic schools. My formation there has stood as a firm foundation throughout my life and the Church that I came to love has been a home to which I can always return.
Let us continue to pray fervently for our beloved Madeleine school and for Catholic schools throughout the world that we might always have the “pearl of great price” that is a Catholic education.
