A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our students in grade 3-8 began standardized testing this week and will continue through next week. These tests, the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), are achievement tests taken by students all over the nation. The purpose of the testing is to provide us with information that can be used to improve instruction and to check each student’s year-to-year growth. We can also identify areas of strength and areas needing improvement. The results from the ITBS are not used on report cards. While they are helpful in identifying trends, growth in skills, and areas in need of remediation, they do not take the place of teacher observations and judgments. They are one piece of the puzzle that we put together to build a strong curriculum and learning environment.

We want our students to take the testing seriously and try to do their best, but it can be harmful if our children are fearful of the testing situation and anxious about their performance. You can help us by being positive about standardized testing when talking to your child.  We should have the results of the testing back by November and you will receive a report of your child’s scores. If you have any questions about the testing program, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

The midway point in the first trimester is quickly approaching. Please check with your child if he/she has any missing assignments. Parents in grades 5-8 should be checking Teacherease to verify assignments and grades. If you do not know how to log on to our grading program, please email your child’s teacher.

Two other notes….Our annual Auction is just 4 weeks away. Please be sure to check out the Auction website for opportunities to donate, volunteer, buy raffle tickets, get reservations, and just get involved.  It is going to be quite a gala evening, and you won’t want to miss it.

Also, a big thank you for purchasing scrip. Our sales are going up and we are trying to make it as easy as possible for you to use the program. You will find an order form in your child's Friday Folder and a link in today's newsletter. If you can't get into the school to purchase, just fill out the form and we can send it home with your child.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

Auction Tickets (and more) On Sale Now!

You can not only order your auction tickets, but also Kids Kreations cards, easel items, and Centennial Books.

Potential Raffle Ticket Revenue equals $60,000!

If we sell all our raffle tickets, the school will make $60,000 on just this one auction revenue source!  This is a huge chunk towards our Parents Club Annual Fundraising goal of $200,000!  Remember, 1st prize is a $5,000 dream vacation OR $5,000 tuition credit.

Have any friends who go to other Catholic elementary schools or LaSalle, Central Catholic, Jesuit, St. Mary’s? Yes, the tuition credit applies to those schools as well! Going to a Central or Jesuit football game this weekend? I bet you could sell a couple to those sitting around you in the bleachers. Or, how about that CYO Football or Volleyball game or swimming practice; the other team is a Catholic school right?

Thank you in advance for doing your best to sell your tickets!  Happy Selling.

New Annual Fund Total

Yellow Star

Thanks to the generosity of the Madeleine community, our Annual Fund Campaign continues to grow!  Our latest total is $26,226.  Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done in exceeding our goal by $1,226 in the inaugural year of the Annual Fund Campaign.

The funds raised by the Annual Fund will be applied to both the Endowment and Tuition Assistance Funds in order to keep Catholic education affordable for all Madeleine families.

Bring Your Non-Perishable Food

for St. Vincent de Paul

Record numbers of Oregonians seek emergency food.

The Madeleine School recently celebrated the life and mission of Saint Vincent de Paul. In fellowship with this great and good servant of God, and to assist our local St. Vincent de Paul ministry, students are encouraged to continue bringing non-perishable food items (no glass containers, please) to their classrooms from through October 16th  - World Food Day. Please help The Madeleine Community “respond to the call to serve others” as indicated in our Spiritual School Wide Learning Expectation.

Click here for a suggested list of food items.

Thank you!

Greetings from the Art Department!

There has been a frenzy of activity in the newly revamped Art Room.  Students in all grades have been creating art with a sunset/evening/nighttime image to compliment this year's auction theme, A Night to Remember.  These little treasures are receiving finishing touches, then will be scanned and made ready to be transformed into Kids Kreations, beautiful note cards featuring your child's art.  Watch the bulletin board near the office for a sampling of the artwork from your child's grade.

If you haven't yet had a chance to peek into the Art Room this fall, come on by.  Your generous donations during last year's Auction paddle raise helped make the renovation possible.  Highlights include visible and accessible storage of supplies, sound absorbing panels (yay!) the center table can now actually be walked around (yay again!) and art from around the world, many pieces from Mrs. Galash's private collection, others purchased for the art room.  There is also a flat file to store and protect the wonderful new art prints which were also purchased with paddle raise funds.

Next up:  new projects for all nine grades.  Stay tuned!

St. Michael's Lunches: 5th grade

The fifth grade delivered 94 lunches to St Michael’s this week. When the eighth graders and I arrived at the church basement, hot ginger soup was simmering away in the kitchen.  Warm soup and hearty lunches are exactly what our Portland friends need during this stormy week of October.

Our running total of lunches for the school year is 555.

To all donors to Moe's Miles for The Madeleinehand

Due to extreme weather conditions and communication problems (due to the weather), the Mountain Lakes I00 was stopped mid-race. I made it to the aid station at mile 76.25 and was (unofficially) in 5th place when the race was stopped. The race directors' decision to stop the race is one I totally agree with. I was feeling great at that point, and barring serious injury, I feel I would have easily finished the race under the 30 hour time limit, if not even under my goal of under 24 hours. The entire race was motivated by your support to the Madeleine. And that is what carried me.

If you have any concerns or questions for me or about the race, please email me at Cmcodino@msn.com.  If you pledged per mile, and would like a refund, we would be happy to process a refund.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for donating to Moe's Miles for The Madeleine. It was my honor to help the school and church doing something I love, run.

Moe Codino

P.S. Your donations to date equal $5,018! This will feed many people via our outreach ministries and help put the finishing touches on our inclusive playground for children with mobility challenges.

Little Church for children Ages 2 – 5

During 10 am Mass 1st & 3rd Sundays

Little Church in the Fireside Room got off to a great start last weekend; now all we need is you and your child! Drop off at 9:50. We have four trained volunteers who are delighted to train new parents. If you missed the training, we can get you caught up. We could use a donation of gently used, clean toys for Little Church. Please drop items off at the rectory to Tina Hanselman.

Children’s liturgy of the Word—behavior reminder.

We are pleased to offer Children’s Liturgy od the Word to help bring the messages of the week’s scriptures to our younger parishioners.

Remember, this program is run by volunteers. Rowdy and unruly behavior is not pleasant for our volunteers to deal with and will not be tolerated. Please remind your child to behave or you may find him/her unable to attend Children’s Liturgy any longer. Thank you.

Keep our Sacramental Prep students in your prayers

We are blessed to have 40 children preparing to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. They are working hard with frequent classes. We thank the parents for making this a priority, and for fitting this important preparation into their busy schedules.
