A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the March 21st Footnotes I talked about personnel changes for next year. If you missed that column, you can review it so what I am about to say makes sense. Now let’s see, where did we leave off….. With Mr. Parker moving to 7th grade, I am delighted to announce that Mrs. Tina Hanselman, our parish Faith Formation Director, will be taking over the 8th grade classroom. Tina has been our “go to” person when we have needed a substitute in middle-school for the last two years. She has her degree in journalism and a teaching endorsement in middle school Language Arts and Social Studies. Her experience working in faith formation also prepares her for guiding our 8th graders on their faith journey. She will be working with Ms. Bourke to continue and build on the incredible reading and writing program that Allyson has developed in her nine years. Rob also will be there to help with the graduation and high school responsibility transition. Tina has a sunny, positive disposition, is a “team player” and is thrilled to be back in the classroom after a few years as a stay-at-home mom. I am so happy to welcome her to the faculty.

The need to be a stay-at-home mom has prompted another change in the staff. Mrs. Christina Gladwin, one of our 5th grade teachers, has decided that the demands of family life call for her to take a break from teaching. She is not “retiring” (she is way too young for that!), so I hope that when life calms down a bit, she will return to the classroom. I first hired Christina when I was the principal at OLS, and she was a fresh graduate of the University of Idaho. We have worked together for many years. She is one of those people who is a natural teacher, and it has been a pleasure to have seen her grow into the master teacher she is today.

Another change prompted by motherhood involves our 6th grade teacher, Ann Hart. Ann and her husband Chris are expecting a baby!  She will be taking a maternity leave after the September arrival and will be home until December. With the demands of the new little one, she has asked to take Christina’s place and job share with Ms. Doran in 5th grade. Ann student taught in 4th grade with Mrs. Slavik and has been the 6th grade teacher for the past 3 years, so she is very familiar with this student population. Michelle will teach full time until Ann returns and will be a great mentor, both as a teacher and a working mother. Congratulations, Ann and Chris.

OK, so now we need a new 6th grade teacher to take Ann’s place. I was surprised, but delighted that Mrs. Chambers, our librarian/media specialist, asked to return to the classroom full time. Kate was our 5th grade teacher before she took time off to start her family. After Jack was born, she and Michelle began the job share in 5th and then took over the library/media two years ago. She has been the catalyst behind the many technology initiatives on campus. Teachers have so appreciated her ideas and suggestions on websites, iPad usage, blogs, educational apps, Google “stuff,” the wireless network, and all the other applications that I barely understand. She has certainly challenged and pushed us as we move forward with technology. Kate told me she loved her job, but missed having her own class to teach. She gave us a great foundation, and we will find someone to take us to the next level.

Stay tuned….

Sincerely,
Susan Steele

Important Information Regarding Tax Identity Fraud

In the parish bulletin on April 6, we published a letter from the Archdiocese stating, "a number of employees and volunteers of the Archdiocese of Portland, parishes, and schools have been victims of tax-identity fraud. Victims' Social Security numbers have been used in fraudulent federal tax returns for the year 2013." You can see the entire letter here.

The Archdiocese of Portland is recommending that all volunteers and employees who have undergone an Archdiocesan background check do the following as soon as possible:

Important Auction Form

Going home with your child today is a brief form from the 2014 Auction Committee to help them make the best of The Madeleine communities' vast resources.  Please complete the form and return it in your child's Friday Folder or to Angela by April 18. Completion of this form is good for 1 volunteer hour for the current school year!

You can also download the auction form here.

Parish Affiliation Form

Families who are registered and active in a parish may request a subsidy to lower their tuition rate. We are so blessed to be a part of a parish that financially supports a Catholic school. We have operated for over 100 years as an active ministry of The Madeleine Church. All of the Madeleine parishioners are stakeholders in this school community. Their generosity has helped us build an excellent educational program, nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of all students.

If you would like to request the “in-parish” rate, you need to fill out the Parish Affiliation Form, and give it to Fr. Mike (or your parish priest if you are registered in another parish) for approval.  These forms are due back to the parish office by April 30th. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give Susan Steele a call.

Click here to download the Parish Affiliation Form.

School Advisory Council (SAC) Nominations

Are you interested in helping to shape the direction of our school? Then, we need you! The Madeleine School Advisory Council has three positions (3-year terms) that need to be filled. Download the nomination form here, and return it to the office by Friday, May 2nd.

St. Michael's Lunches: Kindergarten

Congratulations to the kindergarten for bringing in 251 beautifully labeled and decorated lunches this week.  The volunteers at St. Michael’s were quite impressed with our young artists and love the care and attention to detail in all the sack lunches.

I’ve included a photo of a great lunch a family packed this week.  It included a hearty whole sandwich, two cuties, one bar, a capri sun and a bag of chips.  That is the perfect size St Michael’s lunch.  It’s probably a bit bigger than a six year old can consume, but it’s ideal for the folks who dine at St Michael’s.  Thank you everyone for all your hard work.

Need Volunteer Hours? Help with North Parking Lot Gardening

Saturday, April 26th

This is a heads up that we will be gardening at the North Parking lot, April 26th from 8am – Noon. (We are not working on our usual 3rd Saturday since that is a four-day weekend and Easter weekend).  We would love to have you join us.  There are a variety of things that need to be done, from weeding and pruning to moving paths.  Come for a short time or come for the whole time… All and any help will be appreciated and counts toward your community hours. This is one of the last opportunities for volunteer hours to count for this school year!

Please bring the tools that you will need, such as shovels, yard brooms, wheel barrows, etc.

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better!
