A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The beginning of the school year is always so exciting. I hope your children are entertaining you with stories of their days here at The Madeleine.  Lots of attention to routines, rules, and procedures usually make the year go smoothly.  My granddaughter, Ceci, began Pre-K this week and it has been delightful listening to her explain why they have to walk in the hallway, take turns, be polite, etc. It is good to see this through the eyes of a child.

I am sure your eyes couldn’t miss the new paint on our school and parish buildings when you returned on Tuesday. Isn’t it beautiful! Though not quite finished, our library and art room have also had significant transformations. YDP moved its storage area so that the art room could expand. Both areas have new shelving, cabinetry, and paint. Part of last year’s Paddle Raise helped to fund the improvements. A big thank you to Kelly Johnson, our parish business manager, who among all her other responsibilities, brought all three projects to fruition. I really think our campus is one of the loveliest in Portland. We are truly blessed to worship, work, learn, and play in such a beautiful environment.

I have many items to update, remind, or inform you of so here we go…..

We want to have the school directory available to the community at next Thursday’s Back to School Night. Please review the draft copy here to see if your contact information is accurate. Please make it a priority to let the school office know if corrections need to be made. No need to call us if everything is correct. Just let us know if changes are necessary.

Hot lunch will begin next Thursday and there is an order form for the trimester attached to this newsletter and a hard copy should be in your child’s Friday Folder. If you wish to order, please fill out the form and return it ASAP so your child does not miss lunch next week. All children have been offered milk this week at lunch, but next week only those who ordered it will get it. It is not too late to order, though, if your child has changed his/her mind. Just let the office know and we will get an order form to you.

It appears that most of the logo polo shirts from Lands’ End have finally arrived. If you are still waiting, don’t worry. We will extend the uniform “deadline” to October. Madeleine sweatshirts and fleeces are available for purchase through the school office. We have inventory on hand, especially in smaller sizes. There will be another order placed in mid-October so watch for an order form in the Footnotes if you need a sweatshirt or fleece jacket/vest. Grades 5-8 wear a PE uniform and we also have those available through the school office.

Middle school Spanish begins next Monday, September 9th at 7:45. Students should come to the “gym” door, by the rose garden, which will open at 7:30. Spanish for our K-5 children, an independent program operated by Portland Early Learning Project, will begin on Tuesday, September 10th. Their flyer, with information on times and costs, should be in your child’s Friday Folder today.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Back To School Night on Thursday, September 12th. This is an evening to meet your child’s teacher and hear about highlights and activities for the year. You will also get information on volunteer opportunities and activities, especially our fabulous Auction, themed A Night To Remember. See you at 7:00 in the Parish Hall. Adults only, please.

Well, I think that is enough for one week. We are off and running for 2013-2014!

                                                           Sincerely,
                                                           Susan

Save the Date: The Madeleine 2013 Auction!

The beginning of the year also launches the countdown to our largest fundraiser, the annual auction. We’re pleased to announce that we will be taking the auction off site this year to Pure Space located in Portland’s Pearl District.  In the days and weeks ahead, you’ll receive communications with many additional details surrounding the event.• Read the announcement fromFather Mike and School Principal Susan Steele• Visit the Auction website here

School Families: The Auction Needs Your Donations!

We ask for 100% participation.

To make your FAMILY DONATION click here.

Please complete & submit the Donor Form ONLINE. For everything you ever wanted to know about making a donation to the auction, click here. Then, take your item or gift certificate to the Parent Workroom. Leave gift certificates or small items in the basket marked School Procurement: Melissa Lindsay & Penny Pettey and items too large for the basket can be left on the counter.

Please leave a note indicating your child's name and grade OR a copy of your donation confirmation email. Items will be checked in daily. If you're concerned about safety, contact Melissa Lindsay or Penny Pettey to make arrangements to meet in the Workroom so your item can be checked in immediately.

DONOR DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 1st, 2013.

An invoice for $250 will be sent on October 14 to those who have not fulfilled their Donation obligation. This ensures that we have time to collect the funds. This money will be used to round out Donor packages and make purchases as necessary on your behalf.

If you are really stumped on a donation of goods or services, we will gladly accept a cash donation of $200. Your gift will be used to round a package in the oral or silent auction.

Inaugural Annual Fund Updatetrain image.jpg

Did you know that tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating our students?  Each year we must make up the additional 25% through fundraising activities. To bridge this gap, The Madeleine Annual Fund Campaign was kicked off in spring 2013. The funds raised by the Annual Fund will be applied to both the Endowment and Tuition Assistance Funds in order to keep Catholic education affordable for all families.

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, current parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and parishioners, the Inaugural Annual Fund Campaign is off to a strong start.  We have raised $17,064 toward our $25,000 goal!  Stay tuned next week for class participation levels and special challenge announcements!

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by September 30, 2013, so there is still time if you have not yet had the opportunity to participate in the Annual Fund Campaign.  One hundred percent of your donation will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation, and 100% of your donation is tax deductible.

During the Annual Fund Campaign, we are asking everyone—families, alumni, parishioners, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends—to contribute. What is most important is your participation, not the amount you are able to give. Every level of support is valued and appreciated.

St. Michael's Lunches Begin Tuesday

8th Grade Kicks Off our School's Biggest Service Project

Throughout the year we ask all the students to participate in St. Michael the Archangel Church’s homeless lunch program. One class weekly will be designated to bring in bagged lunches, which we will then deliver to St. Michaels. However anyone who would like to participate may send an extra lunch along with their child. Suggestions for lunches would be a sandwich, soft treat, a healthy beverage, and soft piece of fruit. Sometimes a note is fun to include. The first class on the calendar is 8th Grade on Tuesday, September 10, Drop off lunches in the hallway on your way to class.

A huge thank you to our fantastic parent volunteer, Sarah Chartz. She delivers your generous donations each week to St. Michael's.
