A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

School is well underway with lots of activities on the horizon. If you wish to volunteer at school or in our parish, and children are present, you must complete the Archdiocesan Called To Protect program. The safety of our students is our highest priority, and so we follow and enforce the directives from the Pastoral Center. I have outlined the necessary steps for compliance below, but I know it can be a bit confusing at times. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to call the office. Background checks are good for three years and I will be emailing those parents/guardians who are approaching their expiration date. Thank you for all you do for our school community by volunteering your time and talent.

Sincerely,

Susan

Called To Protect

Volunteers

Help us to make “A Night to Remember” a night we’ll never forget by signing up to volunteer at this year’s auction!  Many families have offered to help for which we are grateful, but we still have a few areas that need more volunteers:

Best of the Best/Treasure Chest (Night of Auction)

Concierge/Host (Night of Auction)

Ad Hoc/Misc

Raffle Ticket Reconciliation

Business Procurement

Coat Check (Night of Auction)

Silent Auction (Night of Auction)

Volunteering is always tons of fun and provides a chance to both work alongside friends and get to know new families (and complete your volunteer requirement).

You may email Shannon Swartley at shannonlikestosew@yahoo.com or Colby Westhead at westheac@reed.edu your area of interest.  Of course we are certainly here to answer any questions about the volunteer process, and we are happy to steer you in the right direction.

Raffle Tickets

Raffle tickets are out there, so be sure to work on selling them!  Got more tickets than relatives?  Sign up in the hallway to sell tickets after Mass or at QFC.

Schoolwide Annual Fund Participation Rate
Hits 25% and $22,300!

Second grade leads the way!Yellow Star

Congratulations on earning another big, gold star for your participation in the Annual Fund Campaign.  The deadline is looming . . . can you help the school hit the $25,000 mark by next Friday? The second grade is in the lead with a 41% participation rate with the first grade hot on their heels at 39%.  Can your class become the leader by next week?  Can second grade hit 50%?

What is most important is your participation, not the amount you are able to give. Every level of support is valued and appreciated. Yellow Star

Click Here to Make a Donation to the Annual Fund

The funds raised by the Annual Fund will be applied to both the Endowment and Tuition Assistance Funds in order to keep Catholic education affordable for all Madeleine families.

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by September 30, 2013.  One hundred percent of your donation will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation, and 100% of your donation is tax deductible.

What’s Cool About Our School?Happy face

Our generous students!

Walk Your Wheels and Lock Your Bike

Whether you arrive at school on a bike, scooter or skateboard, please remember to “walk your wheels” as soon as you cross over from the sidewalk to the school property.  Also, we’ve noticed that there are a number of bikes on the bike rack not locked up. Bike thefts can and have happened right here at Madeleine, so please remember to lock your bike frame to the rack.

Book Sale!

Please help us find a good home for some well-loved book that have been “weeded” from the library.  Books will be sold under the middle school stairs before and after school on Tuesday through Friday of next week (Sept. 24-27) for a dollar per book. Come buy a book and help support your school library.

Thank you!

Mrs. Chambers

North Parking Lot Gardening:

This Saturday, Sept. 21st

The Care for Creation Committee is continuing the monthly mornings of gardening at the North parking lot.  A group of volunteers is working every 3rd Saturday of the month from 8am-noon, and we would love to have you join us. There are a variety of things that need to be done, from weeding and pruning to moving paths.  Come for a short time or come for the whole time.  All and any help will be appreciated and counts toward your community hours.

Please bring the tools that you will need, such as shovels, yard brooms, wheel barrows, etc.

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better.

Questions? Contact Sara Allen at seamagoo@hotmail.com.

Counselor's Corner

In order to support and improve the whole school community, the School Counselor will be a regular contributor to Friday Footnotes.  We are committed to collaborating with you, as primary educators of your children, to encourage their spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional growth.

Tech Club Seeks Parent Volunteers

Hello Madeleine Parents!  My name is Armando Luna, and I volunteer as the Tech Club advisor for the students that produce the Madeleine Morning News that is broadcast to the school Tuesday mornings at 8:35am. I've been doing this for the past 4 years and it's been extremely rewarding and fun! So much fun that I would like to extend an invitation for some assistance!

If you are interested in helping middle school students learn about producing a news broadcast, video production, webcasting or any other type of technology you have experience with or an interest in, please consider joining us!  We will be meeting Tuesday mornings from about 7:30am to 8:45am and Friday mornings from 7:30am to 8:20am.

Please feel free to contact me at infoluna@gmail.com if you have questions. You don't need any experience, but you will have to complete the "Call to Protect" training.  And remember, all are welcome!

St. Michael's Lunches

The 7th and 8th grades have us off to a fabulous start with the St. Michael’s Lunch program.  Last week, the 8th grade brought in 145 lunches. This week, the 7th grade brought in 153 lunches, including 113 meat sandwiches, which make the volunteers at St. Michael’s very happy.   Not bad numbers for the first hectic days of September!

Scrip Survey Results

Thank you to those that participated in the Scrip survey!  Lots of good ideas that will allow families to work it into their routine.  Here are a few we see as executable for now.  If you don't see your idea on the list, we have taken good notes and will look to incorporate other ideas down the road.

- Form link in Friday Footnotes with highlights around key vendors

- Simpler form to fill out (Click here to see the simplified form)

- Check/Cash only system

- Quick drop off/pick up system

- Physical forms in the Friday Folder (envelopes for the 6-8 grade students)

- Setting up a booth after Mass

- Monthly program through bank deposits

- Incentives for achieving over the minimum

Some of these will be quicker to roll out than others.  Please look for a "Scrip" section in the Friday footnotes for future updates.

Thanks again for all your insight and ideas!

Scrip Update

We heard you loud and clear!  Target has now been added to the Scrip vendor list.  Since they only offer 2% and Visa takes more than that, we are going to begin to phase out the use of credit cards and move to a check or cash only system.  Questions, concerns or comments?  Contact Jolynn Mitchell at jolynn.mitchell@gmail.com.

Bring Your Non-Perishable Food

for St. Vincent de Paul

You are invited to join us as we celebrate the life and mission of Saint Vincent de Paul on Thursday, September 26th, 2013, at the 2:00 PM School Mass.

In fellowship with this great and good servant of God, and to assist our local St. Vincent de Paul ministry, students are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items (no glass containers, please) to their classrooms from September 26th through October 16th  - World Food Day. Click here for a suggested list of food items.  Please help The Madeleine Community “respond to the call to serve others” as indicated in our Spiritual School Wide Learning Expectation.

Thank you!

St. Francis Pledge

Parishioners and school families are encouraged this weekend to take the St. Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor, sponsored by the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change.

The Pledge offers a concrete way to live out our faith by caring for God's Creation and the poor in response to the challenges of global climate change.

The Pledge asks us to PRAY and reflect on the duty to care for God's creation; LEARN about and educate others on the causes and moral dimensions of climate change; ASSESS how people contribute to climate change; ACT to change our choices and behaviors; and ADVOCATE for Catholic principles in climate change discussions and decisions.

For more information and to take the pledge, log on to www.CatholicClimateCovenant.org
