A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you have a nice, relaxing four day weekend planned. The staff will be on campus tomorrow working to set goals and activities for the coming year. Even though we still have 14 days left in this year, it is always exciting to plan for the coming year. It will be here before you know it.
Speaking of fourteen days……Mrs. Rosebrook is sending home the “summer packet” with more forms to fill out than should be allowed and I think you are going to need all the days to complete them! That is a slight exaggeration, but there is some truth to it. However, please have pity on Angela who has to sort and record all the information. Please, please, please, take some time and fill out the forms and return them as soon as possible. I don’t want Angela to be here until July processing. Let me offer an incentive. The first 20 people who put their completed packet in Angela’s hands will get a little gift card to Starbucks. Thanks so much for your prompt response.
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Susan

Apply Now for the Laskowski Family Tuition Assistance Scholarship
Deadline: Friday, May 23rd
In November of 2010, The Madeleine School’s live auction Paddle Raise inspired donors to give $40,000 in honor of Pat and Kathy Laskowski. The Laskowskis sent five children to The Madeleine School between 1996 and 2011 and are current members of The St. Mary Magdalene Parish. During their 15 years as Madeleine School parents they volunteered as coaches, Athletic Director, scrip sales, auction wait staff, church nursery, Little Church, and many other school and parish activities. In order to give their children a Catholic education they received financial aid, but more importantly they are role models of their faith by being active members in the Catholic Church.

Scrip Purchase Deadline Extended to June 1!
* * * Click Here for a Scrip Order Form* * *
If you haven't yet fulfilled your commitment to purchase $2,000 in Scrip, don't despair! The deadline to buy Scrip has been extended to June 1. If you are not purchasing Scrip this year, please drop off a check for $200 with Angela in the school office.
One way to meet your Scrip commitment is to stock up on Scrip for the summer. Think of all food you'll be buying at Fred Meyer and New Seasons for BBQs, picnics and camping trips. Home and garden projects can get a boost with scrip from Home Depot and Lowe's. And, of course, you'll need scrip from REI, Dick's, and Sports Authority to buy all the outdoor gear for your summer adventures.

Join the Bridge Program!
Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School
The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.
Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year. The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:
- New Parents Potluck in September (approx. two hours)
- Open House in February (approx. two hours)
- School Tours in February (approx. two hours)
If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.
St. Michael's Lunches: 3rd Grade
The third grade brought in 169 beautifully packaged lunches this week. The decorations were gorgeous and I’m sure they were very appreciated by our friends at St. Michael’s. Just a few more weeks to go, and then we are done with making lunches for this school year. Thank you to all the teachers, students and families who make this volunteer project so enjoyable. The Madeleine rocks!
St. Michael's Lunch Coordinators Honored at the Ageless Award Luncheon
You know you make lunches for St. Michael's when it's your turn. You might know that Sarah Chartz and Louise Hallman count the lunches and drive them downtown. But, do you know what happens after that point?
Two unsung heroes, Irvan and Pat Guss, are the amazing people who coordinate the St. Michael's program. They were recently honored for their tremendous efforts at the second annual Ageless Award Luncheon for the Jessie F. Richardson Foundation (JFRF), which creates and disseminates proven, sustainable, and replicable models to improve the lives of vulnerable older adults, particularly in developing areas.
Irvan and Pat are truly exemplary and humble people who have given many inspiration. Thank you to them for all of their hard work that helps so many in need!
6th Grade Goes to the Olympics (Sort of)
On Monday May 19th, the 6th graders enjoyed a beautiful, sunny afternoon on the Field of Dreams competing in six Olympic events including javelin, running in armor, wrestling, jumping, horse racing, and chariot racing.
While learning about ancient Greece, the students studied the ancient Olympic Games, the Paralympics, and the Special Olympics. In preparation for the afternoon's activities, they conducted in-depth research on their individual city-state and Olympic event. The teams competed and operated the events and showed great team spirit throughout the day.
After an Olympic prayer, Mary Kate H. and Ian H. kicked off the Olympics as torch runners. They were nominated by the class for exhibiting the Olympic qualities of excellence, friendship, and respect. Congratulations to Team Megara for placing first in three events and winning the gold!
Counselor Corner
Dear Parents: Has homework has become a struggle in your home? Has your child's disorganization become concerning? Would you like some strategies to help?
There is an upcoming 2-hour, hands-on lecture at Providence Portland that may offer that help. Marydee Sklar, who works with both individuals and families, will be presenting. She has presented to our faculty and many St. Clare families have used her services. The workshop is free (donations only).

St. Vincent de Paul, doing God’s work in our community
Second collection next weekend, June 1
ED. NOTE: Next weekend, we will hold our semi-annnual collection for The Madeleine
Conference of St. Vincent de Paul. The selfless volunteers here make up one
of our parish’s most important and active ministries, reaching out to and helping
all in need—without question or judgement. In the pews this weekend and next,
you will find donation envelopes. Please be generous.
In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments...Whoever
loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to
him.” We manifest our love for the Father by loving those whom we serve.
The vocation of the the members of the Madeleine Conference of St.
Vincent de Paul, is to serve those in need in witness to Christ’s compassion and love
through charitable works that promote human dignity and personal integrity.
SVDP serves those in need regardless of creed, ethnic or social background,
health, gender or political opinions.
The Madeleine Conference has not only provided food assistance, our most visible
and well-known activity, but also rent assistance, utility assistance, transportation,
moving assistance, learning assistance, locating and providing firewood for
heating, and, in one instance, plumbing assistance. Vincentians also visit
shut-ins, and those in hospitals and nursing homes. In April alone, your gifts
brought the love and care of Jesus by assisting 14 people, providing 193 pounds
in food, $1,069.14 in utility payments, and $100 in rent.
Our only source of funding is donations from parishioners and from our volunteers.
May crowning Sunday at 10:00 Mass
The Catholic Church has, as a part of its tradition, the special devotion
to the Blessed Mother of Jesus. Mary is recognized as “one of us,” a human
person, and a model of faith and discipleship for all Christians to imitate.
When Jesus, from the cross, entrusted the Apostle, St. John, with the care
of His mother, Catholics believe that Mary became our mother as well. Catholics
do not worship Mary or consider her to be a goddess. Catholics recognize that
mothers can have great influence over their children, and as such, we pray
to Mary to intercede with her Son on our behalf. During the month of May it
is a tradition in the church to honor Mary, our mother, in a special way, by
placing crowns of spring blossoms on the head of a statue that depicts her
image. This is a beautiful ceremony wherein the participants give thanks to
Mary for bringing Jesus into the world, and pray for her guidance along the
path that will lead to her Son.
We ask parishioners to bring in flowers to place at the feet of Mary at the
beginning of Mass.
Send us your 2014 high school graduates!
www.themadeleine.edu/graduates
We want to recognize all of The Madeleine’s Class of 2014 high school graduates in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!
So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.
We need to receive your Graduates’ names by June 14 so we may list them in our June 21 bulletin.
Children’s Choir seeking members
The next time the Children’s Choir will sing at Mass will be Sunday, June 1st at 10 am. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:10 PM in the school commons music room (enter through rose garden double doors). Anyone interested can just come to rehearsal or email me: bmoore@themadeleine.edu.
Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
Contributing to the Footnotes
If you have information to contribute to the Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
