A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had a beautiful all school Seder Meal on Monday. A big thank you to Mrs. Grimaldi for organizing the meal and to our wonderful 8th grade leaders who assisted in the service.

May the peace of the Risen Lord be with you in the coming year.

Sincerely,
Susan Steele

Bring in Your Rice Bowl!

Due Friday, April 25th

Catholic Relief Services’ 2014 CRS Rice Bowl campaign is coming to an end.  To all who participated in this Lenten program, thank you.  Our donations provide essential assistance to those in need – internationally and locally.

Seventy-five percent of Rice Bowl proceeds are used to fund development projects designed to increase food security in communities in over 100 countries.  Twenty-five percent of the total donations we receive remain in our Archdiocese, providing funding for critically-needed food assistance for local programs such as Holy Family Church, which provides food-filled backpacks for school children and St. Andre Bessette Church, which provides food for the homeless.

Please bring in your rice bowl contributions by Friday, April 25 so that we can forward the funds to Catholic Relief Services.

Parish Affiliation Form

Due Wednesday, April 30th

Families who are registered and active in a parish may request a subsidy to lower their tuition rate. We are so blessed to be a part of a parish that financially supports a Catholic school. We have operated for over 100 years as an active ministry of The Madeleine Church. All of the Madeleine parishioners are stakeholders in this school community. Their generosity has helped us build an excellent educational program, nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of all students.

If you would like to request the “in-parish” rate, you need to fill out the Parish Affiliation Form, and give it to Fr. Mike (or your parish priest if you are registered in another parish) for approval.  These forms are due back to the parish office by April 30th. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give Susan Steele a call.

Click here to download the Parish Affiliation Form.

Are you interested in helping to shape the direction of our school? Then, we need you! The Madeleine School Advisory Council has three positions (3-year terms) that need to be filled. Download the nomination form here, and return it to the office by Friday, May 2nd.

Need Volunteer Hours? Help with North Parking Lot Gardening

Saturday, April 26th

This is a heads up that we will be gardening at the North Parking lot, April 26th from 8am – Noon. (We are not working on our usual 3rd Saturday since that is a four-day weekend and Easter weekend).  We would love to have you join us.  There are a variety of things that need to be done, from weeding and pruning to moving paths.  Come for a short time or come for the whole time… All and any help will be appreciated and counts toward your community hours. This is one of the last opportunities for volunteer hours to count for this school year!

Please bring the tools that you will need, such as shovels, yard brooms, wheel barrows, etc.

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better!

Questions? Contact Sara Allen at seamagoo@hotmail.com.

Madeleine Art Show

Thursday, May 8th @ 6pm

Save the Date!  The Madeleine Art Show is less than three weeks away.  Thursday, May 8th the Atrium will be transformed into a gallery featuring over 1,000 pieces of student art.  Your kids have been creating all year, and now is your chance to see the results.

You can help make it happen.  It's a huge job getting all that art displayed.  Thank you to the families who signed up to help at Back-To-School Night (you'll get a reminder soon) but you can still join the fun even if you didn't sign up then.  Starting immediately, packets of art need to be mounted on black paper for display.  This can be done at school or at home.  Monday, May 5th is the big set up day and Friday, May 9th is the day to take down the art and put it into student portfolios to go home.

It's going to be great!

St. Michael's Lunches: 8th Grade

The 8th grade did a fabulous job bringing in 192 hearty, healthy lunches this week.  Congratulations to a class who has been dedicated to this service for nine years, you raised the bar with your last St Michael’s lunch assignment. We are so grateful to the parents and students who faithfully continue to serve people in need, year after year. Thank you for all you do.

Phones for Flowers: Amazing Results!

Thank you so much to everyone who prepared for, organized and volunteered on Sunday at the Care for Creation Committee's annual "Phones for Flowers" Electronic Waste Recycling Event.

IT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Record-setting volumes of toxic waste (printers, monitors, etc.) recycled and diverted from landfills: The guys from Total Reclaim Recycling estimated that the event's overall volume of recyclables DOUBLED from 2013 -- and remember that in 2013, we doubled our 2012 volumes.

Crazy huge bags of styrofoam to be recycled: Total Reclaim melts that stuff down and recycles it on-site here in Portland.

Old sneakers given a new life: four boxes and bags of smelly sneakers will be given a new lease on life by Nike's awesome sneaker recycling program.

Really heavy boxes of batteries: thanks to all of you who braved the battery acid and fearlessly sorted hundreds of batteries to be recycled.

Widespread community participation: this was a big event! Our friends at Alameda Elementary helped us get the word out, and along with Committee members, we canvassed those flyers all over the place. Lots of people showed up to participate and donate. Many expressed their appreciation for this event.

A huge shout out to John Robinson who was the mastermind and chief operator of this event! Thank you, John, for everything!!

Some of you commented that the volume of electronic waste was humbling. Thank you EVERYONE for helping to make a difference and Caring for Creation!

6th Graders Enjoy Outdoor School

The 6th grade students enjoyed a sunny week at Camp Howard Outdoor School with students from All Saints, Archbishop Howard, and the Multisensory Learning Academy.  Throughout the week, students learned about water, wildlife, plants, and soil in a hands-on environment from high school volunteers. The week ended with an afternoon of cabin unity field games.

Special congratulations to Jayden W. for earning the honor of representing The Madeleine in the final tree planting ceremony, and to Sara H. and Ethan T. for their participation in the final flag ceremony.  Thank you to all volunteers who supported fundraising for this incredible week.

Show your Madeleine pride!

“M” static cling window decals for sale in the scrip office for $5.  Cash or check only please since it needs to be a separate transaction from scrip.  Funds raised will go toward the school’s area of greatest need.
