A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

You might think that when you get to “empty nest” status, as my husband and I are, a three-day weekend (four days for you) consists of sleeping in, beach getaways, quiet dinners, and lots of unscheduled time. Well, think again. As your children leave home, marry, and have their own children, you are expected to be at everyone’s events….and I wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s why I will be attending my granddaughter’s school auction on Saturday, my grandson’s first birthday party on Sunday, and checking out a rehearsal dinner venue for our engaged son on Monday. So much for free time….

Tuesday is a work day for the faculty and we will be at St. Pius for an inservice on implementing the Common Core State Standards, specifically on close reading of informational text. There has been some controversy about these standards that have been adopted by at least 45 states, including Oregon. Since we are a parochial school, we are not bound by these standards, but our Archdiocese believes that we need to be cognizant of what they are and how they can improve our instruction. Right now we are studying two of the ten anchor standards in English Language Arts that focus on reading and comprehending complex literary and informational text, citing specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions and making logical inferences. I know I could be accused of being biased when I say that I believe our teachers do a great job of teaching English, but we also know that we are a community of learners and there is always something we can do to become better at our craft. I am sure that Tuesday’s inservice will be productive.

Enjoy your four-day weekend, probably filled with basketball games, birthday parties, sleep-overs, and family get-aways.

Sincerely,

Susan

What's Cool About Our School: Bird Rescues!

The kindergartners had an unexpected opportunity during their art class Tuesday.  Mrs. Galash noticed a hummingbird at the feeder that was not looking well.  Leaving Ms. Salvitelli in charge, Mrs. Galash went outside and scooped the tiny bird up in a paint shirt.  Ms.Yuhas loaned a critter cage. Mrs. Rosebrook and Mrs. Galash spent the lunch period feeding her sugar water with an eye dropper, and she even drank from the crease in Mrs. G's hand.

The sweet little female Anna's hummingbird is now being tended by the staff at the Audubon Care Center. The kindergartners just might have a hummingbird project in their future.

North Parking Lot Gardening Starts in March

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better!  Questions?  Contact Sara Allen at seamagoo@hotmail.com.

St. Michael's Lunches: 6th Grade

The 6th grade did an outstanding job bringing in 155 sack lunches this week.  The snow, freezing rain and Monday snow-day did not detour the class from packing big, nutritious lunches.  A big shout out to the Hughes family for making and delivering nine gallons of hearty, healthy beef stew to our friends who dine at St Michael’s.  What a delicious treat for a wet week!
