A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you are looking forward to a wonderful Spring Break. Whether you are traveling or having a Portland “staycation,” please do your best to rest and relax during the coming week. The last trimester will surely keep us busy.

They say that the only thing constant in life is change, and we will be experiencing that in the coming year. A few of our teachers are making some career changes, and while I know that it will be a challenge to fill their shoes, we wish them all the best. Mrs. Grimaldi will be retiring from teaching and starting a new career in the business world with her husband, Hugo. Jeanette was my music teacher and librarian at my previous school, so we have been together for many years. We have shared many stories about our children as they have grown – from grade school to high school to college to career. It has been a blessing to have her as part of my professional and personal life.

Ms. Bourke is also making a change, but not leaving us completely. She wants to write a “young adults” novel and needs solid time blocks to do that—not following a day of teaching 7th graders.  I know she will be on the best seller list and we can say we knew her when…. She has also agreed to take on a project that I have wanted to start for many years—a gifted and talented program. Allyson will be working two afternoons a week with students who qualify for the program from grades 5 through 8. Details to follow. Parents can also contact her if they are looking for an outside tutor. Finally, she will be offering a summer writing program, beginning this summer, to our students and neighboring Catholic school students. Between all these activities and riding her horse, I hope she gets that novel written.

Mr. Parker has asked to take over the 7th grade home room position. He will be teaching the same math and social studies classes, but will teach 7th grade religion. He has done a great job with the unique responsibilities of being the 8th grade teacher, such as guiding our students in the high school application process and sending them forth with wonderful graduation memories. He has promised to pass on the legacy to the new 8th grade teacher.

There will be a few more changes in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

Have a great Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Susan Steele

Other items being collected include razors, socks and ibuprofen. All items can be placed in the bins near the school entrance after Spring Break.

You can also donate these items at this weekend's Masses. Just look for the bins at the back of the church.

St. Michael's Lunches: 2nd Grade

Congratulations to the second grade for bringing in 240 well made lunches this week.  The volunteers at St. Michael’s are especially grateful for the quantity of lunches and the generosity of our eighth graders who sort the sack lunches each week.  With their staff short handed, our helping hands are greatly appreciated.  Thank you students for all you do!

6th Graders Staying Busy!

The 6th grade students attended the Vocation Rally at St. Pius X on Thursday, March 20th. They had a wonderful time learning about the different vocations and hearing from inspirational speakers. The students learned about dedicating their life to God through becoming a priest, nun, sister, and brother. Thank you to all the parent drivers and to Deacon Tim for spending the day with us!

Eight students from the 6th grade classroom applied for We Day tickets to this year's concert in Seattle, Washington. We Day is put on by Free the Children, which is an organization started by two brothers when they were twelve years old. Free the Children empowers children from all over the world to join together to help those in need. This opportunity was open to all middle school students. In order to attend, students were asked to submit a two paragraph essay stating how they help others through service to local and global communities. Famous singers, such as Cody Simpson, motivational speakers, and Seattle Seahawk players will be at this year's Seattle We Day. Congratulations to Emma O., Sophia G., Julia S., Ada S., Mary Kate H., Bailey B., and Amelia L.!

Do you know....?

It is already two-thirds of the way through the school year, and volunteer hours need to be completed AND logged by May 15th.  Fortunately, there are a number of opportunities left before then to earn your hours.

If you need to know what hours you have recorded already, please see the spreadsheet of volunteer hours logged.  One can be found in the Parent Workroom, next to the boys' restroom on the first floor; the other is kept in the school office with Mrs. Rosebrook.

Where do you log your hours?  Right here!

Questions? Contact Lisa Luna.

Adult confirmation classes set

We have had quite a response to our Adult Confirmation Class announcements. We have 11 adults who have signed up, but there’s always room for more!

Did you miss confirmation as a teenager? Then the time was never “just right.” Did you get asked to be a Godparent, only to find out that Godparents need to have received the Sacrament of Confirmation?  Well, we’re here to make receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

We have set our Adult Confirmation Class schedule as follows:

All three classes will take place in the rectory dining room from 9:15-9:55am.

Please contact Tina Hanselman if you would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation, at thanselman@themadeleine.edu. You must have been baptized and received First Holy Communion.

Leadership Night—Save the date

Thursday, April 3 • Parish Hall

All committee, council, commission and ministry leads, chairpersons are requested to attend our quarterly Parish Leadership Night, Thursday, April 3 at 6:30 pm. As we missed our Winter meeting due to weather, we hope you can make a special effort to attend this meeting.

Topics to be covered will include the 2014-2015 Parish budget, our 5-Year Plan, and the Church’s Year of Evangelization. This is an important time to get to know other leaders in our parish and to learn how your group can help further our mission. Please join us!
