A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have two active surveys going on right now, hoping for responses from our parent community. I thought I would give you an update on the hot lunch survey and a final request to add your thoughts to both, hot lunch and parent education workshops.

The majority of the respondents would purchase hot lunch 2 or 3 days per week. Five percent would never participate and ten percent would purchase every day. Ninety percent would agree to pay monthly in advance. There was almost an even split on whether the price should go higher than the current $3.50. Ninety percent answered that a healthy/organic main course was important or very important, but only 14% felt that a vegetarian option was necessary for their child to participate. An “add-on” salad bar to a home packed lunch appealed to only 34%. Dessert and chips, as part of the daily lunch offering, was not a big favorite with parents. (I wonder what the kids would say if we surveyed them?) And, finally, about 55 parents said they could volunteer once a month, with a few brave souls answering once a week.

A sub-committee will take this data and explore how our hot lunch offerings may change next year. If you would like to weigh in, in addition to the survey, I would be happy to forward your comments to the group.

Here are the links to both surveys. They will remain open until next Friday, May 23rd.

For more information contact Lynn Robinson at 503-288-9197 or lrobinson@themadeleine.edu.

Parent Education Survey

One of the Target Goals of the 5 Year Plan, developed by the School Advisory Council, is to ensure The Madeleine School offers an ongoing, relevant educational program to enrich and expand parental comprehension pertaining to understanding the development of the whole child.

The Parent Club has taken on the responsibility of finding out what topics are of interest to our parent community as we move forward with this goal. Building on the success of past meeting topics such as adolescent brain development, social media, and developing responsibility in children, we would like to ask you to take a quick survey on topics to be considered for the future.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DH8JKBX  to take the survey.

Hot Lunch Survey

Last November, at our Auction, we had a "paddle raise" to fund improvements to our kitchen. Those upgrades are being reviewed by our business manager and the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the work should be completed this summer.

With those improvements comes the option of offering a hot lunch program to our students. We need to hear from our parent community to see if there is enough interest to support this program. We have put a very short preliminary survey together to see if we should pursue having a hot lunch program.

Please go to the link below and answer the questions. Please respond how your child would participate in such a program. For example, everyone may think that a hot lunch program would be a great asset to our school, but if only 10% of the children ordered, it would not be economically feasible. So please respond based on your family's actual participation.

Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/93SJDY2 to take the survey.

The kitchen remodel will happen whether we offer hot lunch or not. We still use the kitchen many times during the year and will enjoy the upgrade.

Gardening This Saturday
at the North Parking Lot

Saturday, May 17th

First and foremost, I wanted to send out a huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers who have been working at the gardens this year. A lot more people have been coming to our monthly clean-ups and the area is looking great! Several families have brought their students too, which is great to see.

Secondly, we are looking for some donations for the gardens. We would like to have some sections of tree trunks to use as nurse logs. If you are removing a tree or have access to this type of debris, please contact me. We are also considering the use of some medium-sized boulders.

This Saturday is our monthly work day, and we would love to have you join us. Wood Waste Management will be dropping off five yards of mulch, so we could use your help scooping, hauling and spreading.  I will be there from 8-noon. Come for a short time or come for the whole time.  Any and all help will be appreciated and counts toward your community hours.

Please bring the tools that you will need, such as shovels, yard brooms, wheel barrows, etc.

Thanks for volunteering to help make our grounds better.

Apply Now for the Laskowski Family Tuition Assistance Scholarship

Deadline: Friday, May 23rd

In November of 2010, The Madeleine School’s live auction Paddle Raise inspired donors to give $40,000 in honor of Pat and Kathy Laskowski. The Laskowskis sent five children to The Madeleine School between 1996 and 2011 and are current members of The St. Mary Magdalene Parish. During their 15 years as Madeleine School parents they volunteered as coaches, Athletic Director, scrip sales, auction wait staff, church nursery, Little Church, and many other school and parish activities.  In order to give their children a Catholic education they received financial aid, but more importantly they are role models of their faith by being active members in the Catholic Church.

Join the Bridge Program!

Help Welcome New Families to Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year.  The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.  In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

Book Fair Update

Thanks to everyone who shopped this Spring's Book Fair.  With our sales, we have earned over $2,600 that the school will spend on more books for the library and classrooms!  Thank you also to all the volunteers that help make this event happen.

In addition, we raised $208 to buy books for Portland Children's Book Bank.  That number is also matched by Scholastic to buy books for kids in need.

Mrs. Chambers is busy getting the kids logged on to the Summer Reading program.  Last summer our school came in second in the state for reading minutes, behind Holy Cross.  Lets see if we can take top honors this summer! Reading minutes can be logged now.  More information to come...

Talent Show 2014!

Talent show last year was a hit, and our 2nd Annual Talent show is just around the corner!  All participants need to remember to attend rehearsal next week.

Counselor Corner

Dear Parents:  Has homework has become a struggle in your home? Has your child's disorganization become concerning? Would you like some strategies to help?

There is an upcoming 2-hour, hands-on lecture at Providence Portland that may offer that help.  Marydee Sklar, who works with both individuals and families, will be presenting.  She has presented to our faculty and many St. Clare families have used her services.  The workshop is free (donations only).

Click here for the flyer with complete details.

Are you helping Madeleine earn free money?

We just received our first report from Fred Meyer and the school will be receiving a check for $602.50 for the period between 2/01/14 and 3/31/14! Currently only 34 families are registered. If every school family registered, we would generate $19,367 per year for the school!

Register your Fred Meyer Rewards card today!

Here’s how the program works:

St. Michael's Lunches: 4th Grade

A big thank you to the fourth grade for bringing in 183 lunches this week.  Even on a warm Tuesday morning, there were a number of men lined up, waiting for the the doors to open and receive their soup and sack lunch. Regardless of the season, many hungry people living in Portland appreciate our assistance.

A farewell letter from Deacon Tim

"Words are a difficult thing to craft. In some ways I think of writing like I think of painting. Each word, each phrase must be carefully contemplated and placed like an array of colors on a canvas. The end result can move the heart or enlighten the mind, but even the most adept writer must acquiesce to the inevitable flaw of committing ink to paper - the lack of personhood. I begin this letter with that thought because it is of the utmost importance to me that you understand the impact this community has made on my life cannot be communicated in my writing's content. In my formation as a man on the road to priesthood the question I've found myself asking time and time again is: “What makes a good priest?” After my brief time at the Madeleine I have concluded that it is a good community that makes a good priest. Our Lord made us, artfully designed us to come into alignment with His very life by fully living in communion with the people He has given us to love. I have felt that communion with all of you and so I have seen yet another glimpse of the face of the One that cares for us the most. Over the past year our words have blended together in conversation, in worship, in prayer and in doing so our lives have followed suit. They have combined to make something beautiful for Our Father, a painted scape of life, love and hope. In the end I suppose I am thankful there are no words to describe that, only beauty to be beheld." – Dcn. Timothy Furlow

Send us your 2014 high school graduates!

www.themadeleine.edu/graduates

We want to recognize all of The Madeleine’s Class of 2014 high school graduates in our bulletin this June. Whether she or he went to our parish school or not...we want to recognize each and every one!

So, please go to www.themadeleine.edu/graduates and fill out the form with your graduate’s name and school. We’ve tried to list most of the schools in the area that our kids are likely to go to, but if we missed one, just enter it in the “other” field.

We need to receive your Graduates’ names by June 14 so we may list them in our June 21 bulletin.

Children’s Choir seeking members

The next time the Children’s Choir will sing at Mass will be Sunday, June 1st at 10 am. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:10 PM in the school commons music room (enter through rose garden double doors). Anyone interested can just come to rehearsal or email me: bmoore@themadeleine.edu.
