A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you to the many parents who returned their ’14-’15 re-registration form this week. It really makes Mrs. Rosebrook’s life easier to have this information early….rather than the day before Open House! We are getting calls for openings and we need accurate information to build our enrollment rosters. So, once again, thank you for returning the form. Please note that the book and materials fee is not due until January 31st, so the form can be returned without the check. The fee does increase after February 1st.

We had a great audience for Wednesday night’s speaker, Dr. Kathy Masarie. I know how hard it is to go back out after a long day of work. However, I think those parents who did attend felt it was definitely worth it. Many thanks to Lennie Supnet for contacting Dr. Masarie and arranging the evening on behalf of the Parents Club and School Advisory Council. One of the goals of the new 5-year plan, is to develop a parent education program. Be watching for a survey from the SAC to gather significant topics from our parent population. We want the speakers we invite to be of interest and relevant to our families needs and concerns.

Catholic Schools Week is coming up in about a week. Look for an agenda in next week’s Footnotes. I need a volunteer who likes to shop to help me out with one activity. If you need about 2 or 3 volunteer hours, give me a call.

Enjoy your three day weekend.

                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                                  Susan

Pennies for the Poor

During Catholic Schools week (January 27-31) The Madeleine School is participating in “Pennies for the Poor” fundraiser. Each class will have a milk jug to fill with change, pennies and paper are positive and silver change is a negative point for your class, so place your coins strategically! All of the money raised will go to St. Andre Bassette homeless ministry, formerly known as the Downtown Chapel. Look for the jugs outside the office during Catholic Schools week, and start collecting your pennies!

Earn Money for Madeleine: Register Your Fred Meyer Rewards Card in the Community Rewards Program!

The Madeleine School is now a participating organization in the new Fred Meyer Community Rewards Program.  You can help The Madeleine School earn donations just by shopping with your Fred Meyer Rewards Card!

Fred Meyer is donating $2.5 million per year to non-profits in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, based on where their customers tell them to give. Here’s how the program works:

Tracking Volunteer Hours Is Easier Than Ever!

Check out the new online system for tracking your volunteer hours at school.  Click here to log your volunteer hours on the new online form.  Surprisingly, fewer than half of the families at Madeleine have logged their precious volunteer hours into the brand new online form.  We know that you don't want to be charged for those hours at the end of the year, so take a few minutes this weekend to enter what you've done so far.  Think auction, field trips, and party planning for your class.  You'll be surprised at how many volunteer hours you've already completed when you start adding it up.

Don't Forget: 3rd Grade Auction Meeting

Thursday, January 23 @ 6:30pm in the Library

It's time for the annual, mandatory 3rd grade auction meeting. We'll share the results of the most recent auction along with some tasty snacks while we all discuss the who, what, when of the 2014 auction.

St. Michael's Lunches: 1st Grade

The first grade brought in 288 beautiful, well marked sack lunches this week.  We are so impressed with the commitment the Madeleine families have made to the men and women who dine at St. Michael’s.  All the extra touches, notes, drawings, homemade cookies and delicious sandwiches make a world of difference to those in need.  Thank you first graders and all our classes for bringing your best to this program; you make many people smile!

What’s Cool About Our School

Barely into the start of the second trimester of school, Madeleine has reached an amazing milestone.  Students and their families have made and donated over 3,400 lunches to St. Michael’s.  Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Madeleine “Mathletes” Excel at Math Fest

Last weekend, more than 150 students from 10 different schools gathered at Central Catholic High School to compete in the 14th annual Math Fest. Two “mathletes” from each school were paired with two students from another school, and put their agile brains to work in five group problem-solving events.  Two teams including Henry Kayser, Ian Kelleher, Dean Santos and David Sullivan won 3 of the 5 team events!

In addition, Dean Santos was the first place winner of the highest individual award, given to the student with the highest score on the exam known as the “conTEST.”

Participants from The Madeleine School this year included 7th Graders Brigid Hanley, Isabelle Kemp, Kate Thompson and Ben Robinson; and 8th Graders Henry Kayser, Ian Kelleher, Dean Santos and David Sullivan.  Congratulations to all The Madeleine School students who were chosen to participate.

The tables are being set, the bread is warming, the wine is waiting to be opened, and the keg is ready to be tapped. The only thing missing is you!

Mark your calendar and join us at The Annual Madeleine Spaghetti Dinner!

Where: Parish Hall

When: Saturday, February 8th from 5 pm – 9 pm

Safety Reminders

Do you drive to Madeleine in the afternoon to pick up your kids?  If so, this safety spot is for you!  As you know, we have two parking lots.  The southern parking lot (the one alongside the playground) is for parents who are simply driving through to pick up.  The northern lot (the one alongside the field) is for parents who are parking and walking in to pick up.

Recently, there have been traffic jams caused by those lining up to drive through and pick up from the southern parking lot when the line gets so long that it backs into the street and blocks others from pulling into the northern parking lot.

Effective immediately, if you are hoping to pull into the southern parking lot and the line of cars extends past the sidewalk, please proceed to the northern parking lot or around the block.  We ask that you only pull into the southern parking lot if there is actually room for your car.

Thank you for keeping all of our kids safe!

What’s For Hot Lunch?

Want to know what is being served for hot lunch this week?  All you need to do is look at the upper right-hand corner of Friday Footnotes in the “This Week” section and you’ll immediately have your answer!

Please Claim Your Bike!

A red, yellow, and black bike with the word "Navaro" printed on it has been chained to the bike rack since before Christmas vacation.  If this bike belongs to you, please claim it ASAP!  The bike will be donated at the end of next week.

Lost and Found

Please take a few minutes to look through the lost and found bin, which is located under the stairs leading up to the gym.  All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of next week.
