A Note From Susan

In case you are wondering why we had an 11:30 dismissal today….It is the end of the first trimester of school. Teachers will be working on report cards, which will be distributed next Friday. Standardized testing scores for grades 3-8 will also be going home on that day. There will be a cover letter to explain your child’s scores, but if you have any questions, be sure and talk to your child’s teacher or to me.

Next Thursday is our annual Madeleine Marketplace and Christmas Tree Lighting.  (Wait, wasn’t Thanksgiving just last week??) Vendors will be set up in the Parish Hall to help you with your Christmas shopping. Dinner will also be available. Tables open at 2:00, so do a little shopping before you pick up your child.

On a less festive, holiday note...The Department of Catholic Schools and the Portland Police Department have alerted us to be vigilant regarding theft of laptops and iPads. It appears there is a young man who shows up at schools during dismissal times and blends in to the parent crowd. He has been able to walk in to classrooms and take laptops and tablets without detection. A few surveillance cameras have been able to get a fleeting picture, so click here to see if you can help the police locate this individual. And as always, if you are on campus and feel uncomfortable with the presence of someone, please don’t hesitate to ask if you can help the stranger or come to the office so that we can investigate the situation. Your children’s safety is the “bottom line” here and of highest priority.

Sincerely,
Susan

6th Grade Fundraiser at Madeleine Marketplace

Please stop by and support the 6th grade class at the Madeleine Marketplace bazaar on Thursday December 6th! There will be an assortment of delicious baked items and craft items all hand made by the students and parents of the 6th grade. This is a fundraiser to help off set the cost of sending our kids to outdoor school this spring. Hope to see you there and thank you!

A Tasty Treat for the Playground

Thanks to the generous support of our Madeleine community, we are very close to creating a more inclusive playground for our students and neighborhood. All that is missing now is a solid rubber surface that will allow children who use walkers and wheelchairs to safely play with their friends.

To help get us closer to our goal, neighborhood ice cream shop, What’s the Scoop?, will donate 50% of sales for five creative flavors – including “Playground Peppermint Bark” -- to the Playground for All Players project. To place an order, download the order form, choose your flavors or gift certificate, and return the form to the office with a check payable to The Madeleine School by Dec. 14. You can pick up your ice cream or use the gift certificates at What’s the Scoop? between Jan. 7 – 20.

The Madeleine School Christmas Program

Please join us at The Madeleine Christmas program which will take place on Tuesday, December 18th at 7 pm in The Madeleine Parish Church.

Kindergarten through 4th grade students will charm us with song, dance, and instruments. We will also have a chance to hear music from our very own MUSE Band. Finally, the 5th grade students will tell us more about the Christmas story through an exciting musical called “The Star.”

The Christmas program is a long-standing tradition at The Madeleine School, and the students have been working hard to present this very special gift to you.

Counselor's Column

Look for Mrs. Ullman's weekly articles on topics that will help The Madeleine community support each other as we work together for the growth and development of our students. This week's topic: "What About Consequences?"

Thank You to the Schneider and Newman Families

Thanks to a generous gift from the Schneider and Newman families, the 2nd grade classroom now has an Apple TV that Mrs. Witka will be able to use for wirelessly streaming content from her iPad for presentations and lessons.

6th Grade Delivers 199 St. Michael's Lunches

The 6th grade did an outstanding job bringing in 199 lunches today! That generous donation will feed many men, women and children for the next two days. Today, a parent packed lunches in gallon size ziplock freezer bags. The volunteers thought it was a great way for the guests of St. Michael’s to see what each lunch contains before they choose it. In the future, feel free to pack lunches in these convenient freezer bags. Please remember that now is the time to donate any warm socks, scarves or hats to the guests of St. Michael’s. It’s cold and windy this week and a little extra warmth would be greatly appreciated.
