A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

There are two notices in today’s Footnotes from our uniform companies, Dennis Uniform and Lands’ End. I thought this would be a good time to review a few changes to the uniform policy that will take place next year.

Last year we introduced polos with our school logo from Lands’ End. Three of our neighboring schools (All Saints, Archbishop Howard, and Holy Redeemer) already were using them and reported that they had an excellent product, were a bit more expensive, laundered well, and offered many sales that made the items competitively priced.  This year was a transition year, so that the new shirts were available, but students could wear polos that they already owned. Next September 2013 all polo shirts must be purchased through Lands’ End and have our school logo. Now here is the confusing part…..If the polo shirt is worn under a jumper or sweater or sweatshirt or fleece, students may wear a polo that does not have the logo, because you can’t see it anyway. I know that may seem like a contradiction, but no one is going to be checking under sweaters, fleeces, etc. to see if there is a logo or not. So students may continue to wear their old polos if they are under another layer of clothing.

Middle school students may add a red sweater to their wardrobe as long as it follows the same guidelines as blue sweaters. Now a word about sweaters… The Student Handbook says that sweaters are supposed to be from Dennis Uniform. They make a product that wears like iron and is easy to launder. However, we are not checking labels, so if the sweater looks like a Dennis one, no problem. Lands’ End also has a number of sweaters that mirror Dennis’ style. What is not acceptable are sweaters with hoods, open weave, knee length (that you would wear with leggings), trimmed with lace, etc. etc. etc. Please be sure your child is wearing a style that conforms to the Dennis or Lands’ End items.

Socks seem to be making a major statement in the fashion world this year. But please save those socks for free dress days. Our policy states (and this is not a change) that socks should be solid colored in red, white, black, or blue.  You can find the policy and guidelines in the Student Handbook.

I will try to forward any notices of sales and promotions from Dennis and Lands’ End as I receive them for the next few weeks and through June. You can easily sign up for email alerts to keep you aware of sales. Periodically, Lands’ End offers a “Penny Sale” on embroidery so that you can order a polo and get the logo for one cent.

And just a reminder…May 15th is rapidly approaching and that is the end of the volunteer hours year. That means that you must record your volunteer hours before this date in the large binder in the Parent Workroom. If you can’t make it into school during regular hours, I would be happy to record them for you. Just send an email with your information and I will staple it to your family log page. Remember that “unworked” hours are billed at $20 per hour. Per your tuition contract, you owe $600 ($400 if you are a single parent) if you did not do any volunteer hours. So please stop in and record your hours.

I hope everyone had a chance this week to see all the wonderful artwork on display at the Annual Spring Art Show and stock up on summer reading material at the Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you to Mrs. Galash and all the Art Show volunteers, and also Cheri Krebs and the team of Book Fair volunteers.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

Sincerely,

Susan

Order Your Personalized Brick for the Field of Dreams Walkway

In May 2009, The Madeleine Community completed The Field of Dreams with the installation of a brick walkway on Klickitat Street between 23rd and 24th avenue. Recently, the city permanently closed Klickitat to motor vehicles on this block and installed a bikeway complete with native plants and bioswale which complements our brick walkway very nicely. We invite you to become a part of the legacy by adding your personalized engraved brick which paves the entrance of this exciting community recreation area.

Consider an engraved brick with your family name, or, perhaps the name of an alum. How about a gift for a friend or family member? We welcome individuals, families, clubs, teams and anyone who would like to leave a legacy. Personal inscriptions are a wonderful way to remember special occasions like birthdays, baptisms, graduations, or a special tribute to people like favorite teachers and grandparents. What a thoughtful and unique way of leaving a lasting mark at The Madeleine. All bricks will be engraved in July of 2013.

Please complete the enclosed form and return it with your payment. Or contact Lynn Robinson, at 503-288-9197 or lrobinson@themadeleine.edu to place your order. All proceeds directly benefit The Madeleine Field of Dreams project.

Students Donate to Playground for All Players

Thank you to second graders, Stella and Riley Schneider, who donated $44 to the Playground for All Players project last week! The girls earned money by doing extra chores at home, and their dad, Steve Schneider, matched their donation.

Alumni and Friends Celebrate The Madeleine School

Last week, almost 150 Madeleine alumni and friends gathered to share memories and celebrate the ongoing success of The Madeleine School.

As soon-to-be alumni, the 8th grade class attended the luncheon and had a chance to meet former Madeline students.

The Kindergarten class provided musical entertainment, and 2010 Madeleine graduate, Malika Washington spoke about the impact her Madeleine education has had in her life.

We couldn't have done it without the many student and parent volunteers who helped make the Alumni Lunch such a big success!   Special thanks go out to Julie Doherty and Sarah Thurston-Sullivan who helped for two days in a row with both set-up and the event itself.

In addition, we would like to recognize and thank Lisa Colling, Julie Crawford, Henry Davison, Veronika Demelius, Molly Faherty, Kristina Gianotti, Sonya Gonzales, Nora Gravengaard, Louise Hallman, Kate Harpster, Barbara Ketchum, Sadie Lincoln, Larry Merrifield, Man Ninh, Emily Pennick, Anne Thompson, and April Tillman.

Thank you to our student volunteers who cheerfully greeted and served lunch to the alumni: Elizabeth Gessesse, Tony Gianotti, Hadley Hallman, Mariah Hendricks, Grant Lance, Ian Kelleher, Fiona Lindsay, Jaida Mitchell, Clara Porter, Bella Posovich, Sophia Sherlag, Peter Tooley, and Emma Witka.

Finally, thank you to Mrs. Galash for loaning some art to decorate the walls and to the entire Kindergarten class for serenading the alumni!

4th Grade Delivers 177 St. Michael's Lunches

Congratulations to the fourth grade for bring in 177 fabulous sack lunches this week.  The bags were so well labeled that sorting was a breeze.  The Madeleine school also donated dozens of large cookies that will be quickly consumed by the guests who dine at St. Michael’s.  Once again, I am deeply thankful to all the parents and students who make this weekly service project so successful. The sun shines on us all this week!

Join the Bridge Program to Welcome New Families

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year.  The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.  In addition, there are four opportunities during the school year to obtain volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

Fundraiser for NW Mothers Milk Bank

Milk banks screen, process and dispense donated human milk that provides life-saving nourishment for babies whose own mothers cannot supply the milk they need. There are only 12 milk banks in the U.S., and the closest ones to our area are in San Jose, CA and Denver, CO. Volunteers for Northwest Mothers Milk Bank plan to open a Portland milk bank this summer. New Seasons Market is accepting donations at all locations, and on May 11th and 12th, when you buy chocolate cupcakes in the bakery section, they will donate all proceeds to the NW Mothers Milk Bank. Contact Madeleine parent and Northwest Mothers Milk Bank board member, Annette Magner, for more information. Annette_magner@msn.com
