Light Green Tips

Take the bus or carpool with a friend! Public transit is efficient and the City of Portland offers free passes to students.  This reduces air pollution by limiting the amount of emissions produced by burning fossil fuels.  It also helps save money by reducing your family’s annual fuel cost.

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Ah, a three day weekend. That translates to a few extra hours of sleep. As a person who is slowly recovering from a bout with the flu (I think the flu won, though) I am looking forward to three days of sleeping in past 5:45am.

I hope your plans include the Parish Crab Feed this Saturday night. There are still tickets available, but don’t wait until Saturday night. Contact the parish office or Rich Hammons (rhammons@themadeleine.edu) for info.

On Tuesday of next week, I will be giving the yearly State of the School address. Just like our governor and our president, I will be reviewing and updating a few topics regarding our school, including our new safety procedures. We will gather in the Fireside Room at 7:00 and I hope to keep it under one hour, as I know everyone has a busy schedule.

Angela is very thankful to all of you who have sent in your re-registration form for next year. We need to have an accurate count of all who are returning so that we can offer seats to prospective families. We really appreciate your attention to this request.

Sincerely,

Susan

6th Grade Outdoor School Fundraiser

The 6th grade class is raising money for their upcoming week at Outdoor School by offering a chance to "Flock a Friend." For $20, you can have a flock of pink flamingos placed in a friend's front yard. And for $25, you can purchase "Anti-Flocking Insurance" to keep your own yard free of flamingoes! Download the "Flock a Friend" order form, and "Anti-Flocking Insurance" form, and bring them to the school office along with your payment to get involved with this "fun"-raiser.

Driver Needed for St. Michael’s Lunch delivery next Tuesday, 1/22

I’m looking for someone who’d be able to drive lunches down to St. Michael’s in downtown Portland next Tuesday morning, 1/22.  8th graders will help load lunches into your car, then you deliver them.  The time commitment is 8:30 - 9:30 am and detailed instructions are available.

Please contact me, Sarah Chartz, at 503 522 0176 or schartz@comcast.net if you can help.  I’m also looking for volunteers who’d consider driving in emergencies like this.  If you are interested, please let me know and I’ll add you to the list. Thanks so much for considering this.  Sarah Chartz

Care for Creation Committee Volunteers Needed

"The environment is God's gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole." - US Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Care for Creation Committee (Stewardship & Sustainability) works to reduce the environmental impact of the Madeleine Parish buildings, grounds, operations and events, to raise awareness of environmental issues and opportunities, and to engage with the Parish and surrounding communities to inspire a ripple effect of positive action that benefits people and planet.

Please join us as a new committee member or volunteer. We’d like to continue our tradition of offering electronic waste recycling in the Parish Hall, and need someone to take over that specific task. We also sponsor a number of events throughout the year and need more helping hands to continue this important work. Short, sweet meetings (often with wine) are de rigueur.

Please email Shauna Mohr if you’re interested in becoming involved: shauna.a.mohr@gmail.com

1st Grade Delivers 312 St. Michael's Lunches

Well, I’m glad I have a big car because the St Michael’s lunch deliveries continue to grow!  The first grade class did a fantastically awesome job of bringing in 312 well packed lunches today.  We also delivered 21 PB & J sandwiches, a big bag of cuties, and boxes of granola bars to the lunch program at St Michael's.  Many men lined the sidewalk this morning waiting for the lunch doors to open at 10:30.  They broke into huge smiles when I told them we’d just delivered some great lunches they would soon enjoy and we heard many shouts of “thank you” as the 8th graders and I walked back to our car.  Finally, a huge thank you to our 8th graders who continue to sort, tally, haul, pack and unpack the car each Tuesday.  When the numbers get this big, their smiles and muscles make a hard job easy!

CYO Sports Updates

The CYO K – 3rd Grade Swimming Championships are this Sunday January 20th at Mt. Hood Community College.  Please congratulate our Madeleine swimmers for all their hard work and dedication this season:  Ava McDonald, Mary Hanley, Hannah Gladysz, Ava Trueworthy, Elisa Andrews, Ingrid Mohr, AJ Wight, Milo Rios, Parker Jones, Carlyle Mohr and Isabel McDonald.  And thank you to Coach Kristin Rios for all her hard work and dedication too!

Check out this weekend's sports schedule and come cheer on your friends.

Living the Eucharist signups this weekend
Masses of January 19–20 & January 26–27
Living the Eucharist is a program our parish is participating in during Lent which provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith through learning more about the Eucharist, participating more actively in Mass, and Living the Eucharist each day as disciples of Jesus.
Last year, more than 100 people participated in 16 small groups parish wide. This year, we have a great group of facilitators and a compelling program....now all we need is you! We will be holding sign ups for Living the Eucharist at Masses the weekends of January 19–20 and January 26–27. For questions, contact Scott Baier, 503-281-5777 ext. 22. Also, don't miss Sister Cecilia's Theology Corner this week regarding the Eucharist...

CYO lost and found to be cleared at end of January
The CYO lost and found has grown considerably and unfortunately has been frequently dumped all over the gym floor.
If you have lost anything, please check the lost and found as soon as possible as we will donate any remaining items. We plan to donate any lost and found items at the end of the month. If you need to retrieve anything, please do it as soon as possible.

Leadership Night thank you!
Next meeting April 30; please save the date!
Thank you to ministry, committee and commission leaders who attended our parish’s winter quarter Leadership Night on Wednesday. Please mark your calendars for our Spring meeting, April 30. Please email Tammy Shadel, tshadel@themadeleine.edu, if you will be unable to attend. Thank you!

Help Keep the Doors Locked

The parish schedules our door access system to unlock and lock for the meetings and events that are scheduled on the parish calendar. We are working to reduce the number of doors we are unlocking for each event to keep the campus more secure.
If your meeting is cancelled, please notify Kelly Johnson in the parish office so the unlock/lock can be removed from the system.
Your group should use the main entrance to enter a building for a scheduled meeting or event, as we are working to remove side and back doors from unlocking for meetings. This improves safety for everyone.

Next Kids’ Night In scheduled for March 2
Just $5. Information & signup form at www.themadeleine.edu/faithformation
We have a date...now you parents can have one, too! Saturday, March 2 is the next episode of Kids’ Night In. It’s a great night of food, fun, and games and learning for kids Kindergarten through 5th Grade.
Parents will drop kids off at the Parish Hall after 5:00 pm Mass, then pick them up at 8:15. You can stay if you want, or....you can have a Parents’ Night Out!
Dinner, in the form of pizza, will be provided, and the evening will include dessert in the form of ice cream or other treat. All this, for just $5! Much less expensive, and more educational, than a couple hours of babysitting, right?
Volunteers needed: kids & adults
We could use some more volunteers—about 4 more adults and a few more teens, 8th Grade and older to help with setup, cleanup and supervision. No prior knowledge or training needed, except adults need to be current on your Call to Protect.
