A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What a “Spirit-filled” week we had! From fuzzy moustaches on Monday to clash day on Wednesday (kudos to Mrs. Galash and Mrs. O’Mahoney for their outfits) to red Jogathon clad runners on Friday-it was action packed and lots of fun. On Thursday we welcomed over 150 Grandparents and Special Friends to visit the classrooms and celebrate Mass with us. A big thank you to Tessa Siegel, Anne Gaber, and a wonderful group of volunteers for organizing the event, complete with tasty pastries, white roses, and 6 lucky winners of rose bushes.

As I write this, the Jogathon is still a few hours away, but with all the careful preparation and organization of our chairs, I know it will be a great success. Shelby Walker and Kelsi Charlesworth have worked very hard to make this a great fundraiser and fun-raiser for our school. We can’t forget Greg Rosebrook, our Money Man, and Ann Reno for coming to the Monday assemblies to get the kids excited about their run and all the talliers for cheering their students on. Also, we have long neglected to thank Terry Mitchell for providing the music that keeps the kids going for 50 minutes. We are so blessed to have a school community that supports and encourages everything we do. I am sure I have forgotten a few names, but please know we so appreciate all you do for The Madeleine.

Just a few reminders…

Sincerely,

Susan

McMenamins Donates $2,287 to The Madeleine

Thank you to all our family and friends who dined at The Kennedy School on Monday, April 15. The school received 50% of the night’s sales for a total of $2,287. The money will be used to help reduce the cost of Outdoor School for next year’s 6th Graders. The class is off to a great start thanks to your participation.

Debbie Ryan and Lenny Supnet are New Parents Club Officers!

Thank you to Debbie Ryan for volunteering to be the Room Rep Coordinator for the 2013-2014 school year. She will be working hard to find volunteer room reps, hosts for home Masses and spiritual gatherings, and coordinating the Teacher Appreciation Day. Lenny Supnet is our new Parent Education Coordinator and will research guest speakers on parenting issues. Thank you to Jackie Dooris for your years of volunteer service in these positions and thank you for helping pass the torch to our next generation of officers!

Still needed: Hot Lunch Coordinators and Parents Club Vice President!

Book Fair is May 5th - 10th

The Book Fair will be open starting Sunday 5/5 after the 9:00am Mass and continuing before and after school that week. We will also be open during the Art Show on 5/9. Shopping the fair is a great way to find new reading material for your home and is a way to support the efforts of new reading materials in all the classrooms and the library as well. Book Fair flyers to come home in Friday folders next week.

Volunteers still needed for afternoon shifts. Please contact krebs.cheri@gmail.com if interested.

Ch-Ch-Changes in Parents Club

In an effort to streamline the Parents Club fundraising activities, next year the wrapping paper and wreath sales will be eliminated.  These two high effort/low return fundraisers will be replaced by additional Dining Out Night opportunities and an enhanced scrip marketing program.  Our annual fundraising goal for 2013 – 2014 is $200,000, which funds 12% of the school’s total operating budget.  If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Nora Gravengaard (outgoing Parents Club president) or Lisa Luna (incoming president).

Counselor's Column

This week's topic: "Emotional Intelligence (EQ)"

If children learn to persevere and accept mistakes as a natural part of learning, they will be better able to control themselves and handle their frustrations in positive ways. Find out more in this week's Counselor's Column.

6th Grade Delivers 113 St. Michael's Lunches

The 6th grade brought in 113 lunches this week, which made the volunteers at St. Michael's very happy. They were thrilled when they discovered three huge boxes of Schwartz Bros. bakery treats donated by Amy Boots. Irvan was in the kitchen stirring beef noodle soup and with the sweets, lunches, and soup, all who dined at St Michael’s this week would be well fed.

The Art Show is Coming: Volunteers Needed

The big set up day is Monday, May 6th starting at 8:00 a.m. We also need volunteers for the following:

Any Time: Making loops of tape to stick work to the wall, mounting art on black paper (packets of art can be signed out and worked on at home), and arranging mounted art on the walls.

Friday May 10th more help will be needed taking art down, and sorting it into student portfolios.

School Advisory Council Nominations for Next Year

Are you interested in helping to shape the direction of our school? Then, we need you! The Madeleine School Advisory Council has three positions (3-year terms) that need to be filled. Download the nomination form here, and return it to the office by Thursday, May 2nd.

What a treat!

The Portland Symphonic Girlchoir presented a vocal concert to our 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students Friday morning, April 26. They sang several selections and invited our students to participate through singing and clapping. The Artistic Director, Roberta Q Jackson said that The Madeleine students were the most attentive, respectful, focused, and engaged students she had ever met. She said their participation and enthusiasm made it such a pleasure for her and the choir. Girls from Kindergarten through the 12th grade may audition to be a part of Girlchoir. Auditions are in May. Visit www.girlchoir.com or call 503-226-6162 for more information.

This Week's Checklist

First Eucharist this Weekend
Keep our First Communicants in your prayers as they prepare to receive this important sacrament at our 11:00 am Mass this Sunday!

Leadership Night
Tuesday, April 30, 6:30
Calling the leadership of all committees, councils and ministries! It’s time for this quarter’s Leadership Night on Tuesday at 6:30.
We’ll begin in the Fireside Room, then breakout into small groups, discuss our goings on, then report back to the main group. With everything going on in our parish, this is a very important evening. Please, we look forward to seeing you.

Grief & Bereavement Group
Sunday afternoon, 2:00 pm
Whether one’s loss was of a spouse, parent, friend, job, home, child who is drug-addicted, or daughter who refuses to speak to us—the supports of listening, sharing, and praying with a faith community can facilitate healing. Adults of all ages—teens to nineties—are welcome to join us at the next meeting, the last Sunday of the month, April 28, 2:00-3:30, Fireside Room. Sister Cecilia and Father Mike.

Knights of Columbus Baby Bottle Drive
For the next two weekends, the Knights of Columbus will be handing out baby bottles for you to fill with cash donations in support of the the Mother & Child Education Center, which offers non-judgmental support for women facing choices with regard to pregnancy. Bring them back on Mother’s Day.

The Locks, They Are A'Changing
As we have been reporting for some time now, the exterior locks on all the buildings are being replaced by a keyfob/access control system. If you haven’t turned in your old key and gotten your keyfob, you should do so soon, as you will find the doors won’t open with the old keys. The rectory and the church doors have all been changed out. Questions? Contact Parish Business Manager Kelly Johnson.
