Light Green Tips

Grow a garden! Plant seedlings indoors with kids. Go to your local garden store and choose seeds and soil. Talk about what veggies and herbs they like to eat or are curious to taste. Use old toilet paper tubes to grow your seedlings – plant straight into the ground and the cardboard will break down into the soil as the plant grows.

Madeleine 8th Graders Win at Central Catholic Math Fest

In January, eight of our 7th and 8th Graders were selected to represent The Madeleine School at the 13th Annual Central Catholic Math Fest. Our kids were put into 4-student teams, 2 from each school, and competed in a variety of math-focused events.Representing The Madeleine were:

8th Grade: Larry Ninh, Owen Riley, Evan Sheridan , Colin Hammons

7th Grade: Clara Porter, Grace Rosebrook, Dean Santos and Grant Lance

The teams competed very well! Larry and Owen's team won the 8th Grade Boxes & Locks event. Clara and Grace's team took 3rd place in the 7th Grade Boxes & Locks competition. Dean and Grant's team took 2nd place in the 7th Grade Logic and Guess My Rule events.

Science Night is Thursday, Feb. 28

You’re Invited!  The Madeleine School proudly presents Science Night 2013 on Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30.  The middle school will be hosting an evening of science challenges and fun for scientists of all ages.  Parents and children are invited to play at the bubble station, make their own slime, build science toys, or compete in the egg drop competition and boat races.  Middle school students will be also presenting many exciting science demonstrations.  All of the 6 – 8th grade science experiments will be on display in the Atrium. Don't miss this great night of hands-on science fun!

7th Graders Experience REAL.LIFE

Last week, Mrs. Bourke and the 7th grade class visited the REAL.LIFE exhibit, sponsored by Medical Teams International, which allows people to experience what REAL. LIFE is like for children affected by disaster, conflict and poverty. The students learned about natural disasters such as the tsunami in Indonesia, hurricane Katrina, and a burn unit in Moldova.

According to 7th grader, Fiona Lindsay, "The REAL.LIFE exhibit made me see the world from a different point of view." Vinnie Perry, another 7th grader, agreed and said, "Seeing the REAL.LIFE exhibit made me want to donate money and give out toiletry kits and school kits to children suffering through these disasters."

5th Grade Delivers 137 St. Michael's Lunches

The 5th grade did a wonderful job feeding the guests at St. Michael’s today.  They made 137 lunches and brought in an extra 30 PB&J sandwiches.  We also dropped off a big box of pastries and breakfast breads that looked delicious.  The Hughes family went downtown this morning and delivered two gi-normous buckets of homemade chili; enough to easy feed 150 guests at St. Michael’s!  The Madeleine community has a huge heart and it is truly amazing to see the work so many do to feed our neighbors in need.

Tax Preparation Time

As a courtesy to you, our extremely generous parents and donors, here is a link to all of the organizations the school supported throughout 2012 and a list of the school’s fundraisers. If you would like a copy of your auction receipt or a letter stating a donation was received, please contact Lynn Robinson, Development Director at lrobinson@themadeleine.edu

About those doors...use the right one!
Installed this summer was an access control system throughout the campus, which unlocks doors with special key fob sensors, or by a preset schedule for events. If you’re here for a scheduled event, simply pull on the right-side door for entry. (Many people are pulling the locked left-side door repeatedly, causing unnecessary strain on the doors.) Please let the people in your group activities know this is the proper way to enter the doors for their events. If you have been issued a fob sensor to unlock doors, and it is not working properly, please contact Kelly Johnson, Business Manager, kjohnson@themadeleine.edu.
Father Mike, and the entire staff and faculty of the parish and school, hold safety as our top priority. We are always looking for ways to continually improve our security and safety. We are formulating safety procedures that we will issue with facilities request forms. Your input is always welcome. Read more in this week's bulletin
