Light Green Tips

Turn of the water while brushing teeth: Encouraging your family members to turn off the water while brushing teeth is a simple, yet very effective method of conserving water.  Track your monthly water bill and see if it makes a dent!  This can save up to 8 gallons per day, per person and the tip can be applied to other activities like washing hands (turn off while you soap up!) and shaving.  Help your children understand this concept by teaching them that by saving water now, it means always having enough water when we need it later. A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Many thanks to the parents who were able to come to the State of the School address last Tuesday. Also, a big thank you to Rich Hammons for taking excellent notes and to Lynn Robinson for capturing the highlights and including them in today’s Footnotes. If you have any questions about the information, or any questions about other topics, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Rather than rely on the “rumor mill,” it is usually more efficient to direct questions to the source or someone who can find out. That should be me!

Catholic Schools Week begins this Sunday. We would like as many students as possible to attend the 9:00 Mass. Students will find a seat with their family and then gather in the back of church. All classes have banners and students will process in behind their banners. We would really like students to wear their uniforms to Mass to identify them as Madeleine students. I hope to see you at 9:00 Mass.

Open House is fast approaching and we are still missing quite a few re-registration forms. As I said before, we need to know how many openings we have for prospective families.  Angela told me that we still have not heard from 76 families—almost half of our school community. Now I assume that those 76 families do not want to pay the higher registration fee, right? So please take a minute and fill out the form and send it to Angela in the school office.

Related to next year….if you would like to apply for tuition assistance, the Archdiocese will be using the same company to process requests as in the past few years. Applications can be found online at www.factstuitionaid.com. Supporting documents need to be mailed in after the application has been submitted. There are flyers outside the school office to explain the process. Deadline for consideration is April 3rd.

Sincerely,

Susan

6th Grade Outdoor School Fundraiser

The 6th grade class is raising money for their upcoming week at Outdoor School by offering a chance to "Flock a Friend." For $20, you can have a flock of pink flamingos placed in a friend's front yard. And for $25, you can purchase "Anti-Flocking Insurance" to keep your own yard free of flamingoes! Download the "Flock a Friend" order form, and "Anti-Flocking Insurance" form, and bring them to the school office along with your payment to get involved with this "fun"-raiser.

Papa Murphy's scrip cards help raise money 6th grade Outdoor School now too. The coupon cards are available for purchase at the scrip office. The card is good at all 3 of the local Papa Murphy's locations (all on Fremont). By purchasing one of the cards for just $5 you'll get some great deals, support a local business as well as help to raise funds for the 6th grade students to attend outdoor school. Thank you!

News from the Art Room

Displays of student art are changing quickly at The Madeleine.  New to View in the halls this week:  Second grade has finished a flock of frosty feathered friends.  Their Snowbirds get their frosty look from an Epsom salt wash.  Third grade stirred up a snow storm with There's a Blizzard Rollin' In!  The final touch on these Grandma Moses inspired winter scenes is snow printed on using an ear of sweet corn.  They loved controlling the weather with a piece of produce.  Several classes continue to build their watercolor painting skills.  Look for their work soon. Eighth grade have started a new unit Double Vision, Future Vision:  The Power of One.  They are likely to be working on this project until the end of winter term.  Students were introduced to the work of environmentalist Rachel Carson, the artist and activist Ai Weiwei, Pablo Picasso and others who have made a difference through their art. They have art homework this week to help them prepare for what they will be creating.

Your auction gift:  Thanks to your overwhelming generosity at this fall's auction, loads of new art supplies are beginning to flood the art room.  Stay tuned for details.

Have a wonderful weekend and make some art!

Kindergarten Delivers 269 St. Michael's Lunches

The Kindergarten class brought in 269 sack lunches today!  They also contributed socks, carrots and 5 large cases of Pastries from Amy Boots.  A huge thank you goes out to Louise Hallman who generously volunteered to deliver lunches to St. Michael’s. Finally Irvan, a volunteer at St Michael’s, emailed this note; I thought I’d share it with the school as it reminds us all that the small gestures of kindness mean the most.

Hi Sarah,  “A man came for the Sack Lunch today and told Pat: “ The school children’s notes in the sack lunches mean a lot to me” ( Referring to a note written last Tuesday by a First Grade student.) “I took my note out every day this past week and re-read it.” Also, a lot of people make comments about the decorations and notes on the brown paper bags.  It show the positive influence a students note can be on the Poor that are alone.  Irvan

Madeleine Parent, Aaron Woo, Featured in Sunset Magazine

Check out Maddie (4th grade) and Ethan (2nd grade) Woo's dad, Chef Aaron Woo, in the January issue of Sunset Magazine. The magazine called his new restaurant, Natural Selection, "Portland's vegetarian dining game-changer." Congratulations to Aaron and his wife, Karen Woodbury!

Living the Eucharist signups this weekend

Masses of January 26–27
Living the Eucharist is a program our parish is participating in during Lent which provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith through learning more about the Eucharist, participating more actively in Mass, and Living the Eucharist each day as disciples of Jesus.
Last year, more than 100 people participated in 16 small groups parish wide. This year, we have a great group of facilitators and a compelling program....now all we need is you! We will be holding signups for Living the Eucharist at Masses this weekend, January 26–27. If you missed the signup dates, contact Scott Baier, 503-281-5777 ext. 22.

CYO lost and found to be cleared at end of January

The CYO lost and found has grown considerably and unfortunately has been frequently dumped all over the gym floor.
If you have lost anything, please check the lost and found as soon as possible as we will donate any remaining items. We plan to donate any lost and found items at the end of the month. If you need to retrieve anything, please do it as soon as possible.

Please, no “hanging around” in the parish hall or gym

The safety and security of our parish children, students, parishioners, staff and neighbors remains a top concern for Father Mike, Susan Steele and the entire faculty and staff of the parish and school. As such, we’re making a change to our security procedures in the parish hall, gym and other meeting spaces.
Unless you are attending a regularly scheduled meeting or event, or have explicit permission from the school or parish office, visitors, parents or students will no longer be allowed to “hang out” in the gym, parish hall or other meeting spaces, when no activity is scheduled.
Why? In the event of fire, earthquake or other catastrophe, we need to be able to account for everyone in the buildings, and we rely on our calendar and scheduled events to do this.

In other safety news, the Archdiocese is holding safety workshops for parish and school staff on Feb. 5. Father Mike, along with Susan Steele, School Principal and Kelly Johnson, Parish Business Manager, will attend. The workshops will focus on enhancing the physical premises for safety and security.

Please, we encourage you to report any safety problem, including a malfunctioning door, non-working equipment, lights that aren’t working, or suspicious activity to the school or parish office. We welcome your ideas and input regarding safety and security; please email kjohnson@themadeleine.edu

An open letter from Father Mike:

I am writing today to provide you with an update on the issue of the security lights currently installed on our parish and school property along 23rd Avenue. You may have heard conversations, read articles, or even received notices from the City of Portland on this subject...

Mardi Gras volunteers needed!

Our second annual Mardi Gras celebration is coming up in a hurry and, not surprisingly, we could use some volunteers to help make it a success.
We need volunteers in all areas, including setup, cleanup, serving during the event and people to help in the Family Funzone kids’ area in the gym. Also, since we cannot have a bouncy house this year (Archdiocesan ruling), we’re looking for some other great ideas for kids. So, if you can volunteer, or have great kids’ ideas, contact Janeen Reilly Allred 503-819-2526 or janeenreilly13@gmail.com. BONUS: Central Catholic students can earn service hours by working the event!
