Light Green Tips

Supermarket Scavenger Hunt - Select locally produced and/or sustainably sourced products while you shop and have the kids participate. Give them a scorecard and ask them to tally up all the items that fit this category. Task children with the ‘job’ of helping to remember to bring your reusable bags back to the store.

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We will not be sending out a Footnotes next week, so I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope your days are filled with joy as you celebrate the birth of our Lord. The holiday season gives us many reminders to be thankful for all the gifts God has bestowed on us. Our Madeleine community is certainly one of the gifts in my life and I am so grateful.

I am also grateful to be traveling to Denver over the vacation to meet my newest grandchild—a boy born on 12-12-12—a really special early Christmas present!

Sincerely,

Susan

The Madeleine School Christmas Program

Please join us at The Madeleine Christmas program which will take place on Tuesday, December 18th at 7 pm in The Madeleine Parish Church.

Kindergarten through 4th grade students will charm us with song, dance, and instruments. We will also have a chance to hear music from our very own MUSE Band. Finally, the 5th grade students will tell us more about the Christmas story through an exciting musical called “The Star.”

The Christmas program is a long-standing tradition at The Madeleine School, and the students have been working hard to present this very special gift to you.

Greetings from the Art Room

It is so exciting to see how much art comes out of our jewel box of an art room. New to view this week are Layered Landscapes by the 4th grade. These little beauties feature three layers of translucent paper to convey the concept of “atmospheric perspective” (things get hazy and colors are softened the further away objects are.) It was a complex and challenging project but you will be delighted with how well they demonstrate their understanding of several aspects of perspective. There is a herd of the happiest hippos you will ever meet just completed by our second graders. You are guaranteed to smile when you see these rotund fellows in their murky waterholes in this mixed media work. The water even looks wet. Hooray for Hippos! Go on Safari with the third grade's African Sunset Silhouettes. These pieces feature a subtle “rubbing off” oil pastel technique which gives the grassland a shimmery quality. Watercolor sunsets add a dramatic backdrop for giraffes, elephants, gazelle, lions and more. If you look quickly you might see the Kindergarten Christmas stockings before they go home for the holidays. Thank you to my Kindergarten Mom Angel who did such a beautiful job adding glitter to the names on each stocking making this simple wax resist project sparkle. By Monday afternoon the fifth graders should be done with their Pop Up Gingerbread Houses. You can catch a glimpse of them on the table outside the art room before they go home. I think the fifth graders have had way too much fun making these and breaking in the new Collage Center in grand style! Time is short but there may be an angel, 3-D star or Christmas tree coming to a backpack near you.

Stay tuned for more Art Adventures,
Regards,
Mrs. Galash

4th Grade Delivers 93 St. Michael's Lunches

The fourth grade did a great job this week for St. Michael’s lunches. They brought in 109 sack lunches as well as a few socks and special treats. 93 meat sandwiches went along way to feed to cold, wet and hungry friends gathered outside the church on this rainy Tuesday. A big thank you goes out to all the students and parents who make this happen.

Former Madeleine Student Lights Up the Silver Screen

The Hollywood Theatre is the place to be this Friday night.  Former Madeleine student, Emily Galash, stars in Nightscape as the movie makes its Portland debut.  In this paranormal thriller, she plays “an emotionally guarded drifter” who realizes it is up to her to try to stop the evil that has overtaken a small town.  Tentacles, Phantom car, “Black Luck” and our very own Star...what an exciting way to kick off the weekend!  Show starts at 9:30 p.m. and is followed by a Q and A session.  Who knows, you might even see a star or two.  Locally filmed, independently made Nightscape is for mature audiences.  Congratulations to Emily, Mrs. Galash's daughter!

Christmas Masses Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24
† 4:00 pm – Mass (with Pageant)
† 7:00 pm – Mass
† Midnight – Mass. Join us for lessons & carols at 11:30 pm
Christmas Day, Tuesday, December 25
† 10:00 am – Mass

Christmas Eve Mass seating requests As you all know, Christmas Eve Masses are among our most heavily attended. We will set up additional seating and open the balcony in an attempt to accommodate as many people as possible. When arriving for Christmas Eve Masses, please be respectful of all. Two specific requests:
1) Respect our honored citizens
Several pews will be reserved for honored citizens for whom getting around is not as easy as it once was. Also, at Mass, look around! If you are fit and able, and see someone who is in greater need of the seat than yourself, please offer them a place to sit.
2) Speaking of seats, please don’t save
It’s a dubious tradition here—people using coats, papers, ribbons, prone bodies, etc., to save vast swaths of seats for late-arriving friends and family. Please, on this night, let’s not do that. Bring your entire family together, and enjoy the pre-Mass music together.Thank you!
