A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Tuition contracts and several forms for the next school year are coming home in today’s Friday Folders. Mrs. Rosebrook would be so happy if all the contracts and forms were turned in by next week. I know there are a lot of forms, but please sit down this weekend with your favorite summer beverage and take a few moments to complete them and make Mrs. Rosebrook's dreams come true.

I'll keep my note short this week, since I had so much to say last week. Have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

Madeleine Begins Annual Fund Campaign

Did you know that tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating our students? Each year we must make up the additional 25% per student through fundraising activities. Beginning this year, we are asking our community to help establish a regular source of ongoing funding for our school: The Madeleine Annual Fund.

During the Annual Fund Campaign, we will ask everyone—families, alumni, parishioners, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends—to contribute. What is most important is your participation, not the amount you are able to give. Every level of support is valued and appreciated.

100% of your donation will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation and 100% of your donation is tax deductible.

Check the Friday Folders for information about the Annual Fund Campaign, or download the Madeleine School Annual Fund FAQ.

Art Show Puts Student Creativity on Display

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends, and Madeleine students who helped make last week's Art Show a huge success. Whether you prepared art for display, arranged them on the walls, attended the event, or helped to take down and sort student work for their portfolios, it wouldn't have happened without you.

This year's show featured more than a thousand pieces of visual art and again we had the pleasure of MUSE Band and Arpeggio Harps to add to the atmosphere.

Congratulations to the students for all their creativity and dedication in the art room this year. Look for your child's art portfolio to come home soon.

And many thanks to Mrs. Galash for her work in the art classroom and for spearheading another amazing Madeleine Art Show!

We are featuring a new Scrip Of The Week—Washman Auto Spa. The scrip is $4 a piece or a book of 5 for $20.Washman Auto Spa donates 26% to The Madeleine!, so stock up for summer, give them as gifts to dads and grads, coaches and friends! Every dollar you spend on scrip benefits The Madeleine!

6th Graders Get Their Hands Dirty for Auction Payoff

The Sixth Graders planted flowers and shrubs this week as the payoff for an auction item, won by the Puetz Family. In addition to the Puetz's house, they planted on the parish grounds as well.

The students have received lots of experience planting from the SOLV tree-planting activity they did early in the year.

3rd Grade Delivers 104 St. Michael's Lunches

This week, the third grade brought in 104 sack lunches and 42 individuals sandwiches. The bags were beautifully decorated and had “let your light shine” messages printed on them. Nice touch third graders and thank you for all your help and effort with this service project!  As the weather becomes warmer, the volunteer coordinator at St. Michael’s, shifts from making soups to smoothies.  Any fruits for smoothie making would be greatly appreciated.

Join the Bridge Program to Welcome New Families

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year.  The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

6th Grade Olympics

Sixth graders capped off their study of ancient Greece with a day of Olympic-style competitions. The students formed city-state teams and researched events from the ancient games.

Two students ran the Olympic torch around the Field of Dreams to signal the beginning of the games. The teams then competed in events modified from the ancient games that included running in armor, jumping, javelin, three-legged race, tug-o-war, and chariot racing.

Thank you to all the parents who helped with this event and congratulations to Corinth who took first place!

Personalized Bricks for the Field of Dreams

In May 2009, The Madeleine Community completed The Field of Dreams with the installation of a brick walkway on Klickitat Street between 23rd and 24th avenue. Recently, the city permanently closed Klickitat to motor vehicles on this block and installed a bikeway complete with native plants and bioswale which complements our brick walkway very nicely. We invite you to become a part of the legacy by adding your personalized engraved brick which paves the entrance of this exciting community recreation area.

Consider an engraved brick with your family name, or, perhaps the name of an alum. How about a gift for a friend or family member? We welcome individuals, families, clubs, teams and anyone who would like to leave a legacy. Personal inscriptions are a wonderful way to remember special occasions like birthdays, baptisms, graduations, or a special tribute to people like favorite teachers and grandparents. What a thoughtful and unique way of leaving a lasting mark at The Madeleine. All bricks will be engraved in July of 2013.

Please complete the enclosed form and return it with your payment. Or contact Lynn Robinson, at 503-288-9197 or lrobinson@themadeleine.edu to place your order. All proceeds directly benefit The Madeleine Field of Dreams project.

Celebrate Pentecost—and be sure to wear red

This weekend, we celebrate Pentecost, the culmination of the Easter season. We have two great pieces that look at Pentecost in depth in this week's bulletin: Theology Corner by Sister Cecilia Ranger and Pastoral Reflections by our Pastoral Associate, Janet Satterlee. Read more in this week’s bulletinAs the color red symbolizes Pentecost, all are encouraged to wear red to Masses this weekend.

School families: We want to see your faces!
E-mail to photos@themadeleine.edu

In our parish database, we have a place for photos. These photos help us match names with faces when we’re entering information and such. Please, if you could send us a recent family photo, it would help us greatly! Don’t worry, we won’t put it on a billboard! Just send a photo to photos@themadeleine.edu and put your family name in the subject line. Don’t have a photo? Stop by the parish office and we’ll snap one.

Mothers of Babies and Preschool Children

Come together on May 29, 10 am–noon in the Fireside Room.
Thank you to all the mothers - and children - who joined our meeting in April. What a wonderful time to meet new friends, connect and grow. Many of us have experienced grief recently and we thought it would be healing to knit a prayer shawl. For the May 29th meeting, bring some large (size 9 or above) knitting needles (we will have extras if you don’t have any) and that’s it! No experience necessary! Invite friends who are mothers with pre-school children. Please bring your children (toys and snacks provided)!
Call or text Deborah Naugler, 503.713.3068 or Sr. Cecilia, 503.284.7286 (any day) or 503.281.5777 (Tues. or Thurs.) with any questions.

Mass times update
Nearly 325 responses—Thank you!
As you know, we recently surveyed our parishioners to find out your preferences as to times for a 2-Mass Sunday schedule.
We received 323 responses—an overwhelming turnout, our best ever—and the results were clear as to Mass time preference.
Nearly 51% of parishioners responded that they’d prefer a schedule with Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 am. Approximately 29% preferred 8:00 and 10:30 am, while just over 20% had no preference
As such, beginning on Sunday, June 16 we will be moving back to a schedule similar to last summer, with Masses at 8:00 and 10:00 am on Sundays. The Saturday, 5:00 pm Mass time will not change.
Thank you everyone for your input!
