Light Green Tips

Volunteer with Your Kids Search your local community organizations and message boards for opportunities, and then take your kids along with you (SOLV beach clean-up or even keeping our beautiful Madeleine grounds litter free!) Children will get a sense of pride in their community from making their neighborhood more beautiful. You'll also be teaching two lessons for the price of one -- protecting the environment and the importance of volunteerism. A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This was a great week to be a Catholic and work in a Catholic school with the eyes of the world on the Vatican. Everyone seems to be so excited about this humble man from Argentina. From the stories of him taking the bus to work, to cooking his own meals, to choosing the name of a saint who, incidentally, was told by God to rebuild his church in the twelfth century...I hope these character traits are a positive influence on our twentieth century Church and world. Viva il Papa!

Almost as exciting as the selection of our new Pope, was the selection of next year’s Auction chairs on Monday night. Our fantastic third grade class came together to discuss how they were going to throw the biggest Madeleine party of the year next November.  I am so happy that Dirk Fournier and Efrain Lopez first volunteered to be Auction chairs. Then Shelby Walker, Susie Andersen and Anne Gaber said they wanted to be part of the fun. After those brave souls committed, the rest of the parents checked out the sub-chair positions that were available and Auction 2013 was underway. Now to decide on a theme????? Look for more info on themes and how you can help in the next few issues of the Footnotes.

Have a great weekend and don’t miss the St. Patrick’s Day Parade this Sunday.

Sincerely,

Susan

New: This Week's Checklist

Back by popular demand: The Weekly Checklist! Many parents have commented that they miss having the printable list of reminders for the coming week in each Friday Footnotes, so we're bringing it back. The list will include events, deadlines, and upcoming items to put on your calendar. Download it here and save it on your computer or print it out and hang it on the refrigerator!

Scrip Reminder

When we buy scrip with a credit card, the school pays 2.75% in fees per transaction, so our profit is greatly reduced. If you can, please pay by check so we can get the full amount of fundraising dollars.  Thanks!

Jogathon News

Please make sure students return their Jogathon packets with sponsor sheet and all donations collected so far next Tuesday March 19th.  This is our first round of collections which will determine eligibility for prizes including Blazer Tickets!!  Packets will be returned to students the following day.

Thank You 2013 Jogathon Sponsors and Chairs!

Our Jogathon co-chairs, Shelby Walker and Kelsi Charlesworth, came up with a great idea to raise money and kick-off our pledge drive: T-shirts sponsored by our very own Madeleine parents with businesses in the community and worn by our students during and after the Jogathon. The nine sponsor slots sold out in less than two days thanks to the following businesses:

Fournier Group, The Refinery, Acme Business Consulting, Barre 3, Vista Spring Café, Central Catholic High School, DDI Benefits, Lavallee Law Firm, and Mottau & Company Inc.

Greg Rosebrook, also a  Jogathon co-chair, presented a fun challenge to the kids at the last assembly. Those who get at least three sponsors or pledges by next Tuesday, March 19th, will be put in a drawing for tickets to the March 29th Trailblazer game against the Utah Jazz. Several students also won footballs, basketballs and soccer balls for answering Jogathon history quizzes.

Thank you all for your hard work and support for our 2nd largest fundraiser of the year!

March Madness Supports Playground

On Wednesday, March 20th, express your spirit for your favorite sports team and show that you are "mad" for the Playground for All Players by bringing $2 to wear sports team related clothing. Your class "wins" an additional free dress day if it has a 75% participation rate. Join in the March Madness and help raise money for the Playground for All Players. Go Team Madeleine!

News from the Art Room

March is Youth Art Month. I hope everyone will be finding lots of opportunities to see, experience, and create art in the weeks ahead.

Auction donation news: Your generosity continues to bring new enrichment to the Art Room. This week the art prints arrived. Within minutes I was able to use some of them with one of the classes. Look for collections of prints such as Cave Art, Aboriginal Art, recycled Art, Art from other cultures and from selected eras, and an extensive collection of Meet the Masters prints, each featuring several images of an artist's work along with information about the artist. There are also new art concept teaching posters. If you cant go to the museum, the museum will come to you. I'm very excited to be able to bring some of the world's great art to our own walls.

Regards,

Mrs. Galash

2nd Grade Delivers 210 St. Michael's Lunches

WOW!  The second grade did a fabulous job with St Michael’s lunches today.  They brought in 210 perfectly labeled lunches!  That makes a huge difference to the volunteers at St Michael’s and greatly reduces the time it takes to sort lunches into specific categories.  With their volunteer pool dwindling, labeling lunches becomes very important at St. Michael’s.  We also delivered a big grocery bag of travel size shampoo and lotions, as well as five large boxes of Schwartz Bros. bakery items.  I’d say the 2nd grade rocks this week!

Spring Grounds Clean Up –Thank You!

Thank you to everyone who showed up to help with the Spring Grounds Clean-Up!  We got some much-needed weeding and pruning done and several students were able to plant some new bulbs.

A special thank you to those who have continued their support by letting us use their trailer and to Diane and Tim Slaughter for hauling the debris away.

Seventh Graders Donate to Medical Teams International

The 7th grade free dress fundraiser for Medical Teams International brought in $392. The class was inspired to donate after a field trip to the REAL LIFE exhibit sponsored by Medical Teams International, an organization which helps people who are living in poverty or are suffering from natural disasters.

Children's Liturgy of the Word and Little Church

All students who participate in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word program during 9:00am Mass on Sundays need to fill out a registration form. Forms are in a basket in the back of the church at the Madeleine website under the Faith Formation heading. Even if your child only attends once in a while, we need a completed form. There is no fee, it really is primarily for safety reasons. You may email Tina Hanselman if you have any questions. thanselman@themadeleine.edu.

Also, Tina Hanselman is trying to revive Little Church. Please see the back of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word registration form for information regarding this program. It is designed for potty trained children age 2 – 5. We have three families signed up, but need at least eight to get it going. Please encourage your friends. It’s a great, easy to follow program that allows the younger parish children to learn a little religion while the rest of the family enjoys Mass. Volunteering is truly simple, and many hands make light work.

Volunteers Needed for Easter Weekend

We need volunteers to help at the Saturday Easter Vigil Reception on March 30 from 9:30pm – 11:00pm, and also on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 10:00am – 12:00pm in the Parish Hall. We will be serving Champagne, cinnamon rolls, coffee and orange juice.

Please call or email Mary Prusso if you can help.

Join us for our Lent Communal Penance. Eight priests will be on hand to hear your confessions. Bring the entire family to participate in this important sacrament.

Klickitat construction to cause constriction starting March 25
During the construction project on Klickitat Street, BOTH school parking lot entrances will be blocked. So we will use the semicircular drive in front of the parish hall student drop off and pick up for The Madeleine School after spring break until the Klickitat bike project construction by the City of Portland is complete. It will be off limits for other uses during this time.
North Parking Lot to be closed
During construction, the north parking lot by the Field of Dreams WILL BE CLOSED completely. This will impact Easter parking, so plan accordingly and perhaps leave a few extra minutes to find parking.
Parking in the turnaround: 4’s the max
When the turnaround is used for regular uses, that is, when it’s not closed for use as the school dropoff point, it must be used appropriately for safety reasons. It only accommodates 4 vehicles, 2 south of the parish hall door and 2 north of the parish hall door that must be parked in the area that is not painted red. Never park where the curb is painted red, even for a short while, because there is not enough clearance for other vehicles to get through.
Locked out? You’ll need a fob to do the job
As the church and school continue to implement better door locking procedures, you will find that if you were once issued a key for outside doors, it doesn’t work. Everyone who enters from a locked external door should be using a keyfob. If all you have is a regular key, see the parish office to request your fob.

Vacation Bible School....Save the Date!

We are in need of teachers (18 or older). Also, youth (7th grade and older) who would like to help should contact Jennifer Russell, at 503-679-5224, or Evelyn Bian.

HELP WANTED: Dishwashers and Event Coordinators
