Light Green Tips

Clean out those closets!

Encourage the whole family to do a little spring cleaning, starting with the closets. Try on clothes and donate wearables to a local organization (or the Madeline uniform closet) instead of throwing them away. Cull useful household items, which can make a difference for low income families.

Goodwill - drop at 1231 NE Broadway

The ARC - will often pick up clothing and household goods.

The Community Warehouse provides useful household items (linens, furniture, dishes, pots and pans) to low income households. 3969 NE MLK Jr. Blvd

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On the day we return from Spring Break, April 2nd, our new Archbishop, Alexander Sample will be installed as the 11th pastor of the Portland Archdiocese. The liturgy will be held at the Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus at 2:00. We will be sending our Student Government reps along with faculty sponsors, Julie Slavik and Rob Parker. This event is open to the public, so I thought I would pass along the invitation to our Madeleine community.  If you wish to take your child to this gathering, just let his/her teacher know. I would suggest allowing ample time to find a parking spot and a good seat.

We had a beautiful all school Seder Meal this morning, even though it is not Holy Thursday yet. A big thank you to Mrs. Grimaldi for organizing the meal and to our wonderful 8th grade leaders who led their family groups in prayer. Mrs. Schneider said that even the Kindergarteners were struck by the reverential spirit in the Atrium.

While I am looking forward to Spring Break, I would rather be in school during Holy Week, so that we can gather the students in prayer during these holy days. Fr. Mike would like to offer extra religion credit to those students who attend any or all of the three day liturgies (which is really one big liturgy).  Your child has a form that he/she should bring to church and Fr. Mike will sign off on their attendance. Then bring the form back to school in April.

I hope you have a great Spring Break, getting needed rest and relaxation. Come back ready to finish the last 11 weeks of school with joy and purpose. May you have a blessed Easter.

Sincerely,

Susan

Sixth Grade Celebrates Pi Day

Sixth graders celebrated March 14 (3-14) as Pi Day by bringing pies to math class. They then measured the diameter and circumference of their pies and used them to find pi (the irrational number that describes the ratio of the diameter and circumference of a circle), aka 3.14. . ..

Yes, we let them eat the pie when they were finished.

1st Grade Delivers 302 St. Michael's Lunches

Congratulations to the 1st grade, they brought in 302 lunches this week.  Our friends at St. Michael’s are so grateful for your generosity.  With fewer volunteers to make sandwiches, our sack lunch contributions ensure that all who walk through the doors of St Michael’s will be well fed.  Thank you first graders and Schwartz Bros. for donating two boxes of french bread!

Olivia Schneider, Mission Possible

Back in December, Madeleine School graduate Olivia Schneider addressed the parish about her upcoming mission with some Gonzaga classmates. She wrote to Father Mike...
“I just got back last night from my mission possible trip to Neah Bay. It was an incredible, life changing experience. I felt that the best way to share my experience with all those who generously donated to my trip and who have been praying for me was to compose a blog with photos and journal entries. The first few entries are already up. If you could help pass this link along to people who are interested in my trip, I would greatly appreciate it. http://oliviasmissionpossibletrip.blogspot.com

Bring your Rice Bowl contributions on Holy Thursday

To all of you who have been putting money in your rice bowls, either as your loose pocket change, or contributing the money you’d otherwise spend on a meal while fasting during Lent, we thank you. To ensure that our donations will be put to use as soon as possible, please return your Rice Bowl to Holy Thursday Mass, March 28 at 7:00 pm.
Please count the money in your Rice Bowls and make a single check payable to The Madeleine. Then put the check, or any cash, into an envelope marked RICE BOWL, then place in the regular offertory collection baskets.

Klickitat construction started early!
During the construction project on Klickitat Street, BOTH school parking lot entrances will be blocked. So we will use the semicircular drive in front of the parish hall student drop off and pick up for The Madeleine School after spring break until the Klickitat bike project construction by the City of Portland is complete. It will be off limits for other uses during this time.
North Parking Lot closed
During construction, the north parking lot by the Field of Dreams WILL BE CLOSED completely. This will impact Easter parking, so plan accordingly and perhaps leave a few extra minutes to find parking.
Parking in the turnaround: 4’s the max
When the turnaround is used for regular uses, that is, when it’s not closed for use as the school dropoff point, it must be used appropriately for safety reasons. It only accommodates 4 vehicles, 2 south of the parish hall door and 2 north of the parish hall door that must be parked in the area that is not painted red. Never park where the curb is painted red, even for a short while, because there is not enough clearance for other vehicles to get through.
