A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we welcomed alums back to campus for our annual Alumni Luncheon. Our current 8th graders, who will be our newest alums, were also included in the event. There were graduates there from the class of 1944 to our speaker, Deneisha Washington, class of 2011. One of the highlights of the afternoon was our Kindergarten class performing for our guests. By the way, that class is the class of 2021! Many thanks to our Development team for putting the event together. Lynn Robinson and Caryn Fiedler were involved in every step of preparation—from designing the invitations to set up to welcoming our guests to clean-up. Of particular note, were the pictures, yearbooks, and artifacts that they collected and put out for our guests. I know they stirred up many pleasant memories.  Many thanks to the wonderful parents who volunteered in the kitchen, dining room, and greeting table.

Speaking of volunteers, kudos to Cheri Krebs and her helpers for arranging a week-long Book Fair. It opens on Sunday and will continue throughout the week. It is bigger and better than ever and has something for everyone. Check the schedule in today’s newsletter for times. Also, check out Mrs. Chambers’ blog on the Summer Reading Challenge. It is definitely a good idea to keep the kids reading during the summer months. The link to her blog is also in this newsletter.

On another note…..I am beginning to feel like a nagging mother these days as I try to remind everyone of all the forms and deadlines that are approaching. I only heard from two families regarding Volunteer Hours. Bills for $600 will be going out to those families we have not heard from. Please refer to last week’s Footnotes for a list of all items and due dates. In a few weeks we will be sending home the “Summer Packets” so there will be more things to fill out, including tuition contracts for next year. My advice is to try to stay on top of it all—is that possible??? Have a great three day weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

Second Graders Receive First Communion

Mrs. Witka asked the 2nd graders to reflect on why receiving communion is important or special. Here are a few of their answers.

Communion is special because you receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our savior.  When you get it, you have Jesus inside you.  It fills you up with God’s grace.

                       Violet Ashley

Receiving communion is special to me because I know I am receiving Jesus’ body and blood.

                       Charlie Black

I think communion is important because it makes your soul feel not so hungry.  Also, communion is Jesus Christ.  Another thing is that the bread is blessed by the priest.

                       Maxine Nasser-Ziayee

Why is getting First Holy Communion important?  Well, getting communion is very, very special.  Christ Jesus died for us and we’re receiving his body which washes away our sins.  Important?  Yes!

                       Elisa Andrews

Communion is special because Jesus is in us.  Also, we have an experience that the disciples had.  It shows respect to God and great love.

                       Mimi Baldwin

First Communion was special to me because I received the Body of Christ.  It was one of the holiest moments of my life!

                       Stella Schneider

Scholastic Book Fair Opens Sunday

Please Bring Flowers Monday for the May Crowning

During our Monday morning prayer service we will honor our Blessed Mother, Mary, with the May Crowning. Please send one freshly-picked flower from your yard or garden with your child. The May Crowning ceremony is a traditional devotion which occurs each year near Mother’s Day, reminding us of Mary’s love for Jesus and the love of all mothers for their children.

Lenten Rice Bowl Donations

Madeleine students collected $194.95 for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) during Lent. Thank you to all who gave during the Lenten Rice Bowl fundraiser! The money goes toward helping to feed hungry families, bring water to the thirsty, and empower the vulnerable. Watch the CRS Thank You video to find out how you can make a difference in global poverty year-round.

Counselor's Column

This week's topic: "Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety"

In elementary school, teachers spend ample time discussing the different types of bullying, their effects on others, and strategies needed to effectively handle bullying occurrences.  As the world turns towards technological advances, so do our kids. Now teachers and parents are faced with a whole new level of threat: cyber bullying and internet safety. Find out more in this week's Counselor's Column.

5th Grade Delivers 155 St. Michael's Lunches

Congratulations to the 5th grade for doing a bang up job bringing in lunches this week.  We collected and delivered 155 lunches to the volunteers at St. Michael’s and they were thrilled to receive our generous donation. The Madeleine is the only school that delivers lunches to the program and they are truly grateful for our commitment to serving the hungry.

St. Michael’s could use your help....

If any families are interested in making and delivering lunches over the summer, please contact St Michael’s Social Services, 503-228-0842.

The Madeleine Art Show

Please come celebrate your children's creativity Thursday, May 9th from 6:00-8:00pm.  Every student will have several pieces of his/her art on display—more than a thousand pieces of art will be on view! The Madeleine MUSE band and Kathleen Staub of Arpeggio Harps will also be performing while you enjoy the show.

Looking for that special Mother's Day gift? You can take home your kids' art with you after the Art Show just in time to frame it for Mom. Look for clipboards to sign out art starting at 7:50.

We still need volunteers on Monday for set-up and Friday to take down and sort art into student Portfolios so it can be prepared to go home at the end of the year.

Fundraiser for NW Mothers Milk Bank

Milk banks screen, process and dispense donated human milk that provides life-saving nourishment for babies whose own mothers cannot supply the milk they need. There are only 12 milk banks in the U.S., and the closest ones to our area are in San Jose, CA and Denver, CO. Volunteers for Northwest Mothers Milk Bank plan to open a Portland milk bank this summer. New Seasons Market is accepting donations at all locations, and on May 11th and 12th, when you buy chocolate cupcakes in the bakery section, they will donate all proceeds to the NW Mothers Milk Bank. Contact Madeleine parent and Northwest Mothers Milk Bank board member, Annette Magner, for more information. Annette_magner@msn.com
