A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Susan's column has been commandeered this week by Development Director, Lynn Robinson, who has a special invitation for all parent volunteers.

Parents Club Volunteer Celebration!

Wednesday, June 5, 6:30 pm

Parish Garden Courtyard (hopefully!)

In honor of all of our Parents Club volunteers, The Madeleine School Faculty and Staff cordially invite you to an end of year celebration complete with wine and appetizers. We are extremely grateful for all of the community service and fundraising hours you committed to the school this year. The Parents Club fundraisers grossed $271,000 and your dedication in the classrooms and at our community events enhanced your children’s’ educational experience in countless ways. We are especially thankful to those who devoted their time to leadership roles such as Parents Club Officers, Auction Chairs, Jogathon Chairs, Room Reps, School Advisory Council Members, and many, many other positions.

Please join us for a glass of cheer in your honor and in celebration of all of your hard work.

Please RSVP by Friday, May 31st to Lynn Robinson at lrobinson@themadeleine.edu or Angela Rosebrook at arosebrook@themadeleine.edu

With Gratitude,

Susan Steele and the entire Madeleine faculty and staff

We have so many gift items for everyone on your list: Barnes and Noble, Gap, Home Depot, Lowes, Powell's Books, Regal Cinema, Sears, Washman Auto Spa, Starbucks, Peets, McMenamins. Need a some quick dinner options? Come to the scrip desk and check out all of our restaurant and pizza gift cards. The Scrip Committee needs you for next year
Scrip Sales: Many of our beloved scrip sellers are leaving us this year as their children graduate! We are looking for a number of parents to sell scrip on Friday morning and Friday afternoons in the garden room, plus Monday-Thursday in the scrip office. Its a great way to meet other parents!
Scrip Coordinator: We need another co-coordinator to help with weekly sales and special occasion scrip sales for next year. You will be part of a team of parents who will be working to increase scrip program participation next year. If interested, contact Susan Steele, Joanne Deitz Thompson, or Anne Palmer.

Counselor's Column

This week's topic: "Fine Motor Skills"

Fine motor skills activities for children are the best way to ensure proper development and to promote the most functional use of a child's hands. Find out more in this week's Counselor's Column.

2nd Grade Delivers 151 St. Michael's Lunches

The second grade brought in 151 nutritious lunches this week.  The 8th graders helped load the car, and off we went to St. Michael's where they greeted us with grateful smiles.  The weather was wet and cold on Tuesday and men and women were lined up against the wall of St. Michael’s church ready for some hot soup and a packed sack lunch.  I know for certain, the guests at St. Michael’s were not disappointed!  Thank you second graders for working to hard to feed the hungry.

Join the Bridge Program to Welcome New Families

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school.  The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer has no more than three families to connect with over the summer and during the school year.  The expectation is that you will check in with them at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester.

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Caryn Fiedler at fiedler3fam@gmail.com.

Madeleine Begins Annual Fund Campaign

Did you know that tuition covers only 75% of the true cost of educating our students? Each year we must make up the additional 25% per student through fundraising activities. Beginning this year, we are asking our community to help establish a regular source of ongoing funding for our school: The Madeleine Annual Fund.

During the Annual Fund Campaign, we will ask everyone—families, alumni, parishioners, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends—to contribute. What is most important is your participation, not the amount you are able to give. Every level of support is valued and appreciated.

100% of your donation will be matched by the OCF Joseph E. Weston Public Foundation and 100% of your donation is tax deductible.

Check the Friday Folders for information about the Annual Fund Campaign, or download the Madeleine School Annual Fund FAQ.

The list includes upcoming events, deadlines, and reminders to put on your calendar. Download it here and save it on your computer or print it out and hang it on the refrigerator.

Farewell reception for Scott Baier

June 2 after 9:00 am Mass
Sadly, our intrepid seminarian, Scott Baier, is winding down his exceptional year of service at The Madeleine. Please mark your calendar to join us on June 2 in the Parish Hall for a sit-down breakfast in celebration of everything Scott has done for our parish.

Important changes—locks, events, background check requirements

All exterior door keylocks have been eliminated. The only way to enter our buildings now is by entering when the doors are programmed to be unlocked, or using a keyfob. If you need a keyfob, or a change to your existing keyfob, contact Kelly Johnson, Business Manager, kjohnson@themadeleine.edu.
All events held on parish premises need to be on the parish calendar. No exceptions. Keyfobs should not be used to enter for an unscheduled event. We examine reports from the door access system to make sure all access is authorized.
Background checks—All volunteers who work with children in our programs need to be properly background checked and receive Called to Protect training, which is required by the Archdiocese. No exceptions. If you need training, please contact Kelly Johnson or Tina Hanselman in the parish office. You can learn more about this by visiting www.archdpdx.org/cpo.

Mothers of Babies & Preschool Children

Come together on May 29, 10 am–noon in the Fireside Room. Thank you to all the mothers - and children - who joined our meeting in April. What a wonderful time to meet new friends, connect and grow. Many of us have experienced grief recently and we thought it would be healing to knit a prayer shawl. For the May 29th meeting, bring some large (size 9 or above) knitting needles (we will have extras if you don’t have any) and that’s it! No experience necessary! Invite friends who are mothers with pre-school children. Please bring your children (toys and snacks provided)!
Call or text Deborah Naugler, 503.713.3068 or Sr. Cecilia, 503.284.7286 (any day) or 503.281.5777 (Tues. or Thurs.) with any questions.

The Knights take your returnable cans and bottles, and your newspapers, and use the proceeds to support their charitable works.
