Light Green Tips

Limit the plastics:  BPA in plastics can be very toxic and that plastic bags and disposable water bottles produce large problems for the landfills.  Exposing your children to alternatives at a young age will make choosing green products a natural decision, rather than a forced one.  A great example is to use a reusable water bottle combined with a reusable bag to carry lunch to school.  This will ensure they get a healthy lunch from home, limit BPA exposure and reduce landfill waste at the same time. A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Another Catholic Schools Week has come and gone. We had a great time celebrating our community—students, parents, staff, and our beloved pastor, Fr. Mike. Many thanks to all the people who participated in Sunday Mass, provided food for the Teacher Appreciation luncheon, recognized the staff with gifts, etc. and generally added to the festivities. For me, it has been such a gift to have had Catholic education in my life—as a student, as a parent, and for the past twenty years as an educator. Working with parents and teachers to form children in their faith life and nurture their academic development is a privilege that sometimes gets lost in the daily routine of running a school. Catholic Schools Week does a wonderful job of reminding me that I have the best job in the world!

Don’t forget about our school Open House coming up next Monday and Tuesday. If you know of anyone who is interested in The Madeleine, be sure to encourage them to check us out.

Also, don’t forget about the Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday from 5-9. Best deal in town with great food, great prices, and great company. Have a wonderful weekend.

If you would like to apply for tuition assistance, the Archdiocese will be using the same company to process requests as in the past few years. Applications can be found online at www.factstuitionaid.com. Supporting documents need to be mailed in after the application has been submitted. There are flyers outside the school office to explain the process. Deadline for consideration is April 3rd.

Sincerely,

Susan

Thank You Parents Club!

Thank you to the Parents Club and all Madeleine parents for the delicious lunch on Monday and all the gifts of appreciation this week. We are truly blessed with a wonderful community of families and students here at The Madeleine.

What Is Outdoor School?

Every year, Madeleine 6th graders spend a week at Outdoor School on the Sandy River where they study the ecosystem of a multi-acre piece of land —their outdoor "classroom"—with access to a stream or lake, varieties of trees, shrubs, plants, animals and birds. Read more about why Outdoor School is an important part of our 6th graders' experience here.

Our 6th graders will be at Outdoor School this year from April 7-12, and we need your help to get them there.

The 6th grade class is offering a chance to "Flock a Friend." For $20, you can have a flock of pink flamingos placed in a friend's front yard. And for $25, you can purchase "Anti-Flocking Insurance" to keep your own yard free of flamingoes! Download the "Flock a Friend" order form, and "Anti-Flocking Insurance" form, and bring them to the school office along with your payment to get involved with this "fun"-raiser.

8th Grade Delivers 270 St. Michael's Lunches

Hurray for the 8th Grade, they brought in 270 lunches today!  Not only that, but Tom Hughes and family delivered many gallons of homemade chili to the kitchen at St. Michael’s.  So, on this very rainy January day, all those in need of food will be welcomed   into St. Michael’s dining hall with a steaming bowl of hot chili and a nutritious sack lunch, compliments of The Madeleine.  Great work 8th graders and a big thank you to all the parents who made this happen.

Reading Fair at University of Portland

On February 24, from 11:00am - 3:00pm, the University of Portland School of Education will host a Reading Fair for Pre-K to Middle School students. Find out more here.

Archbishop's Catholic Appeal begins February 9-10

Next weekend, February 9-10, is Commitment Weekend for the 2013 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. During Mass we will watch a video from Archbishop Vlazny about the Appeal. If you received a personalized commitment card in the mail please bring it to Mass with you as we join together to support our Catholic Church in western Oregon. If you did not receive a commitment card in the mail pledge envelopes will be available during Mass. Read more....

Living the Eucharist signups this weekend

A few groups still openNot too late to sign up
Living the Eucharist is a program our parish is participating in during Lent which provides us with opportunities to grow in our faith through learning more about the Eucharist, participating more actively in Mass, and Living the Eucharist each day as disciples of Jesus.
Last year, more than 100 people participated in 16 small groups parish wide. This year, we have a great group of facilitators and a compelling program....now all we need is you! A few groups still have space—so to signup, contact Scott Baier, 503-281-5777 ext. 22.

Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample named new Archbishop

On Tuesday, the Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed the Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample of the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan, to be the eleventh Archbishop of Portland in Oregon. He will succeed Archbishop John G. Vlazny who is retiring at age 75. Read more....

CYO lost and found to be cleared at end of January

The CYO lost and found has grown considerably and unfortunately has been frequently dumped all over the gym floor.
If you have lost anything, please check the lost and found as soon as possible as we will donate any remaining items. We plan to donate any lost and found items at the end of the month. If you need to retrieve anything, please do it as soon as possible.

Abandoned vehicles in the school or parish parking lots?

The parish office will be tagging any unknown vehicles parked on our premises without permission and asking them to contact the office. We need to be advised of anyone parking in our lots for any reason other than an official parish or school event.
We may need to do parking lot maintenance, or we may have a special event, or there may be an emergency or other unforeseen event which requires us to contact the owner. If you or someone you know has been routinely parking for reasons other than official business or events, please have them contact Kelly Johnson, Business Manager at kjohnson@themadeleine.edu.We will report all abandoned vehicles or suspicious activity. We make every attempt to be welcoming but also maintain our vigilance towards safety. If you see a vehicle you think is suspicious, please let us know.
in other news: We have 24 fire extinguishers located throughout the campus. They are inspected annually. And, so you can sleep soundly tonight, these inspections are up-to-date.

An open letter from Father Mike:

I am writing today to provide you with an update on the issue of the security lights currently installed on our parish and school property along 23rd Avenue. You may have heard conversations, read articles, or even received notices from the City of Portland on this subject...

Mardi Gras volunteers needed!

Our second annual Mardi Gras celebration is coming up in a hurry and, not surprisingly, we could use some volunteers to help make it a success.
We need volunteers in all areas, including setup, cleanup, serving during the event and people to help in the Family Funzone kids’ area in the gym. Also, since we cannot have a bouncy house this year (Archdiocesan ruling), we’re looking for some other great ideas for kids. So, if you can volunteer, or have great kids’ ideas, contact Janeen Reilly Allred 503-819-2526 or janeenreilly13@gmail.com. BONUS: Central Catholic students can earn service hours by working the event!

Next Kids’ Night In scheduled for March 2—Just $5.

Information & signup form at www.themadeleine.edu/faithformation

We have a date...now you parents can have one, too! Saturday, March 2 is the next episode of Kids’ Night In. It’s a great night of food, fun, and games and learning for kids Kindergarten through 5th Grade.
Parents will drop kids off at the Parish Hall after 5:00 pm Mass, then pick them up at 8:15. You can stay if you want, or....you can have a Parents’ Night Out!
Dinner, in the form of pizza, will be provided, and the evening will include dessert in the form of ice cream or other treat. All this, for just $5! Much less expensive, and more educational, than a couple hours of babysitting, right?
Volunteers needed: kids & adults
We could use some more volunteers—about 4 more adults and a few more teens, 8th Grade and older to help with setup, cleanup and supervision. No prior knowledge or training needed, except adults need to be current on your Call to Protect.
