Light Green Tips

Take the bus or carpool with a friend! Public transit is efficient and the City of Portland offers free passes to students.  This reduces air pollution by limiting the amount of emissions produced by burning fossil fuels.  It also helps save money by reducing your family’s annual fuel cost.

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents,

It seems like this school year is just getting started, but the calendar says we need to start planning for the 2013-2014 year. Our Open House activities, Parent Information Night and Family Tours, are just four weeks away. In order for us to begin, we need an accurate count of how many students will be returning next year. Please take a moment to fill out the Re-registration Form and send it to the office if you are planning on returning. The book/registration fee is not due until the end of the month, but we would like the form back ASAP. Thanks so much for your prompt attention. Also, please remember that "word of mouth" is the best marketing we have. If you know someone who might be interested in joining The Madeleine community, be sure to tell them about us. New Parent Information night is Feb. 4th at 7:00 and Family Tours on the next day from 10-1. Spread the word!

News from the Art Room

Happy New Year to everyone in our Madeleine Family! Once again the Art Room is in full swing.  Large projects from before Christmas are receiving their finishing touches and new art experiences are under way.  New to View in the halls this week includes Sixth grade's gold and black Egyptian motifs.  Students were challenged to use gold foil and black scratch board and an assortment of tools to create images that feature a variety of lines, contrast and good use of space.  Seventh grade's Optical Illusion Tornadoes are a dizzying display of line, analogous colors, and sense of movement and form.  Several grades are building their skills with watercolors and are completing technique samplers as a foundation for future paintings, and others are celebrating the unique beauty of winter with snowy creations.

Art and the Auction

I have made the first few purchases with the funds from November's amazingly generous auction paddle raise.  Hardworking but worn out paint brushes will be retired as sets of new, comfort grip, multipurpose brushes debut.  Additionally, 30 tiny detail brushes join the lineup.  A class set of metal scratch board tips have been added to the existing wooden tools.  Several cool new paints, finishes, and papers will see action soon.   Stay tuned for updates and thank you for your auction donations!

Art Around Portland

Portland Art Museum goes digital!  Did you know that only 5% of the Museum's collection are ever on view?  P.A.M. has begun the huge task of documenting its artwork with high resolution digital photography.  Soon people around the world and around the corner will be able to see our treasures, though there is certainly nothing to compare with an in-person visit. Two photographers have been working tirelessly since March.  Next on their list is documenting the 6,000 pieces of Native American art.

Stunning photography exhibit at OMSI on view through February 10th  ---  Simply Beautiful

“Take a journey through variations on the universal theme of beauty. More than 50 images feature the work of some of the most famous National Geographic photographers. Experience the visual delight of stunning landscapes and magnificent wildlife to fascinating people and quaint locales. Simply Beautiful illustrates how we can find beauty, often overlooked, in nearly everything.” Free to OMSI members, included in the price of OMSI admission – yet another great reason to visit OMSI.

“Chagall For Children” at the Portland Children's Museum features 14 reproductions of Marc Chagall's most famous paintings, each accompanied with an audio recording and interactive component.  Free with Museum  admission.  Now through January 21st.

Free admission to Lan Su Chinese Garden  Everything about this “Garden of Awakening Orchids” is art brought to life.  Exquisite, symbolic, and poetic down to the smallest detail, the garden is free January 5th through 12th in celebration of the Year of the Snake. 3rd and Everett St. 503-228-8131

Are you tech savvy?  I would love to create a site where families could see their artwork posted on a regular basis.   Can you help?  If you are interested, please let me know.

A special thanks to the Anctil family for the big box of art supplies!

Are you taking advantage of your employer’s matching gift benefit?

Many companies offer matching gift benefits to their employees. For every dollar you donate to the charity of your choice, your employer may match 100% up to a certain annual amount. Check with your Human Resources department for details or contact Lynn Robinson, Development Director, at lrobinson@themadeleine.edu.

Development Office needs a new printer

Our current machine is on a heavy paper diet recently, munching away on our letterhead. Do you have a gently used or new all-in-one printer/scanner/copier you are able to donate to the school? Thank you for your consideration!

The second grade class outdid themselves this week and brought in 301 delicious lunches.  One family got very busy and packed 104 lunches with tasty meat sandwiches. The volunteers at St Michael’s were shocked to receive so many lunches and very grateful for our generous delivery.  Great Job 2nd Graders!

All Ministers of Hospitality, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Music Ministers and Sacristans are requested to attend. Next Kids’ Night In scheduled for March 2
Just $5. Information & signup form at www.themadeleine.edu/faithformation
We have a date...now you parents can have one, too! Saturday, March 2 is the next episode of Kids’ Night In. It’s a great night of food, fun, and games for kids Kindergarten through 5th Grade...and some learning, too. More details to come.
Volunteers needed: kids & adults
We could use some more volunteers—about 4 more adults and a few more teens, 8th Grade and older to help with setup, cleanup and supervision. No prior knowledge or training needed, except adults need to be current on your Call to Protect.

About those doors...use the right one!
Installed this summer was an access control system throughout the campus, which unlocks doors with special key fob sensors, or by a preset schedule for events. If you’re here for a scheduled event, simply pull on the right-side door for entry. (Many people are pulling the locked left-side door repeatedly, causing unnecessary strain on the doors.) Please let the people in your group activities know this is the proper way to enter the doors for their events.
If you have been issued a fob sensor to unlock doors, and it is not working properly, please contact Kelly Johnson, Business Manager, kjohnson@themadeleine.edu.
Father Mike, Susan Steele and the entire staff and faculty of the parish and school, hold safety as our top priority. We are always looking for ways to continually improve our security and safety. We are formulating safety procedures that we will issue with facilities request forms. Your input is always welcome.
