Light Green Tips

Unplug. Video games, computers and TVs use energy - even when turned off. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 75% of electricity used to power electronics in the average home is consumed by products that are switched off. So unplug - literally! Go electronics free and take a walk, read a book or hit the local park or playground instead.

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to the final months of the ’12-’13 school year. I hope your Spring Break was a time for family, relaxation, rest, and Easter celebrations. That taste of spring weather over the Easter weekend was just what I needed to “recharge” for the coming weeks.

Next week we have an unusual early dismissal. The Archdiocese has scheduled a half-day inservice on Wednesday. The faculty will be going to Marshall High School to work on curriculum maps for Social Studies. It is a bit out of the ordinary to have an early dismissal in the middle of the week, but that is the plan. A final work session is also planned in May.

In today’s Footnotes is the Parish Affiliation Form for the next school year. As you know those families who are registered and active in a parish may request a subsidy to lower their tuition rate. We are so blessed to be a part of a parish that financially supports a Catholic school. We have operated for over 100 years as an active ministry of The Madeleine Church. All of the Madeleine parishioners are stakeholders in this school community. Their generosity has helped us build an excellent educational program,  nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of all students.

If you would like to request the “in-parish” rate, you need to fill out the Parish Affiliation Form and give it to Fr. Mike (or your parish priest if you are registered in another parish) for approval. Click here to download the form. These forms are due back to the parish office by April 30th. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

Have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Susan

Kindergarten Delivers 249 St. Michael's Lunches

Hats off to the Kindergarteners who brought in 249 lunches this week.  That’s not an easy thing to remember after a long spring break and a festive Easter weekend.  The volunteers at St. Michael’s loved the beautifully decorated lunch bags and notes from the children.  Nice work, Madeleine!

The Art Show is Coming! Volunteers Needed

The big set up day is Monday, May 6th starting at 8:00 a.m.

Unlike previous years, I am teaching on Mondays and will definitely need your help.  Any amount of time you can contribute will be greatly appreciated. No artistic experience required!

Jobs include: making loops of tape to stick work to the wall, mounting art on black paper (this one can be done starting today; packets of art can be signed out and worked on at home), and arranging mounted art on the walls.

Friday May 9th more help will be needed taking art down, and sorting it into student portfolios.

Thank you!

Mrs. Galash

Father Daughter Dance April 20th

All you parents of daughters, pull your disco attire out of the closet and get ready for the Father Daughter Dance Saturday, April 20th at 7:00pm in the Parish Hall.

We’ll have a live DJ, hula hoop and limbo contests, a best disco costume contest, and maybe a dance-off. We'll be serving plenty of snacks (i.e., sugar) to keep you dancing, and have non-alcoholic drinks available.

Sign up now in the office. No actual dancing skills required!

Read to the Dogs at Local Libraries

Does your child love dogs? The Albina and Hollywood libraries are signing up kids to build reading skills and confidence by reading aloud to a trained therapy dog.

School Advisory Council Nominations for Next Year

Are you interested in helping to shape the direction of our school? Then, we need you! The Madeleine School Advisory Council has three positions (3-year terms) that need to be filled. Download the nomination form here, and return it to the office by Thursday, May 2nd.

Thank you, Fontaine and Welcome, Caryn Fiedler!

Change is good and exciting but it can also be a little sad. Over the past 1 1/2 years Fontaine has been a creative and vibrant addition to the development office. Working approximately 15 hours a week, she helped update our marketing and communication tools for the school and we would not have the first two phases of the Playground for All Players Project complete without her talent for volunteer coordination and attention to detail.

Recently, Fontaine started working full-time as a project manager for a technical marketing firm. Unfortunately she needs to decrease her hours at The Madeleine. She will continue to work about 5 hours per week until July 1 doing the weekly Friday Footnotes.  Luckily, Caryn Fiedler has agreed to step in for 10 hours a week and help coordinate the Alumni Luncheon and kick-off a comprehensive Annual Fund Campaign. Many more details to follow!

Caryn was a member of SAC from 2009-2012 and was instrumental in creating the current 5 year plan for marketing and development. She created the Parents Club position of "New Family Coordinator" and, recently, she did a fabulous job coordinating all of the volunteers for a very successful Open House.

Please welcome Caryn when you see her and say thank you to Fontaine for her dedication to the school. We will miss having Fontaine around more, but we are very grateful to have her talents for the next few months!
