A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week, my column will be on a subject you’ve heard lots and lots about: The Old Church Project. There’s a reason you’ve heard so much about it: it’s vitally important to our parish and to our school.
One of the questions we hear from parents is, “How will this project benefit the school? How will it benefit my child(ren)?”
Let’s start with this: Even if your child never sets foot in The Old Church, the meeting spaces, balcony spaces or other areas being created, the cost of direct and indirect benefits to our students--your child(ren)--is at least $770,000.
Where does that $770,000 go?
- Upgraded fire suppression sprinklers throughout the school including an entire new system in the North wing (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade wing)
- Remodeled middle school/gymnasium bathrooms, which, aside from looking better, will provide increased privacy for students changing clothes for PE class.
- School security upgrades, including upgraded alarms, cameras, lighting and more.
- Required by the city, installation of a new EV/AC (Emergency Voice Alarm Communications) system throughout the entire school and Parish Hall complex. This provides emergency notifications for fire, lockdown/lockout, natural disaster and all other kinds of emergencies.
- Mandated by the city, we are installing 60 new bike racks and a bike parking structure, plus landscaping upgrades to the “school” end of campus, to include trees, bushes and parking lot islands, plus irrigation to support all the new plantings.
- Air conditioning in the Parish Hall and Fireside Room, so your children can eat lunch, attend assemblies and events, plays and more in comfort…no matter the weather.
- A new elevator on the south end of Middle School.
- Three-phase electrical service upgrade for use by the old elevator, the new elevator and the air-conditioning upgrade.
- Asbestos and lead abatement in conjunction with the projects above.
But your child(ren) WILL use in The Old Church. She/he/they will use the Old Church itself, the meeting rooms and the balcony/gallery area for a variety of things, including:
- Monday morning prayer/assembly
- Lectures, outside speakers and presentations
- Expansion of the school music program to include band instruments and more
- Space for performances such as Middle School Musical, Go West, Portland the Musical and more
- Class retreats, graduation activities
- Space that could be used for group projects, Battle of the Books, and much more
Please, support this project to the best of your ability and respond as soon as possible. I know that once school ends, your minds will be far from The Madeleine, but construction will begin immediately after school lets out.
- If you have received a call or email from a School Gifts Committee representative, do them the courtesy of returning the call or email.
- If you have a pledge card, fill it out today and return it.
- If you don’t have a pledge card, pick one up at the parish or school office.
- Additional school-specific details also available at www.OldChurchProject.com/school
- If you have questions on the project, contact me or Father Mike, or our Business Manager, James Wurzer.
With gratitude,
Susan

Staff Changes
Someone once said that the only thing constant in life is change. Change is sometimes sad, or disconcerting, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and new experiences. There will be some changes in our staff next year, and we will be saying goodbye and hello to a few people.
Paula Miller, our 6th grade teacher, will be joining our Learning Support Team. With two young children at home, teaching full time was a stress on her family. Instead she will work two days a week with a variety of students. She will also continue coaching the speech team and mentoring the new 6th grade teacher, Kaytlyn Grant. Kaytlyn is coming to us from the Battle Ground school district and is eager to teach in a Catholic setting. She is an active member of St. Patrick’s parish, working especially with the RCIA. Welcome, Kaytlyn.
Family and career obligations are also part of the decision for Kelley Groves to say goodbye. She has done a wonderful job teaching art to our students, but the responsibilities of the job were not in balance with her other obligations. We will miss her and are so appreciative of all the knowledge and skills that she presented this year. Taking her place next year will be Ingrid Parmeter. Ingrid was enthusiastically recommended by Carolyn Ullman, our school counselor. Ingrid also has a degree in English Language Arts and has taught at the secondary level. She is an active member of St. Andrew Parish and is excited about the new position. Welcome, Ingrid.
Just a Few Reminders....
Please remember that your child will not receive his/her report card if there are any outstanding bills (tuition, library, volunteer hours, scrip).

News from your School Advisory Council (SAC)
Goodbye to 3 senior members; Hello to 3 new members
Thank you to the members of School Advisory Council who are finishing their terms this year: Eric Anctil, Lucas Newman and Tim Resch. Their contributions during the last three years were greatly appreciated, and they will be missed.
At the same time we would like to welcome our new members: Jeff Allen, Brian Cratsenberg, and Jennifer Johnson! They have been chosen to serve three year terms. We had many excellent applicants this year, and thanks to everyone who threw their hat in the ring.
Each year we have three openings, so please consider applying next year if you are interested. SAC is a great way to get involved in the formation of policy for the school and to support the pastor, administration, and staff.

Help Welcome New Families
to The Madeleine School
The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.
Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:
- New Parents Potluck in September (approx. two hours)
- Open House in February (approx. two hours)
- School Tours in February (approx. two hours)
If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.
Make Some Memories for the Kids!
Our kiddos love the events throughout the year that make Madeleine unique. We are looking for some parents to lead a team of volunteers to carry out the following events.
Please contact Alisa Pyszka at alisa.pyszka@gmail.com if you are interested.
Mardi Gras Kids Zone - Coordinate volunteers for the kids school carnival filled with games and prizes and a total blast for the kids.
Book Fair - Coordinate a team for this important event (twice a year) to raise money for our library and provide books for the kids.

Bring in Your Used Markers
The Madeleine is putting the MAGIC into Magic markers with a very cool program at our school. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing new program devised to turn used markers into energy!
We will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. The markers will be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
If it feels wrong throwing the dead / dying markers in the trash ... and it is equally annoying to have useless markers hanging around - then this is just what you have been waiting for!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands. The drop-off boxes will be located in the entry way starting Monday June 4th, up until the last day of school.
And just like that - we can magically keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.
Thanks so much!
Kris Thompson & Kelley Groves

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!
If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and books and games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.
The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!
