A Note from Susan
Editor's Note: Susan is away at a principals' meeting, so this week's column is written by Sara Dillon, The Madeleine's 1st grade teacher.
This year I have been serving as one of the adult leaders in my parish’s confirmation group. Two weeks ago we had the opportunity to volunteer at NightStrike, which is an organization that ministers to the homeless every Thursday night under the Burnside Bridge.
As we were getting settled for orientation, a young man identified as a volunteer at the organization was asked to address all the volunteers and tell “his story.” He explained that several years ago he was homeless and addicted to drugs. He was on the waterfront one day when someone approached the group and asked if they were hungry. He was starving so he replied, “Yes!” The person handed out lunches and kept walking.
He was very surprised by the act of kindness and quickly began asking those around him, “Who was that?” Without skipping a beat, everyone agreed that it was truly Jesus. This young man was so moved by the act of kindness and the sincerity of his friends that he knew he needed to change. He checked into rehab the next day and has been sober for three years. He credits that one lunch for saving his life.
It’s entirely possible that lunch could have originated from The Madeleine. A lunch YOU made three years ago could have been the one that saved his life! It was a powerful reminder how a simple act of kindness can be transformative.
Thank you for all you do through our various service projects to help those in need. From the lunches you make on Tuesdays, to Pennies for the Poor, to Mugs for Hugs and so much more . . . it all truly makes a difference!
Sincerely,
Sara Dillon

Campaign Kickoff Weekend
This weekend marks the official launch to The Madeleine Old Church Project Capital Campaign—a major parish effort to fund renovations and upgrades needed for today and for the next century.
By the end of next week, every parish and school family will have received in the mail a packet of materials about our campaign. A case statement booklet is enclosed, along with a letter from Fr. Mike requesting a pledge to the effort. The case statement provides an in depth look at the need, the projects, and the cost.
Over the coming weeks, our team of volunteers will be reaching out to families to discuss the campaign, answer questions and seek your support. Due to our limited numbers of volunteers, we may not be able to personally contact every family – but we do hope that all families will choose to participate in this important campaign.
We want to start the campaign by thanking the dozens of volunteers who are stepping up in leadership roles. Without them, we would be unable to conduct this campaign.
Please visit www.OldChurchProject.com/news to read this complete story.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!
We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.
Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)
Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.
Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
Contributing to Friday Footnotes
If you have information to contribute to Friday Footnotes, please e-mail the copy exactly as you would like it to appear in a Word document to: fridayfootnotes@themadeleine.edu. Deadline is Wednesday at 5pm, or Tuesday at 5pm if there is no school on Friday.
