A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

What an event-filled seven days! Jogathon last Friday, K103 tribute to Mrs. Schneider on Monday, Book Fair all week, Grandparents Tea and Art Show on Thursday, three performances of the middle school musical Beauty and the Beast, and First Communion on Sunday. Throw in Parents Club and School Advisory Council meetings…. I think I am going to sleep all weekend.

These events don’t just happen without lots of planning and organizing. Many thanks to (in no particular order) Anne Gaber and all the Tea volunteers, Jen Tadjedin and Ali McPhee and the Book Fair salespeople, Shelby Walker, Kelsi Charlesworth plus their Jogathon helpers, the many parents who matted art and hung the student work, and a special shout out to 7th graders Amelie H. and Evelyn C. for outstanding work on costuming for the musical. We just couldn’t provide all these wonderful activities without your gifts of time and talent.

Summer Packets

Mrs. Rosebrook is sending home the “summer packet” with more forms to fill out than should be allowed, and I think you are going to need the entire weekend to complete them! That is a slight exaggeration, but there is some truth to it. However, please have pity on Angela who has to sort and record all the information. Please, please, please, take some time and fill out the forms and return them as soon as possible. I don’t want Angela to be here until July processing.

Let me offer an incentive. The first 20 people who put their completed packet in Angela’s hands will get a little gift card to Starbucks. Thanks so much for your prompt response.

Enjoy your weekend.

Susan

May 21 - 25

This coming week, May 21 to May 25, The Madeleine will be raising money for Heifer International, an organization that works in developing nations to help end the cycle of poverty. They train communities and families in sustainable farming and provide livestock and other animals like pigs, cows, chickens, and bees to help provide people with a source of income.

We will have different kinds of pins available for those who participate.

Have fun collecting pins and don’t forget to bring in money to support Heifer International!

K103

Mrs. Schneider Receives Award for K103 Educator of the Week

Many months ago, Catherine Glavan nominated Mrs. Schneider for K103 Educator of the Week. Unsurprisingly to all of us who know and love her, Mrs. Schneider was chosen for this honor. Here’s what Catherine wrote:

“All three of my children have had Mrs. Schneider as a kindergarten teacher. Our oldest is a precocious reader, and Mrs. Schneider encouraged and inspired her. Our middle child is mellow and reserved, and she engaged his curiosity. This year Mrs. Schneider has our youngest child, and under Mrs. Schneider's skillful watch he is also encouraged, inspired, and engaged. The job is different this year for Mrs. Schneider; our youngest son has Down Syndrome. Mrs. Schneider has read extra articles and incorporated new teaching techniques to best suit his needs, while still serving the rest of the class. She is talented, giving, and patient, and we as parents are inspired by her daily, just as her students are.”

Thanks to this wonderful nomination letter, Mrs. Schneider has been busy for the past few weeks being showered with accolades, including attending a reception for all of the teachers who won Educator of the Week for this school year. This past Monday, a program representative visited The Madeleine and attended our Monday Morning Prayer Service in order to present Mrs. Schneider with her official Crystal Apple Award and other prizes.

LS in Kyoung teacherCongratulations, again, Mrs. Schneider. We are all very happy for you and honored to have had you play such an important part in our children’s lives.

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

safetyTraffic Safety at Parking Lot Entrances

Please be careful!

We received an angry letter from a bicycle commuter this week calling us to task for “extremely unsafe and careless driving habits” around our parking lot entrances.

Please read it, then ask yourself if you’re being careful when when you drop off or pick up your children. We need to be good neighbors, and driving safely is a big part of that. We realize that our parking entrances pose a unique driving situation, but please slow downlook for bicyclists and pedestrians, and use your signals.

“...I'd like to call your attention to the fact that many parents at the school practice extremely unsafe and careless driving habits that will almost certainly one day lead to an accident if not a fatality. I come down Klickitat towards downtown. I have noticed for a long time that parents turn very quickly and suddenly from 24th onto Klickitat to enter the school parking lot, and then from there they either go right or left into the two school parking lots. Nobody EVER signals or checks around them to see if there is any other traffic coming. I can count in double digits the number of times that a parent has cut me off and nearly hit me...”

St. Stephen's Lunch Programlunches

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

church Your "To-Do" List: Turn in Pledge Card

Are you a list maker? If you are, please add one more task to your “To-Do List” this week – Make my campaign pledge and turn in the card to the parish office.

We are truly grateful for the 140 families who have made their commitments to The Madeleine Old Church Project Capital Campaign. With their sacrificial support, gifts and pledges now total nearly $1.6 million.

This means we are 80% of goal of meeting the $1 million challenge gift from parishioner Howard Hedinger. The parish must raise $2 million to earn the $1 million challenge gift. Help us meet the challenge by June 1.

phonepledge

To make your pledge, respond when a campaign volunteer contacts you. We have more than 70 dedicated volunteers reaching out to parish and school families. They are more than happy to discuss the campaign, answer questions, and in some cases, deliver your pledge card needed to make your sacrificial commitment official.

If you have your pledge card in hand, please complete it and turn it in.

If you have yet to receive a pledge card, please contact campaign director John Dillin at 503-799-5796, or stop by the rectory to pick up a card and reply envelope.

Visit the campaign website at www.oldchurchproject.com to learn more about project details and the variety of ways to make a pledge or gift. Gifts to the campaign are tax deductible.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

screenWe are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
