November 9, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

November is traditionally the month that we remember to be grateful for all that is good in our lives. And we have so much to be grateful for here in our Madeleine community.

Many thanks to the wonderful parents who fed our teachers during Parent Teacher conferences. We had a variety of delicious soups, sweets, pasta, beverages, etc. that kept us in good spirits during the long days.

Many thanks for the incredible brown bag lunches prepared for St. Michael/St. Stephen each Tuesday. Rumor has it that Kdgn hit a record this week with over 400 delivered!

Many thanks to all the people who made our annual Auction an incredible success. To Caryn and Rich in the Development Office for their behind the scene support of all aspects of the Auction. To the sub-chairs and “worker bees” who diligently fulfilled their tasks for a seamless event. To our Auction Chairs for their vision and hours of planning and organizing. Kudos to Cathy, Andrea, Matt, Jim, Stephanie, Jason and Tim for a superlative job! (Proceeds are still being tallied, but you can get some preliminary numbers below in the newsletter.) We are a blessed community and we have much to be thankful for.

On another note……..

With the return of cold weather and the first hint of snow, it is timely to review what we do if a storm hits. All you need to remember is that we follow Portland Public Schools in weather-related decisions. If they cancel school, we cancel school. If they call a 2-hour late start, we have a 2-hour late start. Our morning YDP before school program would start at 9:30, instead of 7:30, and our doors would open at 10:15, instead of 8:15. The only discrepancy to this involves our students who have Spanish at 7:30. Their class is cancelled for the day because the Spanish teachers are at other schools at 9:30. If an afternoon storm is approaching, PPS has been known to call an early dismissal. We would follow that directive, too.

We are also using a new app called Remind, which will send a text to your phone regarding important information including closures. If you are not signed up for Remind, here's all you need to do to receive text alerts from the school for weather issues and closures:

So now let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…..

Enjoy your three day weekend.

                                                                 Sincerely,

                                                                  Susan

Overall Auction Results

Havana Nights, the 2017 Madeleine Auction, brought some Carribean warmth to the rainy northwest with more than 270 auction guests bringing both a spirit of community and a generous attitude to the evening.

Thank you to everyone who worked, attended, donated or prayed to make this evening amazing. And a special thanks to our amazing auction chairs Cathy Armstrong, Jim Doherty, Andrea and Matt Drapcho, Tim Resch, and Jason and Stephanie Richmond.

While the final numbers are still being tabulated, it’s safe to say that our auction guests were overwhelming in their generosity. Be sure to read upcoming editions of Friday Footnotes for the grand announcement of how much we raised for our kids.

Paddle Raise Results

$45,900 raised for The Commons

$35,200 raised for Puerto Rico

commons

As most of you know, we had two paddle raises this year at the auction. "Making the Commons Less Common" is now a reality thanks to the generosity of everyone who raised their paddle for this year's Paddle Raise, which raised $45,900 in restricted funds to provide a facelift for The Commons!

Planning efforts are underway, to create a lively, engaging learning space that kids are excited to be in, including built-in cubbies for storing coats, attractive built-in shelving for science and art projects, a larger, more colorful area rug for the music room and comfortable, modular furniture for student collarboration during the day and soft seating areas for YDP kids to use in the afternoon. Stay tuned!

$35,200 Raised for Puerto Rico

In addition to the money raised to support our own school and students, auction attendees donated to support people they have never met. From one Catholic Community to another. From one with plenty, to another in dire need.

The response was so great, we are now giving everyone an opportunity to participate. Click on the link below to read a description of “The Madeleine {hearts} Puerto Rico," then go to www.themadeleine.edu/puerto-rico to donate.

Thank you to Dunetchka Oterro Serrano and Cathy Armstrong for their persistent and selfless leadership on this unprecedented appeal.

artNews from the Art Room

We started off the year with a variety of projects and art media...from colored pencils to markers to watercolors to origami to oil pastels...depending which class your student is in, we have all been trying out different materials and learning how to use them to showcase our creativity. Classes have been exploring Color, Line and Shape. Come down and check out a few projects on bulletin boards near the Library and Art Room. We are now moving into Post Impressionism with our artist-of-the-month, Vincent van Gogh.

Attention Middle School students: the Art Room will now be open on TUESDAYS from 12:15pm-12:45pm. This is time for students who may want to come in and finish or catch up to a class assignment, or to work on a free choice art project.

On a final note, a reminder to have your child bring an art smock or old t-shirt to keep in their classroom. Some of our materials are messier than others and it is great to have a smock available to protect our clothing.

Happy November!

Mrs. Groves

lunchesSt. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

St. Stephen’s lunch program was the beneficiary of your generosity these last few weeks. With 2nd grade bringing in 225 lunches, and then the 1st grade arriving with 189 lunches, and then the Kindergarten brought in (drum roll please) 412 lunches finishing up Round One (8th – K) for a whopping 2,240 lunches. Simply astounding! The best yet. Eighth grade you are up next.

A special shout out to Kindergarteners Marcel and Laurel who had a “Lunch Date” and brought in 120 lunches this week. What a great idea. Thank you!

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

We have a few items still available for your purchasing pleasure from our recently completed Madeleine Uncorked wine tasting celebration. Order online at www.themadeleine.edu/uncorked

  • Luxury Suite: Blazers vs. Magic—Here’s your chance to see the Blazers from the beautiful Pacific Office Automation luxury suite in the Moda Center. Blazers vs. Magic. Ticket includes game admission and seating, and light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages in the luxury suite. $75 per person, November 15, 7:00 pm
