A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so happy to be piloting a new aspect of our Madeleine music program. Maria Manzo, our parish music director, is partnering with Cary Pederson, our school music teacher, to develop the vocal skills of our intermediate and middle school students, enhancing the Archdiocesan music curriculum. Maria was so gracious to step in last year to provide the music for our school Masses. It is exciting to see this collaboration continue this year with the formation of three school choirs. The 3rd and 4th graders are in a Primary Choir. The 5th and 6th graders participate in the Intermediate Choir. The 7th and 8th graders form the Senior Choir.

Mr. Pederson will be responsible for presenting the Archdiocesan music curriculum, which encompasses topics such as music notation, terminology, rhythm, composition, musical instruments, history, and culture. Dr. Manzo will use her expertise and experience with choral music to develop the students’ singing voices. This is a unique program and opportunity for our students. Do we have some kinks to work out…..Sure! Do we have some challenges to overcome…….you bet! But we are committed to a music program of excellence and achievement.

In addition to their weekly music classes and Thursday liturgy, the choirs will have opportunities to perform for our parishioners and at off campus events. Right now we have scheduled the Primary Choir to sing at the 10:00 Mass on October 22. Details of this liturgy will be emailed to the 3rd and 4th grade parents next week, but mark your calendars now. You won’t want to miss it! Stay tuned for future performances for our other choirs.

Auction Volunteer Jobs

As you all know by now, each family is required to provide 10 hours of time to help put on the auction. We literally could not hold the auction without the help that you all provide. And, without the auction, the school’s operating budget would be challenged to support all the specialists who bring such depth to your children’s education.

SO, if you have not signed up yet for your auction job, please log into our volunteer system at www.themadeleine.edu/hours and help fill the volunteer holes. I’ve been told that the auction team is particularly in need of folks to help with procurement (calling business to follow-up on donation requests) and cashiering (processing guests’ purchases the night of the auction). Training will be provided in both areas if you have never done these jobs before.

Called to Protect Volunteer Program

Thanks to all the parents who came for the initial Called to Protect training last Wednesday. There will be another training at The Madeleine on November 8th for new volunteers. The next step is to complete a background check and the new process is supposed to be up and running. Come to the office and talk to Angela to request this background check. And also sign the Standards of Conduct document.

For returning volunteers…..This year’s online video is called “Safe Haven” and it is produced by a new company working with the Archdiocese. Remember….. to keep your volunteer status “active” you must view this video. You can click here for instructions on accessing the video. (New volunteers do not need to do this. Next year a different video will be announced.) A few notes about this year’s procedure.

Finally two reminders for next week:
1. Our first Friendship Family gathering is a picnic on Monday. Each class, except Kindergarten, is asked to bring an item to share with their family and each child brings his/her own sandwich for lunch. Please read further down in Footnotes if you don’t know what item your child is supposed to bring to share.
2. Our annual Blessing of the Animals is on Oct. 4, the feast day of St. Francis at 2:15pm. We need to move the gathering to the covered basketball court because there is a parish blood drive going on at the same time in the parish hall.

I hope you have a great weekend planned. I am off to the vineyard with my family for our first of three harvests. Hope the weather cooperates and the migrating birds haven’t arrived!

                                                       Sincerely,

                                                        Susan

Friendship Family Fall Picnicpicnic

Monday, October 2

On Monday, October 2, the school will be celebrating its annual Friendship Family Fall Picnic. A friendship family is a group of about 14 students with one or two students from each grade. These families stay intact through a student’s years at the Madeleine. Friendship Families gather about once a month for some sort of activity with the purpose of building community across grade levels.

For the fall picnic, each student is to bring in their own sandwich to eat, and his/her grade level item- see the list below. Students will meet their Friendship Family and share lunch and play “get to know you” games during an all school lunch period.

What to bring?

**All students bring their own individual sandwich of choice**

Thank You,
The Friendship Family Committee

Blessing of the Animalspets

Wednesday, October 4 @ 2:15pm

Bring your pet(s) or a picture of your pet(s) for a blessing as part of Madeleine School's celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi!

We will gather on the basketball court at 2:15pm.

To ensure the safety of everyone gathered, as well as the safety of everyone’s pets, dogs need to be on leashes and other pets should be brought using appropriate means (cages, travel carriers etc.). Dogs that do not enjoy the company of other dogs should be left at home.

Parent Education Nightcalendar

Wednesday, October 18 @ 7pm

Speaker: Kevin Ashworth, MA, LPC, co-founder of NW Anxiety Institute

Although anxiety is a normal part of childhood, when it interferes with day-to-day life and impacts the whole family, it is hard for a parent to know what to do. Kevin Ashworth will address the topic of anxiety in children specifically covering the following: school refusal, perfectionism, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety disorders in children. He will also save plenty of time to address your questions. This should prove to be an informative and educational night for our community.

freedressFree Dress Passes

Use 'em or lose 'em

Some families have been asking whether or not students may use free dress passes left over from last school year. The student body overall understands that free dress passes expire at the end of each school year. Believe it or not, some kids save their free dress passes all year and make it through June without ever putting their uniforms on in order to use them up! So, use 'em or lose 'em. Thank you for your understanding and support in this area.

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Mrs. Miller’s sixth grade class brought in 148 lunches this week. Thank you! As the weather becomes colder and wetter, our shelters become much busier and everything helps. Thank you again for your dedication to our outreach program.

Shopping for Halloween? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

amazon

If you’re already looking ahead to Halloween and planning your spooky decorations and costumes, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

We have a few items still available for your purchasing pleasure from our recently completed Madeleine Uncorked wine tasting celebration. Order online at www.themadeleine.edu/uncorked
