September 15, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It was great to see all of you last night at our Back to School Night. I heard from many people that there is such a wonderful spirit of enthusiasm, openness, and expectation for the coming year. The atrium was filled with such happy chatter that I felt bad about asking everyone to sit down so we could begin the evening.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy family and business lives to support your children and their teachers. School events, such as BTS night, serve more than just one purpose. Teachers definitely want to share their goals and objectives for the year, but we also want to build a partnership where home and school work together to nurture the growth of the whole child. That is our mission. That is why we are here—to help students grow spiritually, academically, morally, socially, and physically. Thank you for entrusting your children to The Madeleine School.

New Parent Potluck

We have another great evening planned for next week, The New Parent Potluck. Beginning a new school year at a new school can be overwhelming….to kids and parents! We want to provide a lovely relaxed evening meal for those new parents so they can ask all the questions that they think everyone else knows. Parents who participated in the Bridge Program are also invited. The Parents Club will provide the main dish and beverages. New parents are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. The event begins at 6:00pm in the Parish Hall. Hope to see you there.

Called to Protect

A few people asked me to clarify the Archdiocesan Called to Protect program that I touched on at Back to School Night. In an effort to prevent instances of child abuse, the Archdiocese of Portland has instituted this program in all parishes. The key points are that if you wish to volunteer in any program that involves children, you must submit a Volunteer Background Check (valid for 3 years), attend a Called to Protect training session, and then read and sign off on an online Standards of Conduct policy statement or sign a hard copy of the same document, which is available in the office.

You only need to attend the Called to Protect training once and background checks need to be renewed every three years. Beginning the second year of volunteering, you must view an online video to keep your status active. This year's video is called Safe Haven, which will be available at the end of the month.

For those who have never attended the Called to Protect training, the first one will be September 27th at 7:00pm in the parish atrium. We will have another training later in the year—date has not been set. You may attend a training at another Archdiocesan location (the trainings are all the same) -- just be sure that you sign in at the door and that the parish hosting the training gives you an attendance certificate. You must bring it to the school office so that I can record it in our database. You can click here to find the list of upcoming trainings.

For those who have previously completed the training, you just need to view the online video mentioned above. Directions for logging on to view the video will be sent out via Footnotes and email when it is active.

Hope you have a great weekend.

                                                       Sincerely,

                                                        Susan

If you were unable to make it to Back to School Night, here's all you need to do to receive text alerts from the school for weather issues and closures:

Auction Funds Strike Again

At the 2015 Madeleine School auction, paddles were raised high for funds for the Mad Science + Arts Wing. Donors were so generous that the technology portion of that year's paddle raise continues to give year after year.

Pictured above and below are 7th graders engineering, coding, and racing LEGO cars built with WeDo 2.0, which are kits bought with funds from the 2015 auction.

safety

Parking Lot Safety

We have two parking lots on campus. The north lot is next to the Field of Dreams/Garden Fever, and the south lot is in front of the school. The south lot is for drive through drop off and pick up of children. The north lot is to be used for parking when parents are walking their children into school.

The flow of traffic for drop off/pick up is interrupted when parents park in the south lot and try to back out to leave. Not so bad at this time of the year, but when it starts raining and everyone is dropping off their child, the backup of cars on 24th can be a big problem. So please use the north lot when you are walking your child into the building.

St. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Welcome Back! At The Madeleine, “We build community based on love, understanding, and respect for the dignity of all people as modeled by Jesus Christ.” Mrs Hanselman’s 8th Grade class clearly demonstrated this by providing 214 lunches to Portland's hungry this week. Thank you Class of 2018!

This year we will continue our school-wide service project with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and HOMEpdx, which work to feed the homeless in downtown Portland.

A few tips for the lunches you make:

amazon

If you’re already looking ahead to Halloween and planning your spooky decorations and costumes, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

Informal wine & cheese get-together for those curious about the Catholic faith

Our community is warm and welcoming. We have a wonderful team of folks who assist in the exploration of the Catholic Faith. The initial stage is a period of inquiry—a time of investigation with no expectations, to discover if one wants to proceed on the journey to full membership in the Catholic Church.

In the spirit of our mission, you are personally invited to come and share wine and cheese with us at an informational meet & greet gathering, Wednesday, September 20, 6:30 pm, Fireside Room of the parish center. No expectations, no obligations. We hope to see you there.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

We have a few items still available for your purchasing pleasure from our recently completed Madeleine Uncorked wine tasting celebration. Order online at www.themadeleine.edu/uncorked

  • Winemaker Salon: Wine Tasting with the Winemaker— Founded in 2009 by husband and wife team of Chris Pittenger and Sarah (daughter of parishioners Larry & Betsy Mason), Gros Ventre is a small, family-owned winery operating out of the Sierra Foothills. Winemaker Salon is the perfect evening for people who love wine. The winemakers from Gros Ventre Cellars will share stories behind each bottle along with perfectly paired bites. $75 per person, Friday, October 27
