constructionPlayground and Bathroom Projects start Next Week!

Summer at The Madeleine traditionally means big projects, and this summer is no different. Sandwiched in between the traditional summer cleaning and all the events we have going on throughout the campus, we will have two, significant, long-awaited projects taking place.

School Playground

School Bathrooms

And on top of these large projects, there are numerous smaller ones as well. As you can tell, it’s going to be a busy summer for our Business Manager, James Wurzer. If you have questions on any of these projects, feel free to send him an email at jwurzer@themadeleine.edu.

A Note from Ms. Andersoncomputer

To all the Madeleine students and families,

It has been a privilege to work these past 3 wonderful years here as the Media Specialist at the Madeleine- it truly has been the best 3 years of my teaching career. As a teacher and as a Mom, I am so proud to have been a part of this community that has such a wonderful reputation because of all of you!

Some of you may have heard me over the years, telling parents or students that certain grades are my “favorite class” but, just to let you all in on a secret before I go, I tell every class they are my favorite because they really are! I love you guys and hope to see you around the neighborhood, at Church and someday soon, at Central Catholic High School.

Have a great summer,
Ms. Anderson

St. Stephens Lunches: What a Year!

The final numbers have been tallied, and we have had a remarkably awesome year. Considering we had three snow storms, an ice storm and many odd snow days to make up, we actually brought in 150 more lunches than last year. Mrs. Meyer’s 3rd Grade finished the school year strong by making 200 lunches Tuesday!  Bringing our final 2016-17 total to…..

SSL

Thank You! Week after week your collective support, generosity and dedication to feed the hungry had a tremendous impact on our community. St. Stephen’s distributed the lunches to downtown shelters for women and children and to many grassroots community organizations, such as, HOMEpdx and The Underground. Congratulations on a job well done and for making a difference one lunch at a time! ~ Tiffany and Reid Cooper

Editor's Note: Many thanks to Tiffany and Reid Cooper for counting and transporting the record-breaking number of lunches this year! Our community could not have asked for better representatives.

Madeleine's Got Talent!

Huge shout out to all the talented performers in this year's wildly impressive Madeleine Talent Show. Not only are you a bunch of great kids ... you are so brave to get up in front of the school body to share with us all your amazing skills.

Of course, thanks to our MCs and to the audience for the rocking applause and enthusiasm.

We should all take a moment to personally thank Susan Samuelson and Molly Briscoe. These Moms knew the importance of keeping alive the tradition of this special showcase of students' talents and they transformed the Parish Hall into our very own center stage. Not only was it a fun way to wrap up the school year, it will remain a moment in the spotlight for our performers.

The significance this type of an event has on someone considering taking up an instrument, or perhaps someone who feels shy or nervous about being up in front of people, can be life changing. Performers, you might not realize it, but you very well might be just the inspiration one of your classmates needed.

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

water 1st logoWATER 1st YOUTH BOARDS

Do you know a student who might be interested in joining the PORTLAND Water1st High School Board or Middle School Board?

We are looking for young people who are interested in being youth advocates for Water1st—those who want to share their energy, talents, and networks to end the walk for water. We will provide youth with the support and resources they need to take action as the next generation of global citizens.

If this sounds like someone you know, encourage them to apply to our High School Board or Middle School Board today!

Water1st youth board members will meet quarterly (generally Sunday's for 1.5 hours starting in October) to engage in activities that 1) educate students on the impact and challenges of the global water crisis, 2) empower students to make a difference through advocacy and training, 3) support a new network of friendships based on a common interest.

For a glimpse into the impact of last year’s youth as well as detailed program information, explore here.

Applications available on our website August 15 and due September 11.
Question, need more information? Contact us via email or give us a call at 206-297-3024.

Parents Interested in becoming Catholic?

Are you feeling that tug of the Holy Spirit inviting you to explore the Catholic Church?  You are invited to make a no obligation inquiry. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults begins September 24.  We will meet on Sundays from 9:00 to 9:50am. The first 8 weeks are a time of inquiry with no commitment or obligation. Please take this suggestion to prayer.

Adult Catholic but not yet Confirmed?

Adult preparation for Confirmation will begin after the First of the year.  However, for those who desire a more comprehensive overview of Catholicism, you are welcomed to join the RCIA instructional sessions earlier beginning September 24—it’s an option.

Do you have a Confirmation-age (9th/10th Grade) daughter or son?

Save the date! Confirmation begins September 24. Pre-register during the summer. Confirmation sessions will meet on Sundays after the 10am Mass (and include lunch). There will be a meeting option at Central Catholic High on late start mornings.

First Communion 2018

Instructional sessions for First Reconciliation & First Eucharist begin Sept 17, 2017.  Pre-register over summer to be kept in the informational loop!  Otherwise watch the bulletin for updates. We have a new model for this year.  Although the instruction will largely remain the same, the bulk of the children’s instructions will take place during Mass when they are dismissed along with Children’s Liturgy of the Word.

Shopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

amazon

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and movies/books/games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

summerSummer Camps

At this time of year, we receive tons of listings for various summer programs and camps. In an effort to let you know about all of these great opportunities and still keep Footnotes to a reasonable length, the camps will now be listed only by name.

To get the complete details about each camp, simply click here!
