September 8, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The beginning of the school year is always so exciting. I hope your children are entertaining you with stories of their days here at The Madeleine. Lots of attention to routines, rules, and procedures usually make the year go smoothly. My granddaughter, Ceci, began third grade this week, and it has been delightful listening to her explain why they have to walk in the hallway, take turns, be polite, etc. It is good to see this through the eyes of a child.

I am sure your eyes couldn’t miss the new playground surface and our new bathrooms/spas(?). Aren’t they beautiful?! A big thank you to James Wurzer, our business manager, who among all his other responsibilities, brought both projects to fruition. We also owe a big thank you to Terry Silva, our maintenance man, who worked so hard to get the school in tiptop shape for opening day. It is amazing how many things need to be fixed over the summer. I really think our campus is one of the loveliest in Portland. We are truly blessed to worship, work, learn, and play in such a beautiful environment.

I have many items to update, remind, or inform you of so here we go…..

Parking

We have two parking lots on campus. I call them the north lot (next to the Field of Dreams/Garden Fever) and the south lot (in front of the school). The south lot is supposed to be for drop off and pick up of children. The north lot is to be used for parking when parents are walking their children into school. The flow of traffic for drop off/pick up is interrupted when parents park in the south lot and try to back out to leave. Not so bad at this time of the year, but when it starts raining and everyone is dropping off their child, the backup of cars on 24th can be a big problem. So please use the north lot when you are walking your child into the building.

Volunteering

The Archdiocese of Portland has developed a program that is designed to safeguard our students and raise awareness of child abuse. If you are new to the school and wish to volunteer, you must do three things the first year:

After the initial year, you must view an online video each year to keep your volunteer status active. The video changes each year, and we will distribute information on how to access this year’s video at Back to School Night.

Speaking of Back to School Night…

Be sure to mark your calendar for Back To School Night on Thursday, September 14. This is an evening to meet your child’s teacher and hear about highlights and activities for the coming year. We are changing up the schedule a bit this year. There will be a “wine and cheese social” from 6:15 until 7:00 in the Parish Hall. During these 45 minutes you can meet new parents, catch up with old friends, ask about parish classes, sign up for activities, and get information on volunteer opportunities, especially our fabulous auction, themed Havana Nights. We will start the meeting promptly at 7:00, so come early to socialize with our wonderful community. See you at 6:15 in the Parish Hall. Adults only, please.

Don’t forget that the Parish Picnic/Catechetical Sunday/Ministry Fair are all happening this Sunday at and after the 10:00 am Mass. Details of all these happenings are in today's Footnotes.

Well, I think that is enough for one week. We are off and running for 2017-2018!

                                           Sincerely,

                                             Susan

Parish Picnic & Ministry Fair on Sunday

Sunday after 10:00 Mass

Families are back from their busy summers, kids are in school, parish events get back into full swing...and our Parish Picnic and Ministry Fair kicks it all off. It has been one of the biggest events each year, and we look forward to another great one this year.

Join us for Mass at 10:00 am, then a wonderful picnic on the parish grounds

After Mass, come on out to the parish grounds where we’ll have food, beverages and fellowship. Hamburgers and hot dogs, grilled to perfection by the Knights of Columbus, will be on the menu.

While you’re enjoying, peruse the Ministry Fair and find a ministry to join or support.

Please join us. Bring your family and friends and celebrate together! Please bring a dessert to share.

Catechetical Sunday this weekend as well

catecheticalThis weekend is Catechetical Sunday, the day we honor our parish school faculty and all ministers who serve the Christian community as catechists at The Madeleine. So please join us at 10:00 am Sunday for this special Mass.

This year's theme is “Living as Missionary Disciples.” Those whom the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

St. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Our amazing final tally for last year was 8,060 lunches made and delivered to St. Stephen's for distribution to those in need downtown. Can we beat this total this year?

What is the St. Stephen's Lunch Program?

Throughout the year we ask all students to participate in our school-wide service project, which provides lunches to Portland's homeless. One class each week is designated to bring in bagged lunches, which we then deliver to a local parish.

Our commitment to the hungry will begin Tuesday, September 12th with the 8th graders bringing in lunches, which will be taken to St. Stephen’s. We suggest that each child brings in at least six lunches, but any help is appreciated. Please include a sandwich and some snacks. Our contributions are distributed to multiple locations around downtown where people gather seeking a nutricious meal.

What should I include in the lunches we make?

Please no condiments on sandwiches. Why no condiments? St. Stephen's volunteers specifically made this request because eggs are on the “Big 8” of food allergens. Many lunches in the past were not being accepted because of mayonnaise on the bread. Madeleine School has purchased boxes of individual packets of both mayonnaise and mustard to hand out separately. If you have extra individual packets of either mustard or mayonnaise at home that you would like to donate please do. Just place in a separate plastic bag and we will deliver it with the lunches. Thanks!

Here are a few tips for the lunches you make:
