January 26, 2018

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had a great, rousing meeting last Tuesday night with the third grade parents. The purpose was to ask this class to select/volunteer/coerce some brave parents into the role of Auction Chair for the 2018 Auction, as well as identify sub-chairs for various committees. Talk about organization and communication! This group was ready to surface leaders and so the rest of the meeting was spent on discussing themes, sub-chair roles, and listening to ideas. I am so happy to introduce next year’s Auction team. (Drum roll, please!) Thank you to Heather Matteri, Mary Remuzzi, Susan Samuelson, and Jen Tadjedin. Please give them all your support as we move forward.

Re-registration Form & Fees Due February 1

Mrs. Rosebrook is receiving the re-registration forms and thanks everyone for returning them in a timely manner. The deadline for the book fee is next week on February 1.

Catholic Schools Week

Sunday begins Catholic Schools Week, and there is a schedule of activities in today’s Footnotes. I hope that everyone can join us at the 10:00 am Sunday Mass to begin the celebration of Catholic education. Students are asked to wear their uniform to Mass and gather in the back of church. We will process in by class and then students will sit with their families for the rest of Mass. We will also have many children in the choir and members of the Student Government who will be thanking our parishioners for their continuing support of our school. Hope to see all of our students on Sunday.

Tuesday is also a big day next week.

                                                               Sincerely,

                                                                Susan

Catholic Schools Week

January 28 - February 2

Madeleine is joining Catholic Schools all over the nation in celebration with the theme Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. There are many fun activities going on all week long. From special lunches to a Friendship Family activity to a Pennies for the Poor competition to a Geography Bee, there's a little something for everyone to enjoy!

Sunday: Parish Appreciation Day

Catholic Schools Week will kick-off with a procession of students in uniform behind their class banners at the beginning of the 10am Mass. A Student Government representative will also be speaking at all Masses. In addition, a special student choir will join the adult singers. Our students will be handing out class-made prayer cards and a special treat at the 10am Mass.

Monday - LEARN: Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day

We are honoring our faculty and staff both at Monday morning assembly and with a special luncheon. We are ending the day with a Geography Bee.

Tuesday - SERVE: Faith Appreciation Day

The whole school is participating in our weekly St. Stephen's Lunch collection. We are asking everyone to add a little something extra to the bag: a note, a sweet treat, special drawing on the bag. We are celebrating Mass with Archbishop Sample at 9am. All are welcome to join us!

Wednesday - LEAD: Parent Appreciation Day

Coffee and donuts in the Main Hallway, plus a token of appreciation from students to their parents. And take the night off overseeing homework because...NO HOMEWORK!

Thursday - SUCCEED: Student Appreciation Dayballoons

Free dress, a treat, and an afternoon of fun with our Friendship Families. And, don't forget to take the night off from cooking by heading over to Fire + Stone for dinner to support the 8th grade fundraiser!

Friday: No School

Teacher In-Service Day

All Week: Pennies for the Poor

Look for the jugs in the main hallway during Catholic Schools week. All money raised by the classes will go to the Church of St. Andre Bessette. Have fun!

penniesSave Your Coins for Pennies for the Poor

Begins Monday

Student Government is hosting our annual Pennies for the Poor campaign during Catholic Schools Week. Once again the money we raise will benefit St. Andre Bessette, formerly known as the Downtown Chapel. St. Andre Bessette has an outreach program that provides food and support for the marginalized in our community.

The fundraiser is during Catholic Schools Week, which begins on Monday, January 29, and wraps up on Thursday, February 1. During those days, students can bring in money to fill up their class’ jugs. Pennies and dollars are worth positive points and all silver coins are worth negative points. Whichever class has the most points in the end wins!

lunchesSt. Stephen's Lunch Program

Making a difference, one lunch at a time!

Well, the first graders hit a milestone this week by going over the 300 mark! 304 lunches to be exact. First graders, you all did a tremendous job! Thank you for taking the time and really making an impact for folks who are in need. We received cheers from the folks at St. Stephens when they saw how full our car was.

All School Participation This Coming Tuesday (1/30)!

ALL HANDS ON DECK this coming up week to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. While Kindergarten is the lead class, we are also asking all classes to participate. If you have a little bit of extra time, please decorate your bags or write a note. If everyone brings in 5 lunches, we could bring in our biggest numbers yet. We can do this!

archdpdxArchbishop Sample Encourages Support During Catholic Schools Week and Beyond

Sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association, Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States.

Archbishop Sample recently stated that one of his top priorities is to "position our schools so there isn't a single Catholic family in the Archdiocese of Portland that would not send their children to a Catholic school because they can't afford it."

He recently dedicated an entire episode of his radio program, The Voice of the Shepard, to talk about his love and support of Catholic education. The program can be downloaded from the Mater Dei Radio website at www.materdeiradio.com.

safetyThe Importance of Turn Signals

We recently heard from a bike commuter who rides past our school every morning and has been cut off by people making sudden turns into our parking lots without signaling.

Not only are turn signals important for bike commuters, but also for our students and parents who are walking from the parking lot to the school.

Please help keep everyone safe by using your turn signals when turning into parking lots!

rememberIn-Parish Tuition Reminder

Dear Parents,
If you are receiving In-Parish Tuition, don't forget that you agreed to serve in a Parish Ministry as part of your Parish Affiliation Commitment. Good news! There are a couple ways coming up to help fulfill this commitment:

We need a wide range of help at these events, including food prep, kitchen help, serving, busing and clean-up.

These events are in addition to our Wine Tasting, Parish Picnic and Madeleine Marketplace events which have already passed for this year.

Have you fulfilled your commitment? If yes, thank you! If not, please contact Janeen Reilly in the parish office, at 503-281-5777 or jreilly@themadeleine.edu to say you can help at one of these events. Both are in need of volunteers and Janeen would really appreciate your help.

Thank you, Father Mike and Susan Steele

starsYDP is Hiring

Our before and after school program, better known as YDP, is needing some additional help. In order to be in compliance with our licensing agency, we must have a certain number of adults on duty to meet the student/teacher ratios. This year we are serving many children, especially in the afternoon, and we need to hire some additional personnel. We have placed a few ads, but no luck in recruiting appropriate hires.

"Word of mouth” advertising is the best, so we need some help in getting the word out. The Madeleine kids are great to work with, the pay is competitive, and the schedule follows the school calendar. So this means there are long Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks. So if you know of someone who would like to work a few hours a day, a few days a week, please, please, please ask him/her to give me a call. Think high-schoolers over 18, part-time college students, nannies, retirees who want to get out of the house for a few hours. Perhaps this job is of interest to you? No stress, just lots of fun.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
