A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Another busy week has come to an end. On Thursday, we welcomed our new students who will be joining us next year. The majority of them were for our Kindergarten class, and it was so lovely to see them greeted by our current Kinders. They were so proud to show their guests around the Kindergarten classroom and explain what to expect next year.

Many thanks to Cathy Bargovan and Kristen LaBarca for providing hospitality to our visitors and to Deborah Naugler and Susan Samuelson for talking to the new parents about Parents Club and the Auction. The days are speeding by, and our new students will be here before we know it…… but there is still so much to do!

End-of-Year Reminders

One of my least favorite things to do is nag people (though my children/husband may disagree), but I will be sending out many emails next week to remind parents about turning in tuition contracts, parish affiliation forms, all the paperwork in the “summer packet,” and bills for volunteer hours and scrip. I know life is busy, but there are only three weeks of school left.

The other reason for some degree of urgency is that we must be out of the school building on June 17th. The crews that will be installing our new fire suppression system and renovating the upstairs gym bathrooms are beginning work on Monday, June 18th. Due to the asbestos abatement that will take place before any construction, we must be out of the office and classrooms until ??????? There are some tasks that Angela and I can do from home, but for the most part we have to plan on finishing by mid June. So please take pity on us and get to the task of turning your paperwork in ASAP.

With gratitude,

Susan

church Why Does This Campaign Deserve Your Support?

Look around. The buildings you see all around you were built by past generations of visionary parishioners, parents and volunteers. They were “paying it forward” in:

Now it’s our turn. The Madeleine Old Church Capital Campaign is vitally important to everyone who has a past, present or future at The Madeleine.
Yes, one objective of the campaign is to restore and preserve this historic structure for future generations. But there are immediate, significant benefits to everyone who learns, serves, prays, teaches or works here. This project will:

Good news! thermometer

In the past week, donors to The Madeleine Old Church Project Capital Campaign have pushed the campaign total to within 88% of our first milestone: meeting parishioner Howard Hedinger’s million-dollar challenge.

Gifts and pledges have surpassed $1.75 million dollars toward the $2 million needed to earn the $1 million challenge gift. We are truly grateful for the 175 Madeleine families and friends who have supported the campaign to date. Special thanks also go to the 75 dedicated campaign leaders who are volunteering their time to reach out to school and parish families.

So, what can you do to help meet the challenge?

  1. Turn in your completed pledge card. All gifts, no matter their size, will count toward the challenge.
  2. No pledge card or campaign letter in hand?

Accept the phone call from the campaign volunteer who is trying to deliver your pledge card. Or contact Campaign Manager John Dillin at (503) 799-5796 or the parish office, and we will get one to you.

Visit the campaign website at www.oldchurchproject.com for more project details and the variety of ways to make a tax-deductible pledge or gift.

bookfairBook Fair Results

Spring Book Fair was a huge success thanks to all who came to support! Throughout the week, we sold over $4,800 worth of books from Scholastic. Over 50% of the money raised from sales is used to purchase new books for both the library and the kids' individual classrooms.

In addition, the $2 Free Dress Day brought in $350! This money was used to purchase books for The Children’s Book Bank, a local charity that gives books to children who wouldn’t otherwise have access to books at home.

Thanks again to the volunteers who helped make the Book Fair a great success. We couldn’t do it without you.

bbVisual and Performing Arts Shine at The Madeleine

Thanks to the hard work of Kelley Groves and Cary Pederson, our students have had an amazing year of experiences with both the visual and performing arts.

Last week's art show and performances of Beauty & the Beast were both huge successes thanks to all the parents, grandparents, friends, Madeleine students, volunteers -- and especially Ms. Groves and Mr. Pederson! We can't wait to see what they come up with for next year.

The 2018 Madeleine Art Show

What a fun and busy time of year it is, and it was fantastic to see the 2018 Madeleine Art Show come together with everyone’s beautiful and creative artwork.

CONGRATULATIONS to Madeleine students for your creativity and dedication in Art class this year. And a big THANK YOU to our wonderful group of Art Show volunteers who helped with all aspects of the show...mounting art, taping, gluing, hanging up, taking down, space planning and moving furniture.

Everything looked so beautiful and it was really a joy to see the art displayed together and feel the excitement in the air. Madeleine has a talented group of artists!

Your student’s art portfolio will be coming home soon with projects from the year.

Thank you again!
Mrs. Groves

Help Welcome New Families

to The Madeleine School

The Bridge Program creates a welcoming community by connecting new families with current families at the school. The goal of the program is to be a resource for new families and to help them navigate their first year at the Madeleine so they don’t feel left out, lost or overwhelmed.

Each volunteer is expected to check in with their Bridge family at least once over the summer, during the first week of school, and during the first trimester. In addition, there are three opportunities during the school year to get volunteer hours:

If you are interested in being a “bridge” for a new family, please contact Julie Baldwin at Julie.JulieBaldwin@gmail.com.

bottlesBottleDrop @ The Madeleine Continues

New bags available in the Scrip Office

We have a fresh supply of blue BottleDrop bags available in the Scrip Office. Be sure to stop by and pick one up before the end of the school year. All proceeds from this point forward will benefit next year's 8th grade by providing funds for their end-of-year trip. Participating is super easy! Click here to learn how.

amazonShopping for Summer? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!

If you’re planning to shop for vacation supplies and books and games to keep the kids busy, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.

The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

safetyTraffic Safety at Parking Lot Entrances

Please be careful!

We received an angry letter from a bicycle commuter calling us to task for “extremely unsafe and careless driving habits” around our parking lot entrances.

Please ask yourself if you’re being careful when when you drop off or pick up your children. We need to be good neighbors, and driving safely is a big part of that. We realize that our parking entrances pose a unique driving situation, but please slow downlook for bicyclists and pedestrians, and use your signals.

Jazz Sensation Grace Kelly to Hold Masterclass at The Madeleine!

Friday, June 1, 2:00 in the church • Class is full, but all are welcome to watch

Bravo! Northwest Concerts is sponsoring jazz sensation Grace Kelly to lead a Music Masterclass for selected 5th – 8th grade students on Friday, June 1, 2:00-3:00 pm in The Madeleine Church. While the class is only for students who have previously signed up, all are invited to attend and watch.

Grace is a 25-year-old jazz singer and saxophonist from New York City. She wrote her first song at 7 years old, recorded her first CD at 12, orchestrated and performed an original composition with the Boston Pops Orchestra at 14, and performed at President Obama’s Inauguration at 16. Grace has performed over 800 concerts in over 30 countries with everyone from Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, to Tina Fey, Martin Short and Gloria Estefan, and has been a regular on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s band.

Fourteen singers and instrumentalists from The Madeleine School have been selected to work with Grace on how to play and sing jazz music. The students are rehearsing with Music Director Maria Manzo and Michael Kissinger to perfect their renditions of “This Little Light of Mine” and “Amazing Grace." They are: Maddy N., Zehren B., Eloise M., Ava K., Gabriella W., Mallory R., Celine G., Amelie H., Caitlin S., and Gus K. They will be accompanied by Parker L. on piano, Joe M. and A.J.W. on drums and auxiliary percussion, and Zoe A. on clarinet.

This Masterclass is part of the Music Education initiative of the Bravo! Northwest Concert Series. Congratulations to our young jazz musicians!

Douglas Webster has appeared on Broadway, National tour and Regional theatre in the lead role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. Mr. Webster is also the foremost leading authority on Leonard Bernstein’s Mass, having starred as the Celebrant in over twenty productions, including those at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and for Saint Pope John Paul at The Vatican. Closer to home, you may have heard Douglas Webster at The Madeleine.
