A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Well, after 1.5 years of preparation, the official Accreditation Visit is almost here. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week, the 6 member team will be observing, questioning, examining, scrutinizing, witnessing, and, hopefully, affirming our school community. The staff has done an outstanding job of getting ready. We wrote a 63 page Self Study document guided by the Western Catholic Education Association protocol. We gathered evidence to support our statements in the manuscript. We were asked to analyze our program to determine the achievements and goals, and then to formulate an action plan to see what we want to accomplish in the next six years. To say this process was challenging is an understatement, but since the finish line is in sight, we all agree it has been a worthwhile endeavor.
Thank you to all the parents who agreed to come to the Tuesday night parent meeting. I know the team will be impressed with the level of involvement and commitment that defines the Madeleine parent community. Please come to the parish hall at 6:30. The meeting should be about an hour in length.
There is an 11:30 dismissal on Thursday. The visiting team will then meet with the faculty and any interested community members to share their findings. If you are not headed out for a three ½ day weekend, please join us to hear the final report.
Sincerely,
Susan

Parent Education Night
Wednesday, October 18 @ 7pm
Speaker: Kevin Ashworth, MA, LPC, co-founder of NW Anxiety Institute
Although anxiety is a normal part of childhood, when it interferes with day-to-day life and impacts the whole family, it is hard for a parent to know what to do. Kevin Ashworth will address the topic of anxiety in children specifically covering the following: school refusal, perfectionism, separation anxiety and generalized anxiety disorders in children. He will also save plenty of time to address your questions. This should prove to be an informative and educational night for our community.
2, 1, K Adventures in Learning Day
On Thursday, the Primary classes met for a "2, 1, K Adventures in Learning Day." Our focus was the Feast of the Guardian Angel. We sang a song with hand motions, prayed, and made special angels to watch over our school and Parish!
2, 1, K Adventures in Learning Days are special activities held a few times each year when the three grades come together to learn and explore the world.
St. Stephen's Lunch Program
Making a difference, one lunch at a time!
Well, the fifth graders were SUPER STARS this week and brought in 226 lunches! Your class was the first to break the 200 mark for the 2017-18 school year. Congratulations Fifth Grade! Along with the lunches our car was filled with boxes of oranges, apples, drinks and snacks that were left over from our Friendship Family lunch on Monday. Thank you Madeleine for your generosity! Our friends at St. Stephens were so delighted and grateful.
A few tips for the lunches you make:
- Simple sandwiches with plain bread, meat and cheese. PB&J is also okay.
- No mustard or mayo!
- Lunches should also include chips and a cookie or piece of fruit.
- There is no limit to the number of lunches you may bring in.
St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day Commenmoration
On the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the kindergartners made beautiful birds to adorn the statue of St. Francis. We read the story of St. Francis and the Wolf. The children also had a prayer service in the courtyard to commemorate St. Francis.
Blessing of the Animals
Pets were in abundance!

Shopping for Halloween? Your Amazon Purchases Can Benefit The Madeleine!
If you’re already looking ahead to Halloween and planning your spooky decorations and costumes, remember to use the Madeleine Parents Club Amazon link. This program donates a portion of everything you spend on Amazon to The Madeleine – and it won't cost you a single cent more! You can click this link to get shopping immediately, or you can read more about this “free fundraiser” here.
The more you shop on Amazon using www.themadeleine.edu/amazon, the more money the school makes. The prices and shopping experience are exactly the same as the “normal” Amazon, but using that link earns the school a minimum of 4% commission. It’s one of the easiest fundraisers you’ll ever find!

The Madeleine is hosting its annual Madeleine Marketplace Bazaar on Thursday, December 7. We are reaching out to potential vendors with an invitation to operate a booth to sell your items.
The one day bazaar, held in Parish Hall, opens at 2pm and closes at 8pm. The parish is made up of 800 families. Many, if not most, attend the annual Christmas tree lighting, which happens during the evening. Vendors may begin setting up at 1 pm, but no sooner. Tables will be assigned. Eight foot long tables and 60 inch round tables are available, as is electricity. Please bring your own table cloths and lights, if you like.
The one and only fee to participate is $60.00. You act as your own bank and take payment at your own risk. Wi-Fi is available. Food and drink will be available for purchase as well as kids movies, crafts, caroling and pictures with Santa.
If you are interested in participating as a vendor and agree with the above terms, please make your check payable to “The Madeleine” for $60.00. On the memo line, please indicate the size table you would like (rectangular or round) and if you need electricity. Please mail your check to the event organizer, Susie Andersen, at 3401 NE Couch Street, Portland, OR 97232.
If you have concerns or questions please contact the parish office at 503-281-5777.

The Madeleine Old Church Project
planning survey kicks off
A note from Father Mike • We need to hear from you!
Beginning Monday, Oct. 9 we will be beginning a comprehensive survey
regarding plans for our proposed Old Church Project. Before making any
final decisions regarding these plans, we need to hear from you.
I’m asking you to share your thoughts regarding our needs and the possibility
of conducting a major fundraising effort. More information should be arriving
in your mailbox this week.
Your feedback will enable us to determine support for the project. If we,
as a faith community, choose to move forward, the planning study will also
help us identify prospective campaign leaders and volunteers and to establish
a realistic campaign goal.
The Steier Group, our development firm, will compile this information and
present it to leadership in early November.
I believe that this process is extremely important, and encourage every
Madeleine family to participate. Your input is valuable as we take our
first steps toward restoring our Old Church, and helping to grow the mission
and ministries of The Madeleine.
—Gratefully, Fr. Mike Biewend
Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!
We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.
Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)
Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.
We have a few items still available for your purchasing pleasure from our recently completed Madeleine Uncorked wine tasting celebration. Order online at www.themadeleine.edu/uncorked
- Luxury Suite: Blazers vs. Magic—Here’s your chance to see the Blazers from the beautiful Pacific Office Automation luxury suite in the Moda Center. Blazers vs. Magic. Ticket includes game admission and seating, and light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages in the luxury suite. $75 per person, November 15, 7:00 pm
