A Note from Susan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Following is today's reading from The Madeleine Book of Lenten Reflections, as shared by Fr. Jack Mosbrucker.
The Temptation to be Afraid
"Fear not" is a phrase Jesus repeated often in the Gospel. In one instance, Jesus and the disciples were on the lake when a storm arose. The disciples were so frightened that they woke Jesus, who stilled the storm and asked, "Why are you afraid?"
That question demands an answer because fear can paralyze us, cause us to run away or withdraw into ourselves rather than building a relationship with God. Unfortunately, this can happen when we perceive Him as harsh or judgemental.
"Why were you afraid?" We must answer that question for ourselves, but Jesus gives us the antidote to fear by quelling the storm. Implied is the message: "Don't you know that I will save you?"

Madeleine Safety & Security Committee Seeks New Members
Are you interested in safety and security issues at The Madeleine? Then, we need you! Volunteers are needed to serve on this important committee, which meets one evening of each month. The Madeleine Safety & Security Committee has multiple positions (3-year terms) available.
Over the past year the committee has completed work on several projects to help protect parishioners and students in the event of a natural disaster, including the purchase of a secure storage building for earthquake preparedness supplies, the installation of earthquake shut-off valves on gas meters, and the completion of a seismic assessment of the school, church and parish buildings. However, more remains to be done to assure the safety and security of children and adults, both at school and in church, from natural and human disasters.
If you are interested in serving on the Madeleine Safety & Security Committee, please contact the Chair, Marc Gonzales, at gonzalesmarc5@gmail.com or 503-519-8697 with any questions.

Your Donations are Giving Hope to the Students at Hogar Colegio La Milagrosa in Puerto Rico
At the 2017 Auction, our generous auction guests raised over $35,000 during a second paddle raise in response to the urgent needs of a Catholic School in Arecibo, Puerto Rico that had been devastated by the hurricanes last fall. The school, Hogar Colegio La Milagrosa, is a rural Catholic school located about one hour outside of the capital city of San Juan. It was founded in 1926 and currently educates boys and girls ages 4–17 and also serves as an orphanage for 14 girls. Not only did the hurricanes destroy a great portion of the roof, creating devastation throughout the school, but they also damaged the chapel, furniture, electronics, clothes and books. In addition, it made the orphanage uninhabitable.
In January, Dunetchka Otero-Serrano, a parent of two girls at The Madeleine and a native of Puerto Rico, was able to visit the school and witness the damage firsthand.
Don't Forget Your Lenten Rice Bowl
During Lent, join our faith community by participating in Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl. Rice Bowl is a faith-in-action program encouraging encounters with our global neighbors through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Please consider preparing simple, meatless meals on the Fridays of Lent, and place the representative savings in the Rice Bowl. We will collect your Rice Bowls at the end of Lent. For suggested activities designed to help families grow in faith this Lenten season, see crsricebowl.org/families.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!
We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.
Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)
Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.
Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
