December 1, 2017

A Note from Susan

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In case you are wondering why we had an 11:30 dismissal today….It is the end of the first trimester of school. Teachers will be working on report cards, which will be distributed next Friday. It is hard to believe that one third of the school year is over.

I need to remind all parents about the protocol of what to do if your child is going to be absent. Your child’s safety is an absolute priority for us, and Mrs. Rosebrook keeps close eye on the attendance. Our rule is that within the first 15 minutes of school, we know where everyone is. It was particularly challenging last week, given the number of children on early Thanksgiving vacation, to be making over 30 phone calls to track down missing children. This certainly cannot be done in 15 minutes. So please call or email us if your child is not coming to school.

ALSO, your child may not deliver the message that he/she is not going to be here. I know none of our students would do this but……it has been known to happen that older kids call in sick, after their parents go to work, and enjoy a day off..…think Ferris Bueller’s Day Off! So please let us know ASAP if your child is not going to be here.

Madeleine Marketplace

Next Thursday is our annual Madeleine Marketplace and Christmas Tree Lighting. (Wait, wasn’t Thanksgiving just last week??) Vendors will be set up in the Parish Hall to help you with your Christmas shopping. Dinner will also be available. Tables open at 2:00, so do a little shopping before you pick up your child. I will be there in the official capacity of “cookie judge” and “wine seller.” Hope to see you there.

YDP is Hiring

Our before and after school program, better known as YDP, is needing some additional help. In order to be in compliance with our licensing agency, we must have a certain number of adults on duty to meet the student/teacher ratios. This year we are serving many children, especially in the afternoon, and we need to hire some additional personnel. We have placed a few ads, but no luck in recruiting appropriate hires.

I think “word of mouth” advertising is the best, so I need some help in getting the word out. The Madeleine kids are great to work with, the pay is competitive, and the schedule follows the school calendar. So this means there are long Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks. So if you know of someone who would like to work a few hours a day, a few days a week, please, please, please ask him/her to give me a call. Think high-schoolers over 18, part-time college students, nannies, retirees who want to get out of the house for a few hours. Perhaps this job is of interest to you? No stress, just lots of fun.

Christmas Program

Last reminder…..Please read the information about the upcoming Christmas program in today’s Footnotes. The date is Thursday, December 14th. Students in grades K through 6 will be performing in the Church at 7pm. (The parish bulletin said K-8, but that is incorrect.)

Have a great weekend.

                                                                  Susan

presentThe Present Pass is Coming

December 11

On Monday, December 11th, our friendship families will be gathering for a Christmas celebration. For the activity each student will need to bring a small wrapped gift between $1 and $5 that is age and gender neutral. The eighth graders will read a Christmas book and pick a “password” that is said often in the book. Every time that word is said in the story, students will pass the present they are holding to the person next to them. Whatever present the student is holding when the book is finished is the student’s to open.

Merry Christmas!

On Saturday, November 18, students from schools across Portland gathered at Central Catholic High School to compete in the annual Mathfest. In addition to each participant taking an individual exam known as the "conTEST," two “mathletes” from each school were paired with two students from another school, and put their agile brains to work at a series of group problem-solving events.

Participants from The Madeleine School this year were: 7th graders Charlie B., Quinn B., Trevor Y. and Teddy G.; and 8th graders Ava T., Claire K., Sebastian R. and Ryan H.

The team of Ava and Sebastian, along with two peers from another school, placed first in two team events: Guess My Rule and Locks and Boxes. In the individual 7th grade competition, Teddy placed 2nd and Charlie placed 4th.

Congratulations to all The Madeleine School students who were chosen to participate! Go Madeleine Math!

Calling All Basketball Uniforms & Sweatshirts recycle

Has your child outgrown (or is no longer needing) their basketball uniform or their basketball sweatshirt with their name on it? Please bring these items to the Madeleine Uniform Closet as soon as possible.

Sweatshirts with names on them will be repurposed with new names on them! That's right, a NEW name can be put on those outgrown sweatshirts so they can be passed on to a smaller child.

Let's be models of change and do our part for the planet by reusing and repurposing our old uniforms!

If you would like a repurposed sweatshirt, please contact Deborah Naugler.

Thank you for helping our planet and world.

Audio/Video Ministry needs your help!

We are putting together a team of ministers to assist in running the video screens and sound system during our weekend liturgies. This is a very important ministry, as both sound and screens help to enhance our worship experience.

Both ministries make use of technology, so comfort with an iPad for the sound levels and presentation software on a laptop computer for the video screens are very helpful. (Similar to Powerpoint—you run the presentations that have been built for each Mass, and will not need to edit or create them.)

Interested? Please contact Rich Hammons, rhammons@themadeleine.edu.

Congratulations for making it all the way to the end of Friday Footnotes!
